18 Your covenant with death will be annulled;

your agreement with the realm of the dead will not stand.

When the overwhelming scourge sweeps by,

you will be beaten down by it.

19 As often as it comes it will carry you away;

morning after morning, by day and by night,

it will sweep through.”

The understanding of this message

will bring sheer terror.

20 The bed is too short to stretch out on,

the blanket too narrow to wrap around you.

21 The Lord will rise up as he did at Mount Perazim,

he will rouse himself as in the Valley of Gibeon—

to do his work, his strange work,

and perform his task, his alien task.

22 Now stop your mocking,

or your chains will become heavier;

the Lord, the Lord Almighty, has told me

of the destruction decreed against the whole land.

18 And your covenant with death shall be disannulled,

And your agreement with hell shall not stand;

When the overflowing scourge shall pass through,

Then ye shall be trodden down by it.

19 From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you:

For morning by morning shall it pass over, by day and by night:

And it shall be a vexation only to understand the report.

20 For the bed is shorter than that a man can stretch himself on it:

And the covering narrower than that he can wrap himself in it.

21 For the Lord shall rise up as in mount Perazim,

He shall be wroth as in the valley of Gibeon,

That he may do his work, his strange work;

And bring to pass his act, his strange act.

22 Now therefore be ye not mockers,

Lest your bands be made strong:

For I have heard from the Lord God of hosts

A consumption, even determined

Upon the whole earth.

18 I will cancel the bargain you made to cheat death,

and I will overturn your deal to dodge the grave.

When the terrible enemy sweeps through,

you will be trampled into the ground.

19 Again and again that flood will come,

morning after morning,

day and night,

until you are carried away.”

This message will bring terror to your people.

20 The bed you have made is too short to lie on.

The blankets are too narrow to cover you.

21 The Lord will come as he did against the Philistines at Mount Perazim

and against the Amorites at Gibeon.

He will come to do a strange thing;

he will come to do an unusual deed:

22 For the Lord, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies,

has plainly said that he is determined to crush the whole land.

So scoff no more,

or your punishment will be even greater.

18 Your covenant with death will be annulled,

And your agreement with Sheol will not stand;

When the overflowing scourge passes through,

Then you will be trampled down by it.

19 As often as it goes out it will take you;

For morning by morning it will pass over,

And by day and by night;

It will be a terror just to understand the report.”

20 For the bed is too short to stretch out on,

And the covering so narrow that one cannot wrap himself in it.

21 For the Lord will rise up as at Mount Perazim,

He will be angry as in the Valley of Gibeon—

That He may do His work, His awesome work,

And bring to pass His act, His unusual act.

22 Now therefore, do not be mockers,

Lest your bonds be made strong;

For I have heard from the Lord God of hosts,

A destruction determined even upon the whole earth.

18 Your agreement with death will be erased;

your contract with death will not help you.

When terrible punishment comes,

you will be crushed by it.

19 Whenever punishment comes, it will take you away.

It will come morning after morning;

it will defeat you by day and by night.

Those who understand this punishment will be terrified.”

20 You will be like the person who tried to sleep

on a bed that was too short

and with a blanket that was too narrow

to wrap around himself.

21 The Lord will fight as he did at Mount Perazim.

He will be angry as he was in the Valley of Gibeon.

He will do his work, his strange work.

He will finish his job, his strange job.

22 Now, you must not make fun of these things,

or the ropes around you will become tighter.

The Lord God All-Powerful has told me

how the whole earth will be destroyed.

18 And your covenant with death shall be annulled, and your agreement with Sheol shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it. 19 As often as it passeth through, it shall take you; for morning by morning shall it pass through, by day and by night: and it shall be nought but terror to understand the message. 20 For the bed is shorter than that a man can stretch himself on it; and the covering narrower than that he can wrap himself in it. 21 For Jehovah will rise up as in mount Perazim, he will be wroth as in the valley of Gibeon; that he may do his work, his strange work, and bring to pass his act, his strange act. 22 Now therefore be ye not scoffers, lest your bonds be made strong; for a decree of destruction have I heard from the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, upon the whole earth.

18 And your covenant with death shall be annulled, and your agreement with Sheol shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, ye shall be trodden down by it. 19 As it passeth through it shall take you; for morning by morning shall it pass through, by day and by night; and it shall be terror only to understand the report. 20 For the bed is too short to stretch oneself on, and the covering too narrow when he would wrap himself in it. 21 For Jehovah will rise up as on mount Perazim, he will be moved with anger as in the valley of Gibeon; that he may do his work, his strange work, and perform his act, his unwonted act. 22 Now therefore be ye not scorners, lest your bonds be made strong; for I have heard from the Lord Jehovah of hosts a consumption, and one determined, upon the whole land.

