Jeremiah 5:21–24 — The New International Version (NIV)

21 Hear this, you foolish and senseless people,

who have eyes but do not see,

who have ears but do not hear:

22 Should you not fear me?” declares the Lord.

“Should you not tremble in my presence?

I made the sand a boundary for the sea,

an everlasting barrier it cannot cross.

The waves may roll, but they cannot prevail;

they may roar, but they cannot cross it.

23 But these people have stubborn and rebellious hearts;

they have turned aside and gone away.

24 They do not say to themselves,

‘Let us fear the Lord our God,

who gives autumn and spring rains in season,

who assures us of the regular weeks of harvest.’

Jeremiah 5:21–24 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

21 Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; which have eyes, and see not; which have ears, and hear not: 22 Fear ye not me? saith the Lord: will ye not tremble at my presence, which have placed the sand for the bound of the sea by a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass it: and though the waves thereof toss themselves, yet can they not prevail; though they roar, yet can they not pass over it? 23 But this people hath a revolting and a rebellious heart; they are revolted and gone. 24 Neither say they in their heart, Let us now fear the Lord our God, that giveth rain, both the former and the latter, in his season: he reserveth unto us the appointed weeks of the harvest.

Jeremiah 5:21–24 — New Living Translation (NLT)

21 Listen, you foolish and senseless people,

with eyes that do not see

and ears that do not hear.

22 Have you no respect for me?

Why don’t you tremble in my presence?

I, the Lord, define the ocean’s sandy shoreline

as an everlasting boundary that the waters cannot cross.

The waves may toss and roar,

but they can never pass the boundaries I set.

23 But my people have stubborn and rebellious hearts.

They have turned away and abandoned me.

24 They do not say from the heart,

‘Let us live in awe of the Lord our God,

for he gives us rain each spring and fall,

assuring us of a harvest when the time is right.’

Jeremiah 5:21–24 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

21 ‘Hear this now, O foolish people,

Without understanding,

Who have eyes and see not,

And who have ears and hear not:

22 Do you not fear Me?’ says the Lord.

‘Will you not tremble at My presence,

Who have placed the sand as the bound of the sea,

By a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass beyond it?

And though its waves toss to and fro,

Yet they cannot prevail;

Though they roar, yet they cannot pass over it.

23 But this people has a defiant and rebellious heart;

They have revolted and departed.

24 They do not say in their heart,

“Let us now fear the Lord our God,

Who gives rain, both the former and the latter, in its season.

He reserves for us the appointed weeks of the harvest.”

Jeremiah 5:21–24 — New Century Version (NCV)

21 Hear this message, you foolish people who have no sense.

They have eyes, but they don’t really see.

They have ears, but they don’t really listen.

22 Surely you are afraid of me,” says the Lord.

“You should shake with fear in my presence.

I am the one who made the beaches to be a border for the sea,

a border the water can never go past.

The waves may pound the beach, but they can’t win over it.

They may roar, but they cannot go beyond it.

23 But the people of Judah are stubborn and have turned against me.

They have turned aside and gone away from me.

24 They do not say to themselves,

‘We should fear the Lord our God,

who gives us autumn and spring rains in their seasons,

who makes sure we have the harvest at the right time.’

Jeremiah 5:21–24 — American Standard Version (ASV)

21 Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; that have eyes, and see not; that have ears, and hear not: 22 Fear ye not me? saith Jehovah: will ye not tremble at my presence, who have placed the sand for the bound of the sea, by a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass it? and though the waves thereof toss themselves, yet can they not prevail; though they roar, yet can they not pass over it. 23 But this people hath a revolting and a rebellious heart; they are revolted and gone. 24 Neither say they in their heart, Let us now fear Jehovah our God, that giveth rain, both the former and the latter, in its season; that preserveth unto us the appointed weeks of the harvest.

Jeremiah 5:21–24 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

21 Hear now this, O foolish and heartless people, who have eyes and see not; who have ears, and hear not. 22 Will ye not fear me? saith Jehovah. Will ye not tremble at my presence, who have set the sand a bound for the sea by a perpetual decree, and it shall not pass it? and its waves toss themselves, but they do not prevail; and they roar, yet can they not pass over it? 23 But this people hath a stubborn and a rebellious heart; they have turned aside and are gone. 24 And they say not in their heart, Let us now fear Jehovah our God, that giveth rain, both the early and the latter, in its season; who preserveth unto us the appointed weeks of harvest.

