6 The river gates are thrown open

and the palace collapses.

7 It is decreed that Nineveh

be exiled and carried away.

Her female slaves moan like doves

and beat on their breasts.

8 Nineveh is like a pool

whose water is draining away.

“Stop! Stop!” they cry,

but no one turns back.

9 Plunder the silver!

Plunder the gold!

The supply is endless,

the wealth from all its treasures!

6 The gates of the rivers shall be opened,

And the palace shall be dissolved.

7 And Huzzab shall be led away captive, she shall be brought up,

And her maids shall lead her as with the voice of doves,

Tabering upon their breasts.

8 But Nineveh is of old like a pool of water:

Yet they shall flee away.

Stand, stand, shall they cry; but none shall look back.

9 Take ye the spoil of silver, take the spoil of gold:

For there is none end of the store and glory out of all the pleasant furniture.

6 The river gates have been torn open!

The palace is about to collapse!

7 Nineveh’s exile has been decreed,

and all the servant girls mourn its capture.

They moan like doves

and beat their breasts in sorrow.

8 Nineveh is like a leaking water reservoir!

The people are slipping away.

“Stop, stop!” someone shouts,

but no one even looks back.

9 Loot the silver!

Plunder the gold!

There’s no end to Nineveh’s treasures—

its vast, uncounted wealth.

6 The gates of the rivers are opened,

And the palace is dissolved.

7 It is decreed:

She shall be led away captive,

She shall be brought up;

And her maidservants shall lead her as with the voice of doves,

Beating their breasts.

8 Though Nineveh of old was like a pool of water,

Now they flee away.

“Halt! Halt!” they cry;

But no one turns back.

9 Take spoil of silver!

Take spoil of gold!

There is no end of treasure,

Or wealth of every desirable prize.

8 But Nineveh hath been from of old like a pool of water: yet they flee away. Stand, stand, they cry; but none looketh back. 9 Take ye the spoil of silver, take the spoil of gold; for there is no end of the store, the glory of all goodly furniture.

6 The gates of the rivers are opened, and the palace melteth away. 7 And it is decreed: she shall be uncovered, she shall be led away, and her maids shall moan as with the voice of doves, drumming upon their breasts. 8 Nineveh hath been like a pool of water, since the day she existed, yet they flee away. …Stand! Stand! But none looketh back. 9 Plunder the silver, plunder the gold; for there is no end of the splendid store of all precious vessels.

“It will be stripped. 

It will be carried away. 

Its young women will be mourning like doves 

as they beat their breasts.” 

8 Nineveh was like a pool of water from its first day on. 

But now its people are fleeing. 

“Stop! Stop!” 

But no one turns around. 

9 Steal the silver! Steal the gold! 

There is no end to what is stored here— 

everything a person could ever want.

like the sound of doves,

but they are fleeing.

an abundance of every precious thing.

an abundance of everything one could want!

6 They open the gates that hold back

the waters of the river.

And the palace falls down.

7 The attackers order that the city’s people

be taken away as prisoners.

The female slaves cry like sad doves.

They beat their chests.

8 Nineveh is like a pool.

Its water is draining away.

“Stop running away!” someone cries out.

But no one turns back.

9 “Steal the silver!” the attackers shout.

“Grab the gold!”

The supply is endless.

There is plenty of wealth

among all of the city’s treasures.

7 It is fixed:

She is stripped, she is carried away,

And her handmaids are moaning like the sound of doves,

Beating on their breasts.

Now they are fleeing;

“Stop, stop,”

For there is no limit to the treasure—

Wealth from every kind of desirable object.
