Isaiah 9:17–20 — The New International Version (NIV)

17 Therefore the Lord will take no pleasure in the young men,

nor will he pity the fatherless and widows,

for everyone is ungodly and wicked,

every mouth speaks folly.

Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away,

his hand is still upraised.

18 Surely wickedness burns like a fire;

it consumes briers and thorns,

it sets the forest thickets ablaze,

so that it rolls upward in a column of smoke.

19 By the wrath of the Lord Almighty

the land will be scorched

and the people will be fuel for the fire;

they will not spare one another.

20 On the right they will devour,

but still be hungry;

on the left they will eat,

but not be satisfied.

Each will feed on the flesh of their own offspring:

Isaiah 9:17–20 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

17 Therefore the Lord shall have no joy in their young men,

Neither shall have mercy on their fatherless and widows:

For every one is an hypocrite and an evildoer,

And every mouth speaketh folly.

For all this his anger is not turned away,

But his hand is stretched out still.

18 For wickedness burneth as the fire:

It shall devour the briers and thorns,

And shall kindle in the thickets of the forest,

And they shall mount up like the lifting up of smoke.

19 Through the wrath of the Lord of hosts is the land darkened,

And the people shall be as the fuel of the fire:

No man shall spare his brother.

20 And he shall snatch on the right hand, and be hungry;

And he shall eat on the left hand, and they shall not be satisfied:

They shall eat every man the flesh of his own arm:

Isaiah 9:17–20 — New Living Translation (NLT)

17 That is why the Lord takes no pleasure in the young men

and shows no mercy even to the widows and orphans.

For they are all wicked hypocrites,

and they all speak foolishness.

But even then the Lord’s anger will not be satisfied.

His fist is still poised to strike.

18 This wickedness is like a brushfire.

It burns not only briers and thorns

but also sets the forests ablaze.

Its burning sends up clouds of smoke.

19 The land will be blackened

by the fury of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.

The people will be fuel for the fire,

and no one will spare even his own brother.

20 They will attack their neighbor on the right

but will still be hungry.

They will devour their neighbor on the left

but will not be satisfied.

In the end they will even eat their own children.

Isaiah 9:17–20 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

17 Therefore the Lord will have no joy in their young men,

Nor have mercy on their fatherless and widows;

For everyone is a hypocrite and an evildoer,

And every mouth speaks folly.

For all this His anger is not turned away,

But His hand is stretched out still.

18 For wickedness burns as the fire;

It shall devour the briers and thorns,

And kindle in the thickets of the forest;

They shall mount up like rising smoke.

19 Through the wrath of the Lord of hosts

The land is burned up,

And the people shall be as fuel for the fire;

No man shall spare his brother.

20 And he shall snatch on the right hand

And be hungry;

He shall devour on the left hand

And not be satisfied;

Every man shall eat the flesh of his own arm.

Isaiah 9:17–20 — New Century Version (NCV)

17 So the Lord is not happy with the young people,

nor will he show mercy to the orphans and widows.

All the people are separated from God and are very evil;

they all speak lies.

But the Lord is still angry;

his hand is still raised to strike down the people.

18 Evil is like a small fire.

First, it burns weeds and thorns.

Next, it burns the larger bushes in the forest,

and they all go up in a column of smoke.

19 The Lord All-Powerful is angry,

so the land will be burned.

The people are like fuel for the fire;

no one will try to save his brother or sister.

20 People will grab something on the right,

but they will still be hungry.

They will eat something on the left,

but they will not be filled.

Then they will each turn and eat their own children.

Isaiah 9:17–20 — American Standard Version (ASV)

17 Therefore the Lord will not rejoice over their young men, neither will he have compassion on their fatherless and widows; for every one is profane and an evil-doer, and every mouth speaketh folly. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

18 For wickedness burneth as the fire; it devoureth the briers and thorns; yea, it kindleth in the thickets of the forest, and they roll upward in a column of smoke. 19 Through the wrath of Jehovah of hosts is the land burnt up; and the people are as the fuel of fire: no man spareth his brother. 20 And one shall snatch on the right hand, and be hungry; and he shall eat on the left hand, and they shall not be satisfied: they shall eat every man the flesh of his own arm:

Isaiah 9:17–20 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

17 Therefore the Lord will not rejoice in their young men, neither will he have mercy on their fatherless and on their widows; for every one is a hypocrite and an evildoer, and every mouth speaketh folly. For all this his anger is not turned away, and his hand is stretched out still. 18 For wickedness burneth as a fire: it devoureth briars and thorns, and kindleth in the thickets of the forest, and they go rolling up like a pillar of smoke. 19 Through the wrath of Jehovah of hosts is the land burned up, and the people is as fuel for fire: a man spareth not his brother; 20 and he snatcheth on the right hand, and is hungry, and eateth on the left hand; and they are not satisfied. They eat every man the flesh of his own arm:

Isaiah 9:17–20 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

17 That is why the Lord isn’t happy with their young men,

nor will he show compassion for their orphans and widows.

