Jeremiah 46:21–25

21 The mercenaries in her ranks

are like fattened calves.

They too will turn and flee together,

they will not stand their ground,

for the day of disaster is coming upon them,

the time for them to be punished.

22 Egypt will hiss like a fleeing serpent

as the enemy advances in force;

they will come against her with axes,

like men who cut down trees.

23 They will chop down her forest,”

declares the Lord,

“dense though it be.

They are more numerous than locusts,

they cannot be counted.

24 Daughter Egypt will be put to shame,

given into the hands of the people of the north.”

25 The Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: “I am about to bring punishment on Amon god of Thebes, on Pharaoh, on Egypt and her gods and her kings, and on those who rely on Pharaoh.

21 Also her hired men are in the midst of her like fatted bullocks;

For they also are turned back, and are fled away together: they did not stand,

Because the day of their calamity was come upon them, and the time of their visitation.

22 The voice thereof shall go like a serpent;

For they shall march with an army,

And come against her with axes, as hewers of wood.

23 They shall cut down her forest, saith the Lord,

Though it cannot be searched;

Because they are more than the grasshoppers,

And are innumerable.

24 The daughter of Egypt shall be confounded;

She shall be delivered into the hand of the people of the north.

25 The Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, saith;

Behold, I will punish the multitude of No,

And Pharaoh, and Egypt, with their gods, and their kings;

Even Pharaoh, and all them that trust in him:

21 Egypt’s mercenaries have become like fattened calves.

They, too, will turn and run,

for it is a day of great disaster for Egypt,

a time of great punishment.

22 Egypt flees, silent as a serpent gliding away.

The invading army marches in;

they come against her with axes like woodsmen.

23 They will cut down her people like trees,” says the Lord,

“for they are more numerous than locusts.

24 Egypt will be humiliated;

she will be handed over to people from the north.”

25 The Lord of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, says: “I will punish Amon, the god of Thebes, and all the other gods of Egypt. I will punish its rulers and Pharaoh, too, and all who trust in him.

21 Also her mercenaries are in her midst like fat bulls,

For they also are turned back,

They have fled away together.

They did not stand,

For the day of their calamity had come upon them,

The time of their punishment.

22 Her noise shall go like a serpent,

For they shall march with an army

And come against her with axes,

Like those who chop wood.

23 “They shall cut down her forest,” says the Lord,

“Though it cannot be searched,

Because they are innumerable,

And more numerous than grasshoppers.

24 The daughter of Egypt shall be ashamed;

She shall be delivered into the hand

Of the people of the north.”

25 The Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, says: “Behold, I will bring punishment on Amon of No, and Pharaoh and Egypt, with their gods and their kings—Pharaoh and those who trust in him.

21 The hired soldiers in Egypt’s army

are like fat calves,

because even they all turn and run away together;

they do not stand strong against the attack.

Their time of destruction is coming;

they will soon be punished.

22 Egypt is like a hissing snake that is trying to escape.

The enemy comes closer and closer.

They come against Egypt with axes

like men who cut down trees.

23 They will chop down Egypt’s army

as if it were a great forest,” says the Lord.

“There are more enemy soldiers than locusts;

there are too many to count.

24 The people of Egypt will be ashamed.

They will be handed over to the enemy from the north.”

25 The Lord All-Powerful, the God of Israel, says: “Very soon I will punish Amon, the god of the city of Thebes. And I will punish Egypt, her kings, her gods, and the people who depend on the king.

21 Also her hired men in the midst of her are like calves of the stall; for they also are turned back, they are fled away together, they did not stand: for the day of their calamity is come upon them, the time of their visitation. 22 The sound thereof shall go like the serpent; for they shall march with an army, and come against her with axes, as hewers of wood. 23 They shall cut down her forest, saith Jehovah, though it cannot be searched; because they are more than the locusts, and are innumerable. 24 The daughter of Egypt shall be put to shame; she shall be delivered into the hand of the people of the north. 25 Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel, saith: Behold, I will punish Amon of No, and Pharaoh, and Egypt, with her gods, and her kings; even Pharaoh, and them that trust in him:

21 Egypt’s hired soldiers are like fattened calves. 

They will turn and run away together. 

