11 On the day you stood aloof

while strangers carried off his wealth

and foreigners entered his gates

and cast lots for Jerusalem,

you were like one of them.

12 You should not gloat over your brother

in the day of his misfortune,

nor rejoice over the people of Judah

in the day of their destruction,

nor boast so much

in the day of their trouble.

11 In the day that thou stoodest on the other side,

In the day that the strangers carried away captive his forces,

And foreigners entered into his gates,

And cast lots upon Jerusalem,

Even thou wast as one of them.

12 But thou shouldest not have looked on the day of thy brother in the day that he became a stranger;

Neither shouldest thou have rejoiced over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction;

Neither shouldest thou have spoken proudly in the day of distress.

11 When they were invaded,

you stood aloof, refusing to help them.

Foreign invaders carried off their wealth

and cast lots to divide up Jerusalem,

but you acted like one of Israel’s enemies.

12 “You should not have gloated

when they exiled your relatives to distant lands.

You should not have rejoiced

when the people of Judah suffered such misfortune.

You should not have spoken arrogantly

in that terrible time of trouble.

11 In the day that you stood on the other side—

In the day that strangers carried captive his forces,

When foreigners entered his gates

And cast lots for Jerusalem—

Even you were as one of them.

12 “But you should not have gazed on the day of your brother

In the day of his captivity;

Nor should you have rejoiced over the children of Judah

In the day of their destruction;

Nor should you have spoken proudly

In the day of distress.

11 You stood aside without helping

while strangers carried Israel’s treasures away.

When foreigners entered Israel’s city gate

and threw lots to decide what part of Jerusalem they would take,

you were like one of them.

12 “Edom, do not laugh at your brother Israel in his time of trouble

or be happy about the people of Judah when they are destroyed.

Do not brag when cruel things are done to them.

11 In the day that thou stoodest on the other side, in the day that strangers carried away his substance, and foreigners entered into his gates, and cast lots upon Jerusalem, even thou wast as one of them. 12 But look not thou on the day of thy brother in the day of his disaster, and rejoice not over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction; neither speak proudly in the day of distress.

11 In the day that thou stoodest on the other side, in the day that strangers carried away captive his substance, and foreigners entered into his gates, and cast lots upon Jerusalem, even thou wast as one of them. 12 But thou shouldest not have looked on the day of thy brother in the day of his disaster; neither shouldest thou have rejoiced over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction; nor have opened wide thy mouth in the day of distress.

11 While you stood there doing nothing, 

strangers carried off Jacob’s wealth. 

Foreigners entered his gates and threw dice for Jerusalem. 

You acted like one of them. 

12 Don’t gloat over your relative’s misfortune 

or be happy when the people of Judah are destroyed. 

Don’t brag so much when they’re in distress. 

11 On the day you stood aloof,

you were just like one of them.

in the day of his calamity;

do not rejoice over the people of Judah

in the day of their destruction;

do not boastfully mock

in the day of distress.

on the day that strangers carried off his wealth,

and foreigners entered his gates

and cast lots for Jerusalem,

you too were like one of them.

12 But you should not have gloated over your brother

on the day of his misfortune;

you should not have rejoiced over the people of Judah

on the day of their ruin;

you should not have boasted

on the day of distress.

11 On the day you stood nearby, on the day strangers took his wealth, and foreigners entered his gates and cast lots over Jerusalem, you were also like one of them. 12 But you should not have gloated over your brother’s day, on the day of his misfortune, and you should not have rejoiced over the people of Judah on the day of their perishing, and you should not have opened your mouth wide on the day of distress.

11 Strangers entered the gates of Jerusalem.

They cast lots to see what each one would get.

They carried off its wealth.

When that happened, you just stood there and did nothing.

You were like one of them.

12 That was a time of trouble for your brothers.

So you should not have looked down on them.

The people of Judah were destroyed.

So you should not have been happy about it.

You should not have laughed at them so much

when they were in trouble.

11 “On the day that you stood aloof,

On the day that strangers carried off his wealth,

And foreigners entered his gate

And cast lots for Jerusalem—

You too were as one of them.

12 “Do not gloat over your brother’s day,

The day of his misfortune.

And do not rejoice over the sons of Judah

In the day of their destruction;

Yes, do not boast

In the day of their distress.
