Jeremiah 47:6–7

6 “ ‘Alas, sword of the Lord,

how long till you rest?

Return to your sheath;

cease and be still.’

7 But how can it rest

when the Lord has commanded it,

when he has ordered it

to attack Ashkelon and the coast?”

6 O thou sword of the Lord, how long will it be ere thou be quiet?

Put up thyself into thy scabbard, rest, and be still.

7 How can it be quiet, seeing the Lord hath given it a charge

Against Ashkelon, and against the sea shore? there hath he appointed it.

6 “Now, O sword of the Lord,

when will you be at rest again?

Go back into your sheath;

rest and be still.

7 “But how can it be still

when the Lord has sent it on a mission?

For the city of Ashkelon

and the people living along the sea

must be destroyed.”

6 “O you sword of the Lord,

How long until you are quiet?

Put yourself up into your scabbard,

Rest and be still!

7 How can it be quiet,

Seeing the Lord has given it a charge

Against Ashkelon and against the seashore?

There He has appointed it.”

6 “You cry, ‘Sword of the Lord,

how long will you keep fighting?

Return to your holder.

Stop and be still.’

7 But how can his sword rest

when the Lord has given it a command?

He has ordered it

to attack Ashkelon and the seacoast.”

6 O thou sword of Jehovah, how long will it be ere thou be quiet? put up thyself into thy scabbard; rest, and be still. 7 How canst thou be quiet, seeing Jehovah hath given thee a charge? Against Ashkelon, and against the sea-shore, there hath he appointed it.

6 Alas! sword of Jehovah, how long wilt thou not be quiet? Withdraw into thy scabbard, rest, and be still. 7 How shouldest thou be quiet? —For Jehovah hath given it a charge: against Ashkelon, and against the sea shore, there hath he appointed it.

6 You cry out, “Sword of the Lord, 

how long will you keep on fighting? 

Go back into your scabbard. 

Stay there and rest!” 

7 How can the sword of the Lord rest? 

The Lord has ordered it to attack Ashkelon and the coast. 

He has put it there. 

6 Oh, sword of the Lord!

How long will you be restless?

Go back to your sheath;

be still; be silent!

7 How can it rest

when the Lord has given it a command?

He has assigned it

against Ashkelon and the shore of the sea.

6 Ah, sword of the Lord!

How long until you are quiet?

Put yourself into your scabbard;

rest and be still!

7 How can it be quiet,

when the Lord has given it an order?

Against Ashkelon and against the seashore—

there he has appointed it.

6 Ah, sword of Yahweh,

how long will you not be quiet?

Gather to your sheath,

keep quiet and stand still.

7 How can you be quiet

when Yahweh has given an order to it?

Against Ashkelon and against the shore of the sea,

there he has appointed it.”

6 “ ‘Sword of the Lord!’ you cry out.

‘How long will it be until you rest?

Return to the place you came from.

Stop killing us! Be still!’

7 But how can my sword rest

when I have given it a command?

I have ordered it

to attack Ashkelon and the Philistine coast.”

6 “Ah, sword of the Lord,

How long will you not be quiet?

Withdraw into your sheath;

Be at rest and stay still.

7 “How can it be quiet,

When the Lord has given it an order?

Against Ashkelon and against the seacoast—

There He has assigned it.”
