Jeremiah 13:22–27 — The New International Version (NIV)

22 And if you ask yourself,

“Why has this happened to me?”—

it is because of your many sins

that your skirts have been torn off

and your body mistreated.

23 Can an Ethiopian change his skin

or a leopard its spots?

Neither can you do good

who are accustomed to doing evil.

24 “I will scatter you like chaff

driven by the desert wind.

25 This is your lot,

the portion I have decreed for you,”

declares the Lord,

“because you have forgotten me

and trusted in false gods.

26 I will pull up your skirts over your face

that your shame may be seen—

27 your adulteries and lustful neighings,

your shameless prostitution!

I have seen your detestable acts

on the hills and in the fields.

Woe to you, Jerusalem!

How long will you be unclean?”

Jeremiah 13:22–27 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

22 And if thou say in thine heart, Wherefore come these things upon me? For the greatness of thine iniquity are thy skirts discovered, and thy heels made bare. 23 Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots? then may ye also do good, that are accustomed to do evil. 24 Therefore will I scatter them as the stubble that passeth away by the wind of the wilderness. 25 This is thy lot, the portion of thy measures from me, saith the Lord; because thou hast forgotten me, and trusted in falsehood. 26 Therefore will I discover thy skirts upon thy face, that thy shame may appear. 27 I have seen thine adulteries, and thy neighings, the lewdness of thy whoredom, and thine abominations on the hills in the fields. Woe unto thee, O Jerusalem! wilt thou not be made clean? when shall it once be?

Jeremiah 13:22–27 — New Living Translation (NLT)

22 You may ask yourself,

“Why is all this happening to me?”

It is because of your many sins!

That is why you have been stripped

and raped by invading armies.

23 Can an Ethiopian change the color of his skin?

Can a leopard take away its spots?

Neither can you start doing good,

for you have always done evil.

24 “I will scatter you like chaff

that is blown away by the desert winds.

25 This is your allotment,

the portion I have assigned to you,”

says the Lord,

“for you have forgotten me,

putting your trust in false gods.

26 I myself will strip you

and expose you to shame.

27 I have seen your adultery and lust,

and your disgusting idol worship out in the fields and on the hills.

What sorrow awaits you, Jerusalem!

How long before you are pure?”

Jeremiah 13:22–27 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

22 And if you say in your heart,

“Why have these things come upon me?”

For the greatness of your iniquity

Your skirts have been uncovered,

Your heels made bare.

23 Can the Ethiopian change his skin or the leopard its spots?

Then may you also do good who are accustomed to do evil.

24 “Therefore I will scatter them like stubble

That passes away by the wind of the wilderness.

25 This is your lot,

The portion of your measures from Me,” says the Lord,

“Because you have forgotten Me

And trusted in falsehood.

26 Therefore I will uncover your skirts over your face,

That your shame may appear.

27 I have seen your adulteries

And your lustful neighings,

The lewdness of your harlotry,

Your abominations on the hills in the fields.

Woe to you, O Jerusalem!

Will you still not be made clean?”

Jeremiah 13:22–27 — New Century Version (NCV)

22 You might ask yourself,

“Why has this happened to me?”

It happened because of your many sins.

Because of your sins, your skirt was torn off

and your body has been treated badly.

23 Can a person from Cush change the color of his skin?

Can a leopard change his spots?

In the same way, Jerusalem, you cannot change and do good,

because you are accustomed to doing evil.

24 “I will scatter you like chaff that is blown away by the desert wind.

25 This is what will happen to you;

this is your part in my plans,” says the Lord.

“Because you forgot me

and trusted in false gods,

26 I will pull your skirts up over your face

so everyone will see your shame.

27 I have seen the terrible things you have done:

your acts of adultery and your snorting,

your prostitution,

your hateful acts

on the hills and in the fields.

How terrible it will be for you, Jerusalem.

How long will you continue being unclean?”

Jeremiah 13:22–27 — American Standard Version (ASV)

22 And if thou say in thy heart, Wherefore are these things come upon me? for the greatness of thine iniquity are thy skirts uncovered, and thy heels suffer violence. 23 Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots? then may ye also do good, that are accustomed to do evil. 24 Therefore will I scatter them, as the stubble that passeth away, by the wind of the wilderness. 25 This is thy lot, the portion measured unto thee from me, saith Jehovah; because thou hast forgotten me, and trusted in falsehood. 26 Therefore will I also uncover thy skirts upon thy face, and thy shame shall appear. 27 I have seen thine abominations, even thine adulteries, and thy neighings, the lewdness of thy whoredom, on the hills in the field. Woe unto thee, O Jerusalem! thou wilt not be made clean; how long shall it yet be?

Jeremiah 13:22–27 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

22 And if thou say in thy heart, Wherefore come these things upon me? For the greatness of thine iniquity are thy skirts uncovered, and thy heels have suffered violence. 23 Can an Ethiopian change his skin, or a leopard his spots? Then may ye also do good, who are accustomed to do evil. 24 And I will scatter them as stubble that passeth away by the wind of the wilderness. 25 This shall be thy lot, thy measured portion from me, saith Jehovah; because thou hast forgotten me, and confided in falsehood. 26 Therefore will I also turn thy skirts over thy face, and thy shame shall be seen. 27 Thine adulteries, and thy neighings, the lewdness of thy fornication, on the hills, in the fields, —thine abominations, have I seen. Woe unto thee, Jerusalem! Wilt thou not be made clean? after how long a time yet?

