Judgment on Moab

48 xConcerning Moab.

Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel:

“Woe to yNebo, for it is laid waste!

zKiriathaim is put to shame, it is taken;

the fortress is put to shame aand broken down;

the renown of Moab is no more.

In bHeshbon they planned disaster against her:

‘Come, let us cut her off cfrom being a nation!’

You also, O dMadmen, shall be brought to silence;

the sword shall pursue you.

Jeremiah 48:1–2 — The New International Version (NIV)

Concerning Moab:

This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says:

“Woe to Nebo, for it will be ruined.

Kiriathaim will be disgraced and captured;

the stronghold will be disgraced and shattered.

Moab will be praised no more;

in Heshbon people will plot her downfall:

‘Come, let us put an end to that nation.’

You, the people of Madmen, will also be silenced;

the sword will pursue you.

This message was given concerning Moab. This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, says:

“What sorrow awaits the city of Nebo;

it will soon lie in ruins.

The city of Kiriathaim will be humiliated and captured;

No one will ever brag about Moab again,

for in Heshbon there is a plot to destroy her.

‘Come,’ they say, ‘we will cut her off from being a nation.’

The town of Madmen, too, will be silenced;

the sword will follow you there.
