Jeremiah 20:15–18
15 Cursed be the man who brought the news to my father,
“A son is born to you,”
omaking him very glad.
16 Let that man be like pthe cities
that the Lord overthrew without pity;
qlet him hear a cry in the morning
and an alarm at noon,
17 rbecause he did not kill me in the womb;
so my mother would have been my grave,
and her womb forever great.
18 sWhy did I come out from the womb
tto see toil and sorrow,
and spend my days in shame?
Jeremiah 20:15–18 — The New International Version (NIV)
15 Cursed be the man who brought my father the news,
who made him very glad, saying,
“A child is born to you—a son!”
16 May that man be like the towns
the Lord overthrew without pity.
May he hear wailing in the morning,
a battle cry at noon.
17 For he did not kill me in the womb,
with my mother as my grave,
her womb enlarged forever.
18 Why did I ever come out of the womb
to see trouble and sorrow
and to end my days in shame?
Jeremiah 20:15–18 — King James Version (KJV 1900)
15 Cursed be the man who brought tidings to my father, saying,
A man child is born unto thee;
Making him very glad.
16 And let that man be as the cities which the Lord overthrew, and repented not:
And let him hear the cry in the morning, and the shouting at noontide;
17 Because he slew me not from the womb;
Or that my mother might have been my grave,
And her womb to be always great with me.
18 Wherefore came I forth out of the womb
To see labour and sorrow,
That my days should be consumed with shame?
Jeremiah 20:15–18 — New Living Translation (NLT)
15 I curse the messenger who told my father,
“Good news—you have a son!”
16 Let him be destroyed like the cities of old
that the Lord overthrew without mercy.
Terrify him all day long with battle shouts,
17 because he did not kill me at birth.
Oh, that I had died in my mother’s womb,
that her body had been my grave!
18 Why was I ever born?
My entire life has been filled
with trouble, sorrow, and shame.
Jeremiah 20:15–18 — The New King James Version (NKJV)
15 Let the man be cursed
Who brought news to my father, saying,
“A male child has been born to you!”
Making him very glad.
16 And let that man be like the cities
Which the Lord—overthrew, and did not relent;
Let him hear the cry in the morning
And the shouting at noon,
17 Because he did not kill me from the womb,
That my mother might have been my grave,
And her womb always enlarged with me.
18 Why did I come forth from the womb to see labor and sorrow,
That my days should be consumed with shame?
Jeremiah 20:15–18 — New Century Version (NCV)
15 Let there be a curse on the man
who brought my father the news:
“You have a son!”
This made my father very glad.
16 Let that man be like the towns
the Lord destroyed without pity.
Let him hear loud crying in the morning
and battle cries at noon,
17 because he did not kill me before I was born.
Then my mother would have been my grave;
she would have stayed pregnant forever.
18 Why did I have to come out of my mother’s body?
All I have known is trouble and sorrow,
and my life will end in shame.
Jeremiah 20:15–18 — American Standard Version (ASV)
15 Cursed be the man who brought tidings to my father, saying, A man-child is born unto thee; making him very glad. 16 And let that man be as the cities which Jehovah overthrew, and repented not: and let him hear a cry in the morning, and shouting at noontime; 17 because he slew me not from the womb; and so my mother would have been my grave, and her womb always great. 18 Wherefore came I forth out of the womb to see labor and sorrow, that my days should be consumed with shame?
Jeremiah 20:15–18 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)
15 Cursed be the man who brought tidings to my father, saying, A man child is born unto thee; making him very glad! 16 And let that man be as the cities which Jehovah overthrew, and repented not; and let him hear a cry in the morning, and a shouting at noonday, 17 because he slew me not from the womb. Or would that my mother had been my grave, and her womb always great with me! 18 Wherefore came I forth from the womb to see labour and sorrow, that my days should be consumed in shame?
Jeremiah 20:15–18 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)
15 Cursed is the man who made my father very happy with the news
that he had just become the father of a baby boy.
16 May that man be like the cities
that the Lord destroyed without pity.
May he hear a cry of alarm in the morning
and a battle cry at noon.
17 If only he had killed me while I was in the womb.
Then my mother would have been my grave,
and she would have always been pregnant.
18 Why did I come out of the womb?
All I’ve seen is trouble and grief.
I will finish my days in shame.
Jeremiah 20:15–18 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)
15 May the man be cursed
who brought the news to my father, saying,
“A male child is born to you,”
bringing him great joy.
16 Let that man be like the cities
the Lord demolished without compassion.
Let him hear an outcry in the morning
and a war cry at noontime
17 because he didn’t kill me in the womb
so that my mother might have been my grave,
her womb eternally pregnant.
18 Why did I come out of the womb
to see only struggle and sorrow,
to end my life in shame?

who brought the news to my father, saying,
“A child is born to you, a son,”
making him very glad.
16 Let that man be like the cities
that the Lord overthrew without pity;
let him hear a cry in the morning
and an alarm at noon,
17 because he did not kill me in the womb;
so my mother would have been my grave,
and her womb forever great.
18 Why did I come forth from the womb
to see toil and sorrow,
and spend my days in shame?

15 Cursed be the man who brought the news to my father,
saying, “A child is born to you, a son!”
and he made him very glad.
16 And let that man be like the cities
that Yahweh demolished without regret,
and let him hear a cry for help in the morning,
and an alarm at the time of noon.
17 Because he did not kill me in the womb,
so that my mother would have been for me my grave,
and her womb would be pregnant forever.
18 Why did I come out from the womb,
to see toil, and sorrow, and to end my days in shame?
Jeremiah 20:15–18 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)
15 May the man who brought my father the news be under a curse!
He’s the one who made my father very glad.
He said, “You have had a baby! It’s a boy!”
16 May that man be like the towns
the Lord destroyed without pity.
May that man hear loud sobs in the morning.
May he hear a battle cry at noon.
17 He should have killed me in my mother’s body.
He should have made my mother my grave.
He should have let her body stay large forever.
18 Why did I ever come out of my mother’s body?
I’ve seen nothing but trouble and sorrow.
My days will end in shame.
Jeremiah 20:15–18 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)
15 Cursed be the man who brought the news
To my father, saying,
“A baby boy has been born to you!”
And made him very happy.
16 But let that man be like the cities
Which the Lord overthrew without relenting,
And let him hear an outcry in the morning
And a shout of alarm at noon;
17 Because he did not kill me before birth,
So that my mother would have been my grave,
And her womb ever pregnant.
18 Why did I ever come forth from the womb
To look on trouble and sorrow,
So that my days have been spent in shame?
