Psalm 88:1–9 — The New International Version (NIV)

Lord, you are the God who saves me;

day and night I cry out to you.

May my prayer come before you;

turn your ear to my cry.

I am overwhelmed with troubles

and my life draws near to death.

I am counted among those who go down to the pit;

I am like one without strength.

I am set apart with the dead,

like the slain who lie in the grave,

whom you remember no more,

who are cut off from your care.

You have put me in the lowest pit,

in the darkest depths.

Your wrath lies heavily on me;

you have overwhelmed me with all your waves.

You have taken from me my closest friends

and have made me repulsive to them.

I am confined and cannot escape;

my eyes are dim with grief.

I call to you, Lord, every day;

I spread out my hands to you.

Psalm 88:1–9 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

O Lord God of my salvation,

I have cried day and night before thee:

Let my prayer come before thee:

Incline thine ear unto my cry;

For my soul is full of troubles:

And my life draweth nigh unto the grave.

I am counted with them that go down into the pit:

I am as a man that hath no strength:

Free among the dead,

Like the slain that lie in the grave,

Whom thou rememberest no more:

And they are cut off from thy hand.

Thou hast laid me in the lowest pit,

In darkness, in the deeps.

Thy wrath lieth hard upon me,

And thou hast afflicted me with all thy waves. Selah.

Thou hast put away mine acquaintance far from me;

Thou hast made me an abomination unto them:

I am shut up, and I cannot come forth.

Mine eye mourneth by reason of affliction:

Lord, I have called daily upon thee,

I have stretched out my hands unto thee.

Psalm 88:1–9 — New Living Translation (NLT)

O Lord, God of my salvation,

I cry out to you by day.

I come to you at night.

Now hear my prayer;

listen to my cry.

For my life is full of troubles,

and death draws near.

I am as good as dead,

like a strong man with no strength left.

They have left me among the dead,

and I lie like a corpse in a grave.

I am forgotten,

cut off from your care.

You have thrown me into the lowest pit,

into the darkest depths.

Your anger weighs me down;

with wave after wave you have engulfed me.

Interlude

You have driven my friends away

by making me repulsive to them.

I am in a trap with no way of escape.

My eyes are blinded by my tears.

Each day I beg for your help, O Lord;

I lift my hands to you for mercy.

Psalm 88:1–9 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

O Lord, God of my salvation,

I have cried out day and night before You.

Let my prayer come before You;

Incline Your ear to my cry.

For my soul is full of troubles,

And my life draws near to the grave.

I am counted with those who go down to the pit;

I am like a man who has no strength,

Adrift among the dead,

Like the slain who lie in the grave,

Whom You remember no more,

And who are cut off from Your hand.

You have laid me in the lowest pit,

In darkness, in the depths.

Your wrath lies heavy upon me,

And You have afflicted me with all Your waves.

Selah

You have put away my acquaintances far from me;

You have made me an abomination to them;

I am shut up, and I cannot get out;

My eye wastes away because of affliction.

Lord, I have called daily upon You;

I have stretched out my hands to You.

Psalm 88:1–9 — New Century Version (NCV)

Lord, you are the God who saves me.

I cry out to you day and night.

Receive my prayer,

and listen to my cry.

My life is full of troubles,

and I am nearly dead.

They think I am on the way to my grave.

I am like a man with no strength.

I have been left as dead,

like a body lying in a grave

whom you don’t remember anymore,

cut off from your care.

You have brought me close to death;

I am almost in the dark place of the dead.

You have been very angry with me;

all your waves crush me.Selah

You have taken my friends away from me

and have made them hate me.

I am trapped and cannot escape.

My eyes are weak from crying.

Lord, I have prayed to you every day;

I have lifted my hands in prayer to you.

Psalm 88:1–9 — American Standard Version (ASV)

O Jehovah, the God of my salvation,

I have cried day and night before thee.

Let my prayer enter into thy presence;

Incline thine ear unto my cry.

For my soul is full of troubles,

And my life draweth nigh unto Sheol.

I am reckoned with them that go down into the pit;

I am as a man that hath no help,

Cast off among the dead,

Like the slain that lie in the grave,

Whom thou rememberest no more,

And they are cut off from thy hand.

Thou hast laid me in the lowest pit,

In dark places, in the deeps.

Thy wrath lieth hard upon me,

And thou hast afflicted me with all thy waves. Selah

Thou hast put mine acquaintance far from me;

Thou hast made me an abomination unto them:

I am shut up, and I cannot come forth.

Mine eye wasteth away by reason of affliction:

I have called daily upon thee, O Jehovah;

I have spread forth my hands unto thee.

