Obadiah 5–7

5 “If thieves came to you,

if robbers in the night—

oh, what a disaster awaits you!—

would they not steal only as much as they wanted?

If grape pickers came to you,

would they not leave a few grapes?

6 But how Esau will be ransacked,

his hidden treasures pillaged!

7 All your allies will force you to the border;

your friends will deceive and overpower you;

those who eat your bread will set a trap for you,

but you will not detect it.

5 If thieves came to thee, if robbers by night, (how art thou cut off!)

Would they not have stolen till they had enough?

If the grapegatherers came to thee,

Would they not leave some grapes?

6 How are the things of Esau searched out!

How are his hidden things sought up!

7 All the men of thy confederacy have brought thee even to the border:

The men that were at peace with thee have deceived thee, and prevailed against thee;

They that eat thy bread have laid a wound under thee:

There is none understanding in him.

5 “If thieves came at night and robbed you

(what a disaster awaits you!),

they would not take everything.

Those who harvest grapes

always leave a few for the poor.

But your enemies will wipe you out completely!

6 Every nook and cranny of Edom

will be searched and looted.

Every treasure will be found and taken.

7 “All your allies will turn against you.

They will help to chase you from your land.

They will promise you peace

while plotting to deceive and destroy you.

Your trusted friends will set traps for you,

and you won’t even know about it.

5 “If thieves had come to you,

If robbers by night—

Oh, how you will be cut off!—

Would they not have stolen till they had enough?

If grape-gatherers had come to you,

Would they not have left some gleanings?

6 “Oh, how Esau shall be searched out!

How his hidden treasures shall be sought after!

7 All the men in your confederacy

Shall force you to the border;

The men at peace with you

Shall deceive you and prevail against you.

Those who eat your bread shall lay a trap for you.

No one is aware of it.

5 “You will really be ruined!

If thieves came to you,

if robbers came by night,

they would steal only enough for themselves.

If workers came and picked the grapes from your vines,

they would leave a few behind.

6 But you, Edom, will really lose everything!

People will find all your hidden treasures!

7 All the people who are your friends

will force you out of the land.

The people who are at peace with you

will trick you and defeat you.

Those who eat your bread with you now

are planning a trap for you,

and you will not notice it.”

If grape-gatherers had come to thee, would they not have left some gleanings? 6 How is Esau searched! his hidden things sought out! 7 All the men of thy confederacy have pushed thee to the border; the men that were at peace with thee have deceived thee, they have prevailed against thee; they that eat thy bread have laid a snare under thee. There is no understanding in him.

5 “If thieves or looters come to you during the night, 

won’t they steal only until they’ve had enough? 

You will be ruined! 

If people come to pick your grapes, 

won’t they leave a few grapes behind? 

6 But you, Esau,will lose everything. 

Even your hidden treasures will be looted. 

7 All your allies will force you to leave your land. 

The people who are at peace with you will deceive you. 

Those who eat food with you will set traps for you, 

and you won’t even know about it.

if marauders by night—

how ravaged you would be!—

wouldn’t they steal only what they wanted?

If grape pickers came to you,

wouldn’t they leave some grapes?

6 How Esau will be pillaged,

his hidden treasures searched out!

7 Everyone who has a treaty with you

will drive you to the border;

everyone at peace with you

will deceive and conquer you.

Those who eat your bread

will set a trap for you.

He will be unaware of it.

5 If thieves came to you,

if plunderers by night

—how you have been destroyed!—

would they not steal only what they wanted?

If grape gatherers came to you,

would they not leave gleanings?

6 How Esau has been pillaged,

his treasures searched out!

7 All your allies have deceived you;

they have driven you to the border;

your confederates have prevailed against you;

those who ate your food have set a trap for you—

there is no understanding.

If grape gatherers came to you, would they not leave gleanings? 6 How Esau has been pillaged; his treasures have been ransacked! 7 All of your allies have driven you up to the boundary; your confederates have deceived you and have prevailed against you. Those who eat your bread have set an ambush for you, there is no understanding of it.

5 “Edom, suppose robbers came to you at night.

They would steal only as much as they wanted.

Suppose grape pickers came to harvest your vines.

They would still leave a few grapes.

But you are facing horrible trouble!

6 People of Esau, everything will be taken away from you.

Your hidden treasures will be stolen.

7 All those who are helping you

will force you to leave your country.

Your friends will trick you and overpower you.

Those who eat bread with you

will set a trap for you.

But you will not see it.”
