8 The word of the Lord came to me: 9 “Son of man, prophesy and say, ‘This is what the Lord says:

“ ‘A sword, a sword,

sharpened and polished—

10 sharpened for the slaughter,

polished to flash like lightning!

“ ‘Shall we rejoice in the scepter of my royal son? The sword despises every such stick.

11 “ ‘The sword is appointed to be polished,

to be grasped with the hand;

it is sharpened and polished,

made ready for the hand of the slayer.

12 Cry out and wail, son of man,

for it is against my people;

it is against all the princes of Israel.

They are thrown to the sword

along with my people.

Therefore beat your breast.

13 “ ‘Testing will surely come. And what if even the scepter, which the sword despises, does not continue? declares the Sovereign Lord.’

8 Again the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, 9 Son of man, prophesy, and say, Thus saith the Lord; Say, A sword, a sword is sharpened, and also furbished: 10 It is sharpened to make a sore slaughter; it is furbished that it may glitter: should we then make mirth? it contemneth the rod of my son, as every tree. 11 And he hath given it to be furbished, that it may be handled: this sword is sharpened, and it is furbished, to give it into the hand of the slayer. 12 Cry and howl, son of man: for it shall be upon my people, it shall be upon all the princes of Israel: terrors by reason of the sword shall be upon my people: smite therefore upon thy thigh. 13 Because it is a trial, and what if the sword contemn even the rod? it shall be no more, saith the Lord God.

8 Then the Lord said to me, 9 “Son of man, give the people this message from the Lord:

“A sword, a sword

is being sharpened and polished.

10 It is sharpened for terrible slaughter

and polished to flash like lightning!

Now will you laugh?

Those far stronger than you have fallen beneath its power!

11 Yes, the sword is now being sharpened and polished;

it is being prepared for the executioner.

12 “Son of man, cry out and wail;

pound your thighs in anguish,

for that sword will slaughter my people and their leaders—

everyone will die!

13 It will put them all to the test.

What chance do they have?

says the Sovereign Lord.

8 Again the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 9 “Son of man, prophesy and say, ‘Thus says the Lord!’ Say:

‘A sword, a sword is sharpened

And also polished!

10 Sharpened to make a dreadful slaughter,

Polished to flash like lightning!

Should we then make mirth?

It despises the scepter of My son,

As it does all wood.

11 And He has given it to be polished,

That it may be handled;

This sword is sharpened, and it is polished

To be given into the hand of the slayer.’

12 “Cry and wail, son of man;

For it will be against My people,

Against all the princes of Israel.

Terrors including the sword will be against My people;

Therefore strike your thigh.

13 “Because it is a testing,

And what if the sword despises even the scepter?

The scepter shall be no more,”

says the Lord God.

8 The Lord spoke his word to me, saying: 9 “Human, prophesy and say, ‘This is what the Lord says:

A sword, a sword,

made sharp and polished.

10 It is made sharp for the killing.

It is polished to flash like lightning.

“ ‘You are not happy about this horrible punishment by the sword. But my son Judah, you did not change when you were only beaten with a rod.

11 The sword should be polished.

It is meant to be held in the hand.

It is made sharp and polished,

ready for the hand of a killer.

12 Shout and yell, human,

because the sword is meant for my people,

for all the rulers of Israel.

They will be killed by the sword,

along with my people.

So beat your chest in sadness.

13 “ ‘The test will come. And Judah, who is hated by the armies of Babylon, will not last, says the Lord God.’

8 And the word of Jehovah came unto me, saying, 9 Son of man, prophesy, and say, Thus saith Jehovah: Say, A sword, a sword, it is sharpened, and also furbished; 10 it is sharpened that it may make a slaughter; it is furbished that it may be as lightning: shall we then make mirth? the rod of my son, it contemneth every tree. 11 And it is given to be furbished, that it may be handled: the sword, it is sharpened, yea, it is furbished, to give it into the hand of the slayer. 12 Cry and wail, son of man; for it is upon my people, it is upon all the princes of Israel: they are delivered over to the sword with my people; smite therefore upon thy thigh. 13 For there is a trial; and what if even the rod that contemneth shall be no more? saith the Lord Jehovah.

The sword, —it is sharpened, and it is furbished to give it into the hand of the slayer. 12 Cry and howl, son of man; for it shall be against my people, it shall be against all the princes of Israel: they are given up to the sword along with my people: smite therefore upon the thigh. 13 For the trial is made; and what if even the contemning sceptre shall be no more? saith the Lord Jehovah.