They won’t stand their ground. 

The day of destruction is coming. 

At that time they will be punished. 

22 Egypt will hiss like a snake as it slithers away. 

Its enemies will come with full force. 

They will attack it with axes like those who chop wood. 

23 They will cut down the forest,” declares the Lord, 

“since Egypt can’t be found. 

They are more numerous than locusts; they can’t be counted. 

24 The people of Egypt will be put to shame. 

They will be handed over to the people from the north.” 

25 The Lord of Armies, the God of Israel, says, 

“I’m going to punish Amon, who is the god of Thebes. 

I will also punish Pharaoh, Egypt, its gods, its kings, 

and whoever trusts Pharaoh. 

21 Even her mercenaries among her

are like stall-fed calves.

They too will turn back;

together they will flee;

they will not take their stand,

for the day of their calamity is coming on them,

the time of their punishment.

22 Egypt will hiss like a slithering snake,

for the enemy will come with an army;

with axes they will come against her

like those who cut trees.

23 They will cut down her forest—

this is the Lord’s declaration—

though it is dense,

for they are more numerous than locusts;

they cannot be counted.

24 Daughter Egypt will be put to shame,

handed over to a northern people.

25 The Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: “I am about to punish Amon, god of Thebes, along with Pharaoh, Egypt, her gods, and her kings—Pharaoh and those trusting in him.

for the day of their calamity has come upon them,

the time of their punishment.

22 She makes a sound like a snake gliding away,

for her enemies march in force

and come against her with axes,

like those who fell trees.

23 They shall cut down her forest,

says the Lord,

though it is impenetrable,

because they are more numerous

than locusts;

they are without number.

24 Daughter Egypt shall be put to shame;

she shall be handed over to a people from the north.

25 The Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, said: See, I am bringing punishment upon Amon of Thebes and Pharaoh and Egypt and her gods and her kings, upon Pharaoh and those who trust in him.

21 Even her mercenaries in her midst are like calves of fattening,

for they also have turned away,

they have fled together.

They stand not,

for the day of their calamity has come upon them,

the time of their punishment.

22 Her sound is like a snake that glides away,

for they march in force.

And with axes they come to her

like those who chop trees.

23 They will cut down her forest,” declares Yahweh,

“for it is impenetrable.

Yes, they are more numerous than locusts,

and they are without number.

24 The daughter of Egypt will be ashamed,

she will be given into the hand of the people of the north.”

25 Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel, said, “Look, I am going to punish Amon of Thebes, and Pharaoh, and Egypt, and her gods, and her kings, even Pharaoh and those who trust in him.

21 Hired soldiers are in Egypt’s army.

They are like fat calves.

All of them will turn and run away.

They will not hold their positions.

The day of trouble is coming on them.

The time for them to be punished is near.

22 The Egyptians will hiss like a snake that is trying to get away.

A powerful army will advance against them.

Their enemies will come against them with axes.

They will be like those who cut down trees.

23 Egypt is like a thick forest.

But they will chop it down,”

announces the Lord.

“There are more of them than there are locusts.

In fact, they can’t even be counted.

24 The nation of Egypt will be put to shame.

It will be handed over to the people of the north.”

25 The Lord who rules over all is the God of Israel. He says, “I am about to punish Amon, the god of Thebes. I will also punish Pharaoh. I will punish Egypt and its gods and kings. And I will punish those who depend on Pharaoh.

21 “Also her mercenaries in her midst

Are like fattened calves,

For even they too have turned back and have fled away together;

They did not stand their ground.

For the day of their calamity has come upon them,

The time of their punishment.

22 “Its sound moves along like a serpent;

For they move on like an army

And come to her as woodcutters with axes.

23 “They have cut down her forest,” declares the Lord;

“Surely it will no more be found,

Even though they are now more numerous than locusts

And are without number.

24 “The daughter of Egypt has been put to shame,

Given over to the power of the people of the north.”

25 The Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, says, “Behold, I am going to punish Amon of Thebes, and Pharaoh, and Egypt along with her gods and her kings, even Pharaoh and those who trust in him.