Jeremiah 5:21–24 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

21 Hear this, you stupid and senseless people!

You have eyes, but you cannot see.

You have ears, but you cannot hear.

22 Don’t you fear me?” asks the Lord

“Don’t you tremble in my presence?

I made the sand a boundary for the sea,

a permanent barrier that it cannot cross.

Although the waves toss continuously,

they can’t break through.

Although they roar, they can’t cross it.

23 But these people are stubborn and rebellious.

They have turned aside and wandered away from me.

24 They don’t say to themselves,

‘We should fear the Lord our God.

He sends rain at the right time,

the autumn rain and the spring rain.

He makes sure that we have harvest seasons.’

Jeremiah 5:21–24 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

21 Hear this,

you foolish and senseless people.

They have eyes, but they don’t see.

They have ears, but they don’t hear.

22 Do you not fear Me?

This is the Lord’s declaration.

Do you not tremble before Me,

the One who set the sand as the boundary of the sea,

an enduring barrier that it cannot cross?

The waves surge, but they cannot prevail.

They roar but cannot pass over it.

23 But these people have stubborn and rebellious hearts.

They have turned aside and have gone away.

24 They have not said to themselves,

‘Let’s fear the Lord our God,

who gives the rain, both early and late, in its season,

who guarantees to us the fixed weeks of the harvest.’

Jeremiah 5:21–24 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

21 Hear this, O foolish and senseless people,

who have eyes, but do not see,

who have ears, but do not hear.

22 Do you not fear me? says the Lord;

Do you not tremble before me?

I placed the sand as a boundary for the sea,

a perpetual barrier that it cannot pass;

though the waves toss, they cannot prevail,

though they roar, they cannot pass over it.

23 But this people has a stubborn and rebellious heart;

they have turned aside and gone away.

24 They do not say in their hearts,

“Let us fear the Lord our God,

who gives the rain in its season,

the autumn rain and the spring rain,

and keeps for us

the weeks appointed for the harvest.”

Jeremiah 5:21–24 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

21 ‘Hear this please, O foolish and senseless people,

who have eyes but do not see,

who have ears but do not hear.’

22 Do you not revere me?” declares Yahweh,

“Do you not tremble before me?

For I have placed the sand as a boundary for the sea,

as an everlasting limit, and it cannot pass over it,

and they rise and fall loudly, but they cannot prevail,

and its waves roar, but they cannot pass over it.

23 But for this people is a stubborn and rebellious heart,

they have turned aside and have gone away.

24 And they do not say in their hearts,

‘Let us fear please Yahweh our God,

the one who gives the autumn rain and the spring rain in its season,

the set times of the harvest he keeps for us.’

Jeremiah 5:21–24 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

21 ‘Listen to this, you foolish people,

who do not have any sense.

You have eyes, but you do not see.

You have ears, but you do not hear.

22 Shouldn’t you have respect for me?’ announces the Lord.

‘Shouldn’t you tremble with fear in front of me?

I made the sand to hold the ocean back.

It will do that forever.

The ocean can’t go past it.

The waves might roll, but they can’t sweep over it.

They might roar, but they can’t go across it.

23 But you people have stubborn hearts.

You refuse to obey me.

You have turned away from me.

You have gone down the wrong path.

24 You do not say to yourselves,

“Let us have respect for the Lord our God.

He sends rain in the fall and the spring.

He promises us that the harvest will come

at the same time each year.”

Jeremiah 5:21–24 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

21 Now hear this, O foolish and senseless people,

Who have eyes but do not see;

Who have ears but do not hear.

22 ‘Do you not fear Me?’ declares the Lord.

‘Do you not tremble in My presence?

For I have placed the sand as a boundary for the sea,

An eternal decree, so it cannot cross over it.

Though the waves toss, yet they cannot prevail;

Though they roar, yet they cannot cross over it.

23 ‘But this people has a stubborn and rebellious heart;

They have turned aside and departed.

24 ‘They do not say in their heart,

“Let us now fear the Lord our God,

Who gives rain in its season,

Both the autumn rain and the spring rain,

Who keeps for us

The appointed weeks of the harvest.”