8 The Lord spoke his word to me. He said, 9 “Son of man, prophesy. Tell them, ‘This is what the Lord says: 

A sword, a sword is sharpened and polished, 

10 It’s sharpened to kill 

and polished to flash like lightning. 

How can we rejoice? 

My son has refused to be disciplined or punished. 

11 The sword has been handed over to be polished, 

to be placed in the hand. 

The sword is being sharpened and polished 

to be placed in the hands of killers. 

12 “ ‘Cry and mourn, son of man, 

because the sword will be used against my people 

and against all the princes of Israel. 

I will throw the princes and my people on the sword. 

So beat your breast, and grieve. 

13 Testing will surely come. 

What if you refuse to be disciplined again? 

Won’t you be tested? declares the Almighty Lord. 

8 The word of the Lord came to me: 9 “Son of man, prophesy: This is what the Lord says! You are to proclaim:

A sword! A sword is sharpened

and also polished.

10 It is sharpened for slaughter,

polished to flash like lightning!

Should we rejoice?

The scepter of My son,

the sword despises every tree.

11 The sword is given to be polished,

to be grasped in the hand.

It is sharpened, and it is polished,

to be put in the hand of the slayer.

12 Cry out and wail, son of man,

for it is against My people.

It is against all the princes of Israel!

They are given over to the sword with My people.

Therefore strike your thigh in grief.

13 Surely it will be a trial!

And what if the sword despises even the scepter?

The scepter will not continue.

This is the declaration of the Lord God.

8 And the word of the Lord came to me: 9 Mortal, prophesy and say: Thus says the Lord; Say:

A sword, a sword is sharpened,

it is also polished;

10 it is sharpened for slaughter,

honed to flash like lightning!

How can we make merry?

You have despised the rod,

and all discipline.

11 The sword is given to be polished,

to be grasped in the hand;

it is sharpened, the sword is polished,

to be placed in the slayer’s hand.

12 Cry and wail, O mortal,

for it is against my people;

it is against all Israel’s princes;

they are thrown to the sword,

together with my people.

Ah! Strike the thigh!

13 For consider: What! If you despise the rod, will it not happen? says the Lord God.

8 And the word of Yahweh came to me, saying, 9 “Son of man, prophesy, and you must say, ‘Thus says the Lord,’ say, ‘A sword, a sword is sharpened and is also polished. 10 It is sharpened to slaughter a slaughter, polished to flash like lightning! Or will we rejoice? A rod, my son, is despising every tree. 11 And he gives it to be polished, to be seized by the hand. It is sharpened—a sword—and it is polished to give it into the hand of the killer. 12 Cry and wail, son of man, for it is against my people; it is against all of the princes of Israel. They are thrown to the sword with my people; therefore strike your thigh. 13 For examine! And what if also the rod will not be despising?’ declares the Lord Yahweh.

8 A message came to me from the Lord. He said, 9 “Son of man, prophesy. Say, ‘The Lord says,

“ ‘ “A sword! A sword!

A sharp and shiny sword is coming from Babylonia!

10 It is sharpened to kill people.

It flashes like lightning.” ’ ”

The people say, “Should we take delight in the rod of the ruler of the Lord’s son Judah? The sword looks down on every stick like that.”

11 The Lord says,

“I have told Nebuchadnezzar to shine his sword.

It is in his hand.

It has been sharpened and shined.

It is ready for the killer’s hand.

12 Son of man, cry out and sob.

The sword is against my people.

It is against all of the princes of Israel.

It will kill them

along with the rest of my people.

So beat your chest in sorrow.

13 “You can be sure that testing will come. Why does the sword look down on the rod? Because the rod will not continue to rule,” announces the Lord and King.

8 Again the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

9 “Son of man, prophesy and say, ‘Thus says the Lord.’ Say,

‘A sword, a sword sharpened

And also polished!

10 ‘Sharpened to make a slaughter,

Polished to flash like lightning!’

Or shall we rejoice, the rod of My son despising every tree?

11 “It is given to be polished, that it may be handled; the sword is sharpened and polished, to give it into the hand of the slayer.

12 “Cry out and wail, son of man; for it is against My people, it is against all the officials of Israel. They are delivered over to the sword with My people, therefore strike your thigh.

13 “For there is a testing; and what if even the rod which despises will be no more?” declares the Lord God.