Psalm 88:1–9 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

Jehovah, God of my salvation, I have cried by day and in the night before thee. Let my prayer come before thee; incline thine ear unto my cry. For my soul is full of troubles, and my life draweth nigh to Sheol. I am reckoned with them that go down into the pit; I am as a man that hath no strength: Prostrate among the dead, like the slain that lie in the grave; whom thou rememberest no more, and who are cut off from thy hand. Thou hast laid me in the lowest pit, in dark places, in the deeps. Thy fury lieth hard upon me, and thou hast afflicted me with all thy waves. Selah. Thou hast put my familiar friends far from me; thou hast made me an abomination unto them: I am shut up, and I cannot come forth. Mine eye consumeth by reason of affliction. Upon thee, Jehovah, have I called every day; I have stretched out my hands unto thee.

Psalm 88:1–9 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

O Lord God, my savior,

I cry out to you during the day and at night.

Let my prayer come into your presence.

Turn your ear to hear my cries.

My soul is filled with troubles,

and my life comes closer to the grave.

I am numbered with those who go into the pit.

I am like a man without any strength—

abandoned with the dead,

like those who have been killed and lie in graves,

like those whom you no longer remember,

who are cut off from your power.

You have put me in the bottom of the pit—in deep, dark places.

Your rage lies heavily on me.

You make all your waves pound on me.

Selah

You have taken my friends far away from me.

You made me disgusting to them.

I’m shut in, and I can’t get out.

My eyes grow weak because of my suffering.

All day long I call out to you, O Lord

I stretch out my hands to you ⸤in prayer⸥.

Psalm 88:1–9 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

Lord, God of my salvation,

I cry out before You day and night.

May my prayer reach Your presence;

listen to my cry.

For I have had enough troubles,

and my life is near Sheol.

I am counted among those going down to the Pit.

I am like a man without strength,

abandoned among the dead.

I am like the slain lying in the grave,

whom You no longer remember,

and who are cut off from Your care.

You have put me in the lowest part of the Pit,

in the darkest places, in the depths.

Your wrath weighs heavily on me;

You have overwhelmed me with all Your waves. Selah

You have distanced my friends from me;

You have made me repulsive to them.

I am shut in and cannot go out.

My eyes are worn out from crying.

Lord, I cry out to You all day long;

I spread out my hands to You.

Psalm 88:1–9 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

I am counted among those who go down to the Pit;

I am like those who have no help,

like those forsaken among the dead,

like the slain that lie in the grave,

like those whom you remember no more,

for they are cut off from your hand.

You have put me in the depths of the Pit,

in the regions dark and deep.

Your wrath lies heavy upon me,

and you overwhelm me with all your waves. Selah

You have caused my companions to shun me;

I am shut in so that I cannot escape;

my eye grows dim through sorrow.

Every day I call on you, O Lord;

I spread out my hands to you.

Psalm 88:1–9 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

O Yahweh, God of my salvation,

I cry out by day and through the night before you.

Let my prayer come before you;

incline your ear to my cry.

For my soul is full with troubles,

and my life approaches Sheol.

I am reckoned with those descending to the pit.

I am like a man without strength,

set free among the dead,

like the slain lying in the grave,

whom you no longer remember,

even those cut off from your hand.

You have set me in the pit below,

in dark places, in the depths.

Your wrath presses upon me,

and you afflict me with all your waves. Selah

You have removed my acquaintances far from me.

You have made me detestable to them.

I am confined and cannot go out.

My eye languishes from misery.

I call on you, O Yahweh, every day;

I spread out my hands to you.

Psalm 88:1–9 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

Lord, you are the God who saves me.

Day and night I cry out to you.

Please hear my prayer.

Pay attention to my cry for help.

I have so many troubles

I’m about to die.

People think my life is over.

I’m like someone who doesn’t have any strength.

People treat me as if I were dead.

I’m like those who have been killed and are now in the grave.

You don’t even remember them anymore.

They are cut off from your care.

It seems as if you have put me deep down in the grave,

that deep and dark place.

Your burning anger lies heavy on me.

All the waves of your anger have crashed over me. Selah

You have taken my closest friends away from me.

You have made me sickening to them.

I feel trapped. I can’t escape.

I’m crying so much I can’t see very well.

Lord, I call out to you every day.

I lift up my hands to you in prayer.

Psalm 88:1–9 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

O Lord, the God of my salvation,

I have cried out by day and in the night before You.

Let my prayer come before You;

Incline Your ear to my cry!

For my soul has had enough troubles,

And my life has drawn near to Sheol.

I am reckoned among those who go down to the pit;

I have become like a man without strength,

Forsaken among the dead,

Like the slain who lie in the grave,

Whom You remember no more,

And they are cut off from Your hand.

You have put me in the lowest pit,

In dark places, in the depths.

Your wrath has rested upon me,

And You have afflicted me with all Your waves.

Selah.

You have removed my acquaintances far from me;

You have made me an object of loathing to them;

I am shut up and cannot go out.

My eye has wasted away because of affliction;

I have called upon You every day, O Lord;

I have spread out my hands to You.
