Isaiah 5:14–15

14 Therefore Death expands its jaws,

opening wide its mouth;

into it will descend their nobles and masses

with all their brawlers and revelers.

15 So people will be brought low

and everyone humbled,

the eyes of the arrogant humbled.

14 Therefore hell hath enlarged herself,

And opened her mouth without measure:

And their glory, and their multitude, and their pomp,

And he that rejoiceth, shall descend into it.

15 And the mean man shall be brought down,

And the mighty man shall be humbled,

And the eyes of the lofty shall be humbled:

14 The grave is licking its lips in anticipation,

opening its mouth wide.

The great and the lowly

and all the drunken mob will be swallowed up.

15 Humanity will be destroyed, and people brought down;

even the arrogant will lower their eyes in humiliation.

14 Therefore Sheol has enlarged itself

And opened its mouth beyond measure;

Their glory and their multitude and their pomp,

And he who is jubilant, shall descend into it.

15 People shall be brought down,

Each man shall be humbled,

And the eyes of the lofty shall be humbled.

14 So the place of the dead wants more and more people,

and it opens wide its mouth.

Jerusalem’s important people and common people will go down into it,

with their happy and noisy ones.

15 So the common people and the great people will be brought down;

those who are proud will be humbled.

14 Therefore Sheol hath enlarged its desire, and opened its mouth without measure; and their glory, and their multitude, and their pomp, and he that rejoiceth among them, descend into it. 15 And the mean man is bowed down, and the great man is humbled, and the eyes of the lofty are humbled:

14 Therefore doth Sheol enlarge its desire, and open its mouth without measure; and her splendour shall descend into it, and her multitude, and her tumult, and all that is joyful within her. 15 And the mean man shall be bowed down, and the great man brought low, and the eyes of the lofty shall be brought low;

14 That is why the grave’s appetite increases. 

It opens its mouth very wide 

so that honored people and common people will go down into it. 

Those who are noisy and joyous will go down into it. 

15 People will be brought down. Everyone will be humbled. 

And the eyes of arrogant people will be humbled. 

14 Therefore Sheol enlarges its throat

and opens wide its enormous jaws,

and down go Zion’s dignitaries, her masses,

her crowds, and those who carouse in her!

15 Humanity is brought low, man is humbled,

and haughty eyes are humbled.

14 Therefore Sheol has enlarged its appetite

and opened its mouth beyond measure;

the nobility of Jerusalem and her multitude go down,

her throng and all who exult in her.

15 People are bowed down, everyone is brought low,

and the eyes of the haughty are humbled.

14 Therefore Sheol has enlarged its throat,

and it has opened wide its mouth without limit,

and her nobles will go down, and her multitude,

her tumult and those who revel in her.

15 And humankind is bowed down,

and man is brought low,

and the eyes of the haughty are humiliated.

14 So the grave is hungry to receive them.

Its mouth is open wide to swallow them up.

Their nobles and the rest of the people will go down into it.

They will go there together with all those who have wild parties.

15 So man will be brought low.

People will be put to shame.

Those who brag will be brought down.

14 Therefore Sheol has enlarged its throat and opened its mouth without measure;

And Jerusalem’s splendor, her multitude, her din of revelry and the jubilant within her, descend into it.

15 So the common man will be humbled and the man of importance abased,

The eyes of the proud also will be abased.