Jeremiah 13:22–27 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

22 If you ask yourself,

“Why do these things happen to me?”

it’s because you have so many sins.

Your clothes have been torn off

and your limbs are bare.

23 Can Ethiopians change the color of their skin

or leopards change their spots?

Can you do good

when you’re taught to do wrong?

24 “I will scatter you like straw that is blown away by a desert wind.

25 This is your fate, the destiny I have planned for you,”

declares the Lord

“You have forgotten me and trusted false gods.

26 I will also tear off your clothes,

and your shame will be seen.

27 I have seen you commit adultery and squeal with delight.

I have seen you act like a shameless prostitute

on the hills and in the fields.

How horrible it will be for you, Jerusalem!

Will you ever be clean?”

Jeremiah 13:22–27 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

22 And when you ask yourself,

“Why have these things happened to me?”

It is because of your great guilt

that your skirts have been stripped off,

your body exposed.

23 Can the Cushite change his skin,

or a leopard his spots?

If so, you might be able to do what is good,

you who are instructed in evil.

24 I will scatter you like drifting chaff

before the desert wind.

25 This is your lot,

what I have decreed for you—

this is the Lord’s declaration—

because you have forgotten Me

and trusted in Falsehood.

26 I will pull your skirts up over your face

so that your shame might be seen.

27 Your adulteries and your lustful neighing,

your heinous prostitution

on the hills, in the fields—

I have seen your detestable acts.

Woe to you, Jerusalem!

You are unclean—

for how long yet?

Jeremiah 13:22–27 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

22 And if you say in your heart,

“Why have these things come upon me?”

it is for the greatness of your iniquity

that your skirts are lifted up,

and you are violated.

23 Can Ethiopians change their skin

or leopards their spots?

Then also you can do good

who are accustomed to do evil.

24 I will scatter you like chaff

driven by the wind from the desert.

25 This is your lot,

the portion I have measured out to you, says the Lord,

because you have forgotten me

and trusted in lies.

26 I myself will lift up your skirts over your face,

and your shame will be seen.

27 I have seen your abominations,

your adulteries and neighings, your shameless prostitutions

on the hills of the countryside.

Woe to you, O Jerusalem!

How long will it be

before you are made clean?

Jeremiah 13:22–27 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

22 And if you say in your heart,

‘Why have these things happened to me?’

Because of the greatness of your iniquity your skirts are uncovered;

your heels have endured violence.

23 Can a Cushite change his skin,

or a leopard his spots?

Then you also will be able to do good,

who are accustomed to doing evil.

24 And I will scatter them

like stubble scattered by the wind of the desert.

25 This is your lot,

the portion of your measure from me,” declares Yahweh,

“because you have forgotten me,

and you have trusted in the lie.

26 So in turn I will bare your skirts over your face,

and your shame will become visible.

27 Your adulteries, and your neighings,

the shameful behavior of your fornications

on the hills in the countryside,

I have seen your abominations.

Woe to you, O Jerusalem!

How long will you continue to be unclean?”

Jeremiah 13:22–27 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

22 Suppose you ask yourself,

“Why has this happened to me?”

It’s because you have committed so many sins.

That’s the reason your skirt has been torn off.

That’s why your body has been treated so badly.

23 Can people from Ethiopia change their skin?

Can leopards change their spots?

It’s the same with you.

You have always done what is evil.

So how can you do what is good?

24 The Lord says, “I will scatter you like straw

that the desert wind blows away.

25 That is what will happen to you.

I have appointed it for you,”

announces the Lord.

“You have forgotten me.

You have trusted in other gods.

26 So I will pull your skirt up over your face.

Then people will see the shame of your naked body.

27 They will see that you have not been faithful to me.

You have committed adultery with other gods.

And you have acted like a prostitute

who does not have any shame.

I have seen what you did

on the hills and in the fields.

And I hate it.

How terrible it will be for you, Jerusalem!

How long will you choose to be ‘unclean’?”

Jeremiah 13:22–27 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

22 If you say in your heart,

Why have these things happened to me?’

Because of the magnitude of your iniquity

Your skirts have been removed

And your heels have been exposed.

23 “Can the Ethiopian change his skin

Or the leopard his spots?

Then you also can do good

Who are accustomed to doing evil.

24 “Therefore I will scatter them like drifting straw

To the desert wind.

25 This is your lot, the portion measured to you

From Me,” declares the Lord,

Because you have forgotten Me

And trusted in falsehood.

26 “So I Myself have also stripped your skirts off over your face,

That your shame may be seen.

27 “As for your adulteries and your lustful neighings,

The lewdness of your prostitution

On the hills in the field,

I have seen your abominations.

Woe to you, O Jerusalem!

How long will you remain unclean?”