Every one of them is a godless evildoer,

and every mouth speaks foolishness.

Even after all this, his anger will not disappear,

and he is still ready to use his power.

18 Surely wickedness burns like fire.

It burns up briars and thorns.

It sets the underbrush in the forest on fire,

and it whirls upward in clouds of smoke.

19 The land is scorched by the fury of the Lord of Armies,

and the people are like fuel for the fire.

No one shows concern for others:

20 On the right, one gobbles up food and is still hungry.

On the left, another eats and is never full.

Each person eats the flesh from his own arm.

Isaiah 9:17–20 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

17 Therefore the Lord does not rejoice

over Israel’s young men

and has no compassion

on its fatherless and widows,

for everyone is a godless evildoer,

and every mouth speaks folly.

In all this, His anger is not removed,

and His hand is still raised to strike.

18 For wickedness burns like a fire

that consumes thorns and briers

and kindles the forest thickets

so that they go up in a column of smoke.

19 The land is scorched

by the wrath of the Lord of Hosts,

and the people are like fuel for the fire.

No one has compassion on his brother.

20 They carve meat on the right,

but they are still hungry;

they have eaten on the left,

but they are still not satisfied.

Each one eats the flesh of his own arm.

Isaiah 9:17–20 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

17 That is why the Lord did not have pity on their young people,

or compassion on their orphans and widows;

for everyone was godless and an evildoer,

and every mouth spoke folly.

For all this his anger has not turned away;

his hand is stretched out still.

18 For wickedness burned like a fire,

consuming briers and thorns;

it kindled the thickets of the forest,

and they swirled upward in a column of smoke.

19 Through the wrath of the Lord of hosts

the land was burned,

and the people became like fuel for the fire;

no one spared another.

20 They gorged on the right, but still were hungry,

and they devoured on the left, but were not satisfied;

they devoured the flesh of their own kindred;

Isaiah 9:17–20 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

17 Therefore the Lord did not rejoice over its young men,

and he did not have compassion on its orphans and widows,

for everyone was godless and an evildoer,

and every mouth was speaking folly.

In all of this his anger did not turn away,

and still his hand is stretched out.

18 For wickedness burned like fire;

it consumed brier and thorn.

And it kindled the thickets of the forest,

and they swirled upward in a column of smoke.

19 The land was burned through the wrath of Yahweh of hosts,

and the people became like fire fuel.

People had no compassion toward each other.

20 They devoured on the right but still were hungry

and devoured on the left but they were not satisfied.

Each one devoured the flesh of his arm,

Isaiah 9:17–20 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

17 The Lord will not be pleased with the young men.

He won’t take pity on widows and on children whose fathers have died.

All of them are ungodly and evil.

They say sinful things with their mouths.

Even then, the Lord is still angry.

His hand is still raised against them.

18 What is evil burns like a fire.

It burns up bushes and thorns.

It sets the forest on fire.

It sends up a huge column of smoke.

19 The Lord rules over all.

When he gets angry, he will burn up the land.

The people will die.

Men will eat their brothers.

20 People will eat up everything they can find on their right.

But they’ll still be hungry.

They will eat everything they can find on their left.

But they won’t be satisfied.

So they will eat the dead bodies of their children.

Isaiah 9:17–20 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

17 Therefore the Lord does not take pleasure in their young men,

Nor does He have pity on their orphans or their widows;

For every one of them is godless and an evildoer,

And every mouth is speaking foolishness.

In spite of all this, His anger does not turn away

And His hand is still stretched out.

18 For wickedness burns like a fire;

It consumes briars and thorns;

It even sets the thickets of the forest aflame

And they roll upward in a column of smoke.

19 By the fury of the Lord of hosts the land is burned up,

And the people are like fuel for the fire;

No man spares his brother.

20 They slice off what is on the right hand but still are hungry,

And they eat what is on the left hand but they are not satisfied;

Each of them eats the flesh of his own arm.