18 Your treaty with death will be wiped away. 

Your agreement with the grave will not stand. 

When the overwhelming disaster passes by, 

you will be trampled by it. 

19 Each time it passes by it will take you. 

It will pass by morning after morning, 

during the day and during the night. 

Understanding this message brings only terror. 

20 The bed is too short to stretch out on. 

The blanket is too narrow to serve as a cover. 

21 The Lord will rise as he did on Mount Perazim. 

He will wake up as he did in Gibeon Valley. 

He will do his work, his unexpected work, 

and perform his deeds, his mysterious deeds. 

22 Now stop laughing, or your chains will be tightened, 

because I have heard that the Almighty Lord of Armies 

has finally determined to destroy the whole land. 

18 Your deal with Death will be dissolved,

and your agreement with Sheol will not last.

When the overwhelming scourge passes through,

you will be trampled.

19 Every time it passes through,

it will carry you away;

it will pass through every morning—

every day and every night.

Only terror will cause you

to understand the message.

20 Indeed, the bed is too short to stretch out on,

and its cover too small to wrap up in.

21 For the Lord will rise up as He did at Mount Perazim.

He will rise in wrath, as at the Valley of Gibeon,

to do His work, His strange work,

and to perform His task, His disturbing task.

22 So now, do not mock,

or your shackles will become stronger.

Indeed, I have heard from the Lord God of Hosts

a decree of destruction for the whole land.

18 Then your covenant with death will be annulled,

and your agreement with Sheol will not stand;

when the overwhelming scourge passes through

you will be beaten down by it.

19 As often as it passes through, it will take you;

for morning by morning it will pass through,

by day and by night;

and it will be sheer terror to understand the message.

20 For the bed is too short to stretch oneself on it,

and the covering too narrow to wrap oneself in it.

21 For the Lord will rise up as on Mount Perazim,

he will rage as in the valley of Gibeon

to do his deed—strange is his deed!—

and to work his work—alien is his work!

22 Now therefore do not scoff,

or your bonds will be made stronger;

for I have heard a decree of destruction

from the Lord God of hosts upon the whole land.

18 And your covenant with death will be annulled,

and your agreement with Sheol will not stand;

you will become a trampling place for the overwhelming flood when it passes through.

19 As often as it passes through, it will take you,

for morning by morning it will pass through,

in the day and in the night,

and understanding the message will be only terror.”

20 For the bed is too short to stretch out on,

and the covering is too narrow when wrapping oneself.

21 For Yahweh will rise up as at Mount Perazim;

he will rave as in the valley at Gibeon

to do his deed—his deed is strange—

and to work his work—his work is alien!

22 And now you must not scoff,

or your bonds will be strong,

for I have heard from the Lord, Yahweh of hosts:

complete destruction

decreed upon all the land.

18 Your covenant with death will be called off.

The agreement you made with the grave will not stand.

When the terrible plague comes to punish you,

you will be beaten down by it.

19 As often as it comes, it will carry you away.

Morning after morning, day and night,

it will come to punish you.”

If you understand this message,

it will bring you absolute terror.

20 You will be like someone whose bed is too short to lie down on.

You will be like those whose blankets are too small to wrap themselves in.

21 The Lord will rise up to judge, just as he did at Mount Perazim.

He will get up to act, just as he did in the Valley of Gibeon.

He’ll do his work, but it will be strange work.

He’ll carry out his task, but it will be an unexpected one.

22 Now stop making fun of me.

If you don’t, your chains will become heavier.

The Lord who rules over all has spoken to me.

The Lord has told me he has ordered that the whole land be destroyed.

18 “Your covenant with death will be canceled,

And your pact with Sheol will not stand;

When the overwhelming scourge passes through,

Then you become its trampling place.

19 “As often as it passes through, it will seize you;

For morning after morning it will pass through, anytime during the day or night,

And it will be sheer terror to understand what it means.”

20 The bed is too short on which to stretch out,

And the blanket is too small to wrap oneself in.

21 For the Lord will rise up as at Mount Perazim,

He will be stirred up as in the valley of Gibeon,

To do His task, His unusual task,

And to work His work, His extraordinary work.

22 And now do not carry on as scoffers,

Or your fetters will be made stronger;

For I have heard from the Lord God of hosts

Of decisive destruction on all the earth.
