Amos 6:11–14 — The New International Version (NIV)

11 For the Lord has given the command,

and he will smash the great house into pieces

and the small house into bits.

12 Do horses run on the rocky crags?

Does one plow the sea with oxen?

But you have turned justice into poison

and the fruit of righteousness into bitterness—

13 you who rejoice in the conquest of Lo Debar

and say, “Did we not take Karnaim by our own strength?”

14 For the Lord God Almighty declares,

“I will stir up a nation against you, Israel,

that will oppress you all the way

from Lebo Hamath to the valley of the Arabah.”

Amos 6:11–14 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

11 For, behold, the Lord commandeth,

And he will smite the great house with breaches,

And the little house with clefts.

12 Shall horses run upon the rock?

Will one plow there with oxen?

For ye have turned judgment into gall,

And the fruit of righteousness into hemlock:

13 Ye which rejoice in a thing of nought,

Which say, Have we not taken to us horns by our own strength?

14 But, behold, I will raise up against you a nation, O house of Israel, saith the Lord the God of hosts;

And they shall afflict you from the entering in of Hemath unto the river of the wilderness.

Amos 6:11–14 — New Living Translation (NLT)

11 When the Lord gives the command,

homes both great and small will be smashed to pieces.

12 Can horses gallop over boulders?

Can oxen be used to plow them?

But that’s how foolish you are when you turn justice into poison

and the sweet fruit of righteousness into bitterness.

13 And you brag about your conquest of Lo-debar.

You boast, “Didn’t we take Karnaim by our own strength?”

14 “O people of Israel, I am about to bring an enemy nation against you,”

says the Lord God of Heaven’s Armies.

“They will oppress you throughout your land—

from Lebo-hamath in the north

to the Arabah Valley in the south.”

Amos 6:11–14 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

11 For behold, the Lord gives a command:

He will break the great house into bits,

And the little house into pieces.

12 Do horses run on rocks?

Does one plow there with oxen?

Yet you have turned justice into gall,

And the fruit of righteousness into wormwood,

13 You who rejoice over Lo Debar,

Who say, “Have we not taken Karnaim for ourselves

By our own strength?”

14 “But, behold, I will raise up a nation against you,

O house of Israel,”

Says the Lord God of hosts;

“And they will afflict you from the entrance of Hamath

To the Valley of the Arabah.”

Amos 6:11–14 — New Century Version (NCV)

11 The Lord has given the command;

the large house will be broken into pieces,

and the small house into bits.

12 Horses do not run on rocks,

and people do not plow rocks with oxen.

But you have changed fairness into poison;

you have changed what is right into a bitter taste.

13 You are happy that the town of Lo Debar was captured,

and you say, “We have taken Karnaim by our own strength.”

14 The Lord God All-Powerful says,

“Israel, I will bring a nation against you

that will make your people suffer from Lebo Hamath in the north

to the valley south of the Dead Sea.”

Amos 6:11–14 — American Standard Version (ASV)

11 For, behold, Jehovah commandeth, and the great house shall be smitten with breaches, and the little house with clefts.

12 Shall horses run upon the rock? will one plow there with oxen? that ye have turned justice into gall, and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood; 13 ye that rejoice in a thing of nought, that say, Have we not taken to us horns by our own strength? 14 For, behold, I will raise up against you a nation, O house of Israel, saith Jehovah, the God of hosts; and they shall afflict you from the entrance of Hamath unto the brook of the Arabah.

Amos 6:11–14 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

11 For behold, Jehovah commandeth, and he will smite the great house with breaches, and the little house with clefts. 12 Shall horses run upon the rock? will men plough thereon with oxen? For ye have turned judgment into gall, and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood, 13 —ye that rejoice in a thing of nought, that say, Have we not taken to us power by our own strength? 14 For behold, O house of Israel, saith Jehovah the God of hosts, I will raise up against you a nation; and they shall afflict you from the entering in of Hamath unto the torrent of the Arabah.

Amos 6:11–14 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

11 The Lord is going to give the command

to level big houses and flatten little houses.

12 Do horses run on rocks?

Does a farmer plow the sea with oxen?

Yet, you have turned justice into something deadly

and what is righteous into poison.

13 How horrible it will be for those who rejoice over Lo Debar

and who say, “We were strong enough to capture Karnaim by ourselves.”

14 I am going to lead a nation to attack you, nation of Israel,

declares the Lord God of the Armies of the Nations.

They will oppress you from the border of Hamath to the valley of Arabah.

Amos 6:11–14 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

11 For the Lord commands:

The large house will be smashed to pieces,

and the small house to rubble.

12 Do horses gallop on the cliffs;

does anyone plow there with oxen?

Yet you have turned justice into poison

and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood —

13 you who rejoice over Lo-debar

and say, “Didn’t we capture Karnaim

for ourselves by our own strength?”

14 But look, I am raising up a nation

against you, house of Israel —

this is the declaration of the Lord,

the God of Hosts—

and they will oppress you

from the entrance of Hamath

to the Brook of the Arabah.

Amos 6:11–14 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

11 See, the Lord commands,

and the great house shall be shattered to bits,

and the little house to pieces.

12 Do horses run on rocks?

Does one plow the sea with oxen?

But you have turned justice into poison

and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood—

13 you who rejoice in Lo-debar,

who say, “Have we not by our own strength

taken Karnaim for ourselves?”

14 Indeed, I am raising up against you a nation,

O house of Israel, says the Lord, the God of hosts,

and they shall oppress you from Lebo-hamath

to the Wadi Arabah.

Amos 6:11–14 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

11 Look, Yahweh is going to command and the great house will be destroyed to bits and the little house to pieces. 12 Do horses run on rocks, or does one plow the sea with oxen? But you have turned justice into poison and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood! 13 You who rejoice over Lo-Debar, who say, “Have we not taken Karnaim for ourselves by our strength?” 14 Indeed, I am going to raise up against you a nation, O house of Israel, declares Yahweh, the God of hosts. And they shall oppress you from Lebo-hamath up to the wadi of the Arabah.

Amos 6:11–14 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

11 The Lord has already given an order.

He will smash large houses to pieces.

He will crush small houses to bits.

12 Horses don’t run on rocky ground.

People don’t plow there with oxen.

But you have turned fair treatment into poison.

You have turned the fruit of right living into bitterness.

13 You are happy because you captured the town of Lo Debar.

You say, “We were strong enough to take Karnaim too.”

14 But the Lord God rules over all. He announces, “People of Israel,

I will stir up a nation against you.

They will crush you from Lebo Hamath

all the way down to the Arabah Valley.”

Amos 6:11–14 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

11 For behold, the Lord is going to command that the great house be smashed to pieces and the small house to fragments.

12 Do horses run on rocks?

Or does one plow them with oxen?

Yet you have turned justice into poison

And the fruit of righteousness into wormwood,

13 You who rejoice in Lodebar,

And say, “Have we not by our own strength taken Karnaim for ourselves?”

14 “For behold, I am going to raise up a nation against you,

O house of Israel,” declares the Lord God of hosts,

“And they will afflict you from the entrance of Hamath

To the brook of the Arabah.”
