Isaiah 49:1–4 — The New International Version (NIV)

Listen to me, you islands;

hear this, you distant nations:

Before I was born the Lord called me;

from my mother’s womb he has spoken my name.

He made my mouth like a sharpened sword,

in the shadow of his hand he hid me;

he made me into a polished arrow

and concealed me in his quiver.

He said to me, “You are my servant,

Israel, in whom I will display my splendor.”

But I said, “I have labored in vain;

I have spent my strength for nothing at all.

Yet what is due me is in the Lord’s hand,

and my reward is with my God.”

Isaiah 49:1–4 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

Listen, O isles, unto me;

And hearken, ye people, from far;

The Lord hath called me from the womb;

From the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name.

And he hath made my mouth like a sharp sword;

In the shadow of his hand hath he hid me,

And made me a polished shaft;

In his quiver hath he hid me;

And said unto me, Thou art my servant,

O Israel, in whom I will be glorified.

Then I said, I have laboured in vain,

I have spent my strength for nought, and in vain:

Yet surely my judgment is with the Lord,

And my work with my God.

Isaiah 49:1–4 — New Living Translation (NLT)

Listen to me, all you in distant lands!

Pay attention, you who are far away!

The Lord called me before my birth;

from within the womb he called me by name.

He made my words of judgment as sharp as a sword.

He has hidden me in the shadow of his hand.

I am like a sharp arrow in his quiver.

He said to me, “You are my servant, Israel,

and you will bring me glory.”

I replied, “But my work seems so useless!

I have spent my strength for nothing and to no purpose.

Yet I leave it all in the Lord’s hand;

I will trust God for my reward.”

Isaiah 49:1–4 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

“Listen, O coastlands, to Me,

And take heed, you peoples from afar!

The Lord has called Me from the womb;

From the matrix of My mother He has made mention of My name.

And He has made My mouth like a sharp sword;

In the shadow of His hand He has hidden Me,

And made Me a polished shaft;

In His quiver He has hidden Me.”

“And He said to me,

‘You are My servant, O Israel,

In whom I will be glorified.’

Then I said, ‘I have labored in vain,

I have spent my strength for nothing and in vain;

Yet surely my just reward is with the Lord,

And my work with my God.’ ”

Isaiah 49:1–4 — New Century Version (NCV)

All of you people in faraway places, listen to me.

Listen, all you nations far away.

Before I was born, the Lord called me to serve him.

The Lord named me while I was still in my mother’s womb.

He made my tongue like a sharp sword.

He hid me in the shadow of his hand.

He made me like a sharp arrow.

He hid me in the holder for his arrows.

He told me, “Israel, you are my servant.

I will show my glory through you.”

But I said, “I have worked hard for nothing;

I have used all my power, but I did nothing useful.

But the Lord will decide what my work is worth;

God will decide my reward.”

Isaiah 49:1–4 — American Standard Version (ASV)

Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye peoples, from far: Jehovah hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name: and he hath made my mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of his hand hath he hid me: and he hath made me a polished shaft; in his quiver hath he kept me close: and he said unto me, Thou art my servant; Israel, in whom I will be glorified. But I said, I have labored in vain, I have spent my strength for nought and vanity; yet surely the justice due to me is with Jehovah, and my recompense with my God.

Isaiah 49:1–4 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye peoples from afar. Jehovah hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name. And he hath made my mouth like a sharp sword, he hath concealed me under the shadow of his hand, and he hath made me a polished shaft: in his quiver hath he hidden me. And he said unto me, Thou art my servant, Israel, in whom I will glorify myself. —And I said, I have laboured in vain, I have spent my strength for nought and in vain; nevertheless my judgment is with Jehovah, and my work with my God.

Isaiah 49:1–4 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

Listen to me, you islands.

Pay attention, you people far away.

Before I was born, the Lord chose me.

While I was in my mother’s womb, he recorded my name.

He made my tongue like a sharp sword

and hid me in the palm of his hand.

He made me like a sharpened arrow

and hid me in his quiver.

He said to me,

“You are my servant Israel.

I will display my glory through you.”

But I said,

“I have worked hard for nothing.

I have used my strength, but I didn’t accomplish anything.

Yet, certainly my case is in the Lord’s hands,

and my reward is with my God.”

Isaiah 49:1–4 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

Coastlands, listen to me;

distant peoples, pay attention.

The Lord called me before I was born.

He named me while I was in my mother’s womb.

He made my words like a sharp sword;

He hid me in the shadow of His hand.

He made me like a sharpened arrow;

He hid me in His quiver.

He said to me, “You are My Servant, Israel;

I will be glorified in him.”

But I myself said: I have labored in vain,

I have spent my strength for nothing and futility;

yet my vindication is with the Lord,

and my reward is with my God.

Isaiah 49:1–4 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

Listen to me, O coastlands,

pay attention, you peoples from far away!

The Lord called me before I was born,

while I was in my mother’s womb he named me.

He made my mouth like a sharp sword,

in the shadow of his hand he hid me;

he made me a polished arrow,

in his quiver he hid me away.

And he said to me, “You are my servant,

Israel, in whom I will be glorified.”

But I said, “I have labored in vain,

I have spent my strength for nothing and vanity;

yet surely my cause is with the Lord,

and my reward with my God.”

Isaiah 49:1–4 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

Listen to me, coastlands,

and listen attentively, peoples from far away!

Yahweh called me from the womb;

from the body of my mother he made my name known.

And he made my mouth like a sharp sword;

he hid me in the shadow of his hand,

and he made me like a sharpened arrow;

he hid me in his quiver.

And he said to me, “You are my servant,

Israel, in whom I will show my glory.”

But I myself said, “I have labored in vain;

I have used up my strength for nothing and vanity!

Nevertheless, my justice is with Yahweh,

and my reward is with my God.”

Isaiah 49:1–4 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

People who live on the islands, listen to me.

Pay attention, you nations far away.

Before I was born the Lord chose me to serve him.

He appointed me by name.

He made my words like a sharp sword.

He hid me in the palm of his hand.

He made me into a sharpened arrow.

He took good care of me and kept me safe.

He said to me, “You are my true servant Israel.

I will show my glory through you.”

But I said, “In spite of my hard work,

I feel as if I haven’t accomplished anything.

I’ve used up all of my strength.

It seems as if everything I’ve done is worthless.

But the Lord will give me what I should receive.

My God will reward me.”

Isaiah 49:1–4 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

Listen to Me, O islands,

And pay attention, you peoples from afar.

The Lord called Me from the womb;

From the body of My mother He named Me.

He has made My mouth like a sharp sword,

In the shadow of His hand He has concealed Me;

And He has also made Me a select arrow,

He has hidden Me in His quiver.

He said to Me, “You are My Servant, Israel,

In Whom I will show My glory.”

But I said, “I have toiled in vain,

I have spent My strength for nothing and vanity;

Yet surely the justice due to Me is with the Lord,

And My reward with My God.”
