Lamentations 5:1–10 — The New International Version (NIV)
1 Remember, Lord, what has happened to us;
look, and see our disgrace.
2 Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers,
our homes to foreigners.
3 We have become fatherless,
our mothers are widows.
4 We must buy the water we drink;
our wood can be had only at a price.
5 Those who pursue us are at our heels;
we are weary and find no rest.
6 We submitted to Egypt and Assyria
to get enough bread.
7 Our ancestors sinned and are no more,
and we bear their punishment.
8 Slaves rule over us,
and there is no one to free us from their hands.
9 We get our bread at the risk of our lives
because of the sword in the desert.
10 Our skin is hot as an oven,
feverish from hunger.
Lamentations 5:1–10 — King James Version (KJV 1900)
1 Remember, O Lord, what is come upon us: Consider, and behold our reproach. 2 Our inheritance is turned to strangers, Our houses to aliens. 3 We are orphans and fatherless, Our mothers are as widows. 4 We have drunken our water for money; Our wood is sold unto us. 5 Our necks are under persecution: We labour, and have no rest. 6 We have given the hand to the Egyptians, And to the Assyrians, to be satisfied with bread. 7 Our fathers have sinned, and are not; And we have borne their iniquities. 8 Servants have ruled over us: There is none that doth deliver us out of their hand. 9 We gat our bread with the peril of our lives Because of the sword of the wilderness. 10 Our skin was black like an oven Because of the terrible famine.
Lamentations 5:1–10 — New Living Translation (NLT)
1 Lord, remember what has happened to us.
See how we have been disgraced!
2 Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers,
our homes to foreigners.
3 We are orphaned and fatherless.
Our mothers are widowed.
4 We have to pay for water to drink,
and even firewood is expensive.
5 Those who pursue us are at our heels;
we are exhausted but are given no rest.
6 We submitted to Egypt and Assyria
to get enough food to survive.
7 Our ancestors sinned, but they have died—
and we are suffering the punishment they deserved!
8 Slaves have now become our masters;
there is no one left to rescue us.
9 We hunt for food at the risk of our lives,
for violence rules the countryside.
10 The famine has blackened our skin
as though baked in an oven.
Lamentations 5:1–10 — The New King James Version (NKJV)
1 Remember, O Lord, what has come upon us;
Look, and behold our reproach!
2 Our inheritance has been turned over to aliens,
And our houses to foreigners.
3 We have become orphans and waifs,
Our mothers are like widows.
4 We pay for the water we drink,
And our wood comes at a price.
5 They pursue at our heels;
We labor and have no rest.
6 We have given our hand to the Egyptians
And the Assyrians, to be satisfied with bread.
7 Our fathers sinned and are no more,
But we bear their iniquities.
8 Servants rule over us;
There is none to deliver us from their hand.
9 We get our bread at the risk of our lives,
Because of the sword in the wilderness.
10 Our skin is hot as an oven,
Because of the fever of famine.

We are tired and find no rest.
6 We made an agreement with Egypt
and with Assyria to get enough food.
7 Our ancestors sinned against you, but they are gone;
now we suffer because of their sins.
8 Slaves have become our rulers,
and no one can save us from them.

we face death in the desert.

we burn with starvation.

4 We have to pay to drink our own water.
We have to pay to chop our own wood.
5 ⸤Our enemies⸥ are breathing down our necks.
We are worn out ⸤and⸥ not permitted to rest.
6 We had to beg Egypt and Assyria for food.
7 Our ancestors sinned.
Now they are gone,
⸤but⸥ we have to take the punishment for their wickedness.
8 Slaves rule us.
There is no one to rescue us from them.
9 To get our food, we have to risk our lives
in the heatof the desert.
10 Our skin is as hot as an oven from the burning heat of starvation.

3 We have become orphans, fatherless,
our mothers are like widows.
4 We pay for water with money,
our wood comes to us at a price.

we are weary, there is no rest for us.
6 We have made a deal with Egypt and Assyria
to be satisfied with food.
7 Our fathers have sinned, they are no more;
we bear their iniquity.

Lamentations 5:1–10 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)
1 Lord, think about what has happened to us.
Look at the shame our enemies have brought on us.
2 The land you gave us has been turned over to outsiders.
Our homes have been given to strangers.
3 Our fathers have been killed.
Our mothers don’t have husbands.
4 We have to buy the water we drink.
We have to pay for the wood we use.
5 Those who chase us are right behind us.
We’re tired. We can’t get any rest.
6 We put ourselves under the control of Egypt and Assyria
just to get enough bread.
7 Our people before us sinned.
And they are now dead.
We are being punished because of their sins.
8 Slaves rule over us.
No one can set us free
from their powerful hands.
9 We put our lives in danger just to get some bread to eat.
Robbers in the desert might kill us with their swords.
10 Our skin is as hot as an oven.
We are so hungry we’re burning up with fever.
