1 The Lord spoke to Moses ain the wilderness of Sinai, bin the tent of meeting, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying, 2 c“Take a census of all the congregation of the people of Israel, by clans, dby fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, every male, head by head. 3 eFrom twenty years old and upward, all in Israel who are able to go to war, you and Aaron shall list them, fcompany by company. 4 And there shall be with you a man from each tribe, each man being the head of the house of his fathers.

Numbers 1:1–4 — The New International Version (NIV)
1 The Lord spoke to Moses in the tent of meeting in the Desert of Sinai on the first day of the second month of the second year after the Israelites came out of Egypt. He said: 2 “Take a census of the whole Israelite community by their clans and families, listing every man by name, one by one. 3 You and Aaron are to count according to their divisions all the men in Israel who are twenty years old or more and able to serve in the army. 4 One man from each tribe, each of them the head of his family, is to help you.
