Job 25:1–6
Bildad Speaks: Man Cannot Be Righteous
25 Then oBildad the Shuhite answered and said:
2 “Dominion and fear are with God;1
he makes peace in his high heaven.
3 Is there any number to his parmies?
Upon whom does his qlight not arise?
4 How then can man be rin the right before God?
How can he who is sborn of woman be tpure?
5 Behold, even the moon is not bright,
and the stars are not pure in his eyes;
6 uhow much less man, who is va maggot,
and wthe son of man, who is a worm!”
Job 25:1–6 — The New International Version (NIV)
1 Then Bildad the Shuhite replied:
2 “Dominion and awe belong to God;
he establishes order in the heights of heaven.
3 Can his forces be numbered?
On whom does his light not rise?
4 How then can a mortal be righteous before God?
How can one born of woman be pure?
5 If even the moon is not bright
and the stars are not pure in his eyes,
6 how much less a mortal, who is but a maggot—
a human being, who is only a worm!”
Job 25:1–6 — King James Version (KJV 1900)
1 Then answered Bildad the Shuhite, and said,
2 Dominion and fear are with him,
He maketh peace in his high places.
3 Is there any number of his armies?
And upon whom doth not his light arise?
4 How then can man be justified with God?
Or how can he be clean that is born of a woman?
5 Behold even to the moon, and it shineth not;
Yea, the stars are not pure in his sight.
6 How much less man, that is a worm?
And the son of man, which is a worm?
Job 25:1–6 — New Living Translation (NLT)
1 Then Bildad the Shuhite replied:
2 “God is powerful and dreadful.
He enforces peace in the heavens.
3 Who is able to count his heavenly army?
Doesn’t his light shine on all the earth?
4 How can a mortal be innocent before God?
Can anyone born of a woman be pure?
5 God is more glorious than the moon;
he shines brighter than the stars.
6 In comparison, people are maggots;
we mortals are mere worms.”
Job 25:1–6 — The New King James Version (NKJV)
1 Then Bildad the Shuhite answered and said:
2 “Dominion and fear belong to Him;
He makes peace in His high places.
3 Is there any number to His armies?
Upon whom does His light not rise?
4 How then can man be righteous before God?
Or how can he be pure who is born of a woman?
5 If even the moon does not shine,
And the stars are not pure in His sight,
6 How much less man, who is a maggot,
And a son of man, who is a worm?”
Job 25:1–6 — New Century Version (NCV)
1 Then Bildad the Shuhite answered:
2 “God rules and he must be honored;
he set up order in his high heaven.
3 No one can count God’s armies.
His light shines on all people.
4 So no one can be good in the presence of God,
and no one born to a woman can be pure.
5 Even the moon is not bright
and the stars are not pure in his eyes.
6 People are much less! They are like insects.
They are only worms!”
Job 25:1–6 — American Standard Version (ASV)
1 Then answered Bildad the Shuhite, and said,
2 Dominion and fear are with him;
He maketh peace in his high places.
3 Is there any number of his armies?
And upon whom doth not his light arise?
4 How then can man be just with God?
Or how can he be clean that is born of a woman?
5 Behold, even the moon hath no brightness,
And the stars are not pure in his sight:
6 How much less man, that is a worm!
And the son of man, that is a worm!
Job 25:1–6 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)
1 And Bildad the Shuhite answered and said, 2 Dominion and fear are with him; he maketh peace in his high places. 3 Is there any number of his troops? and upon whom doth not his light arise? 4 And how should man be just with •God? Or how should he be clean that is born of a woman? 5 Lo, even the moon is not bright; and the stars are not pure in his sight: 6 How much less man, a worm, and the son of man, a worm!
Job 25:1–6 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)
1 Then Bildad from Shuah replied ⸤to Job⸥,
2 “Authority and terror belong to God.
He establishes peace in his high places.
3 Is there any ⸤limit to the⸥ number of his troops?
Is there anyone on whom his light does not rise?
4 How can a person be righteous to God?
How can anyone born of a woman be pure?
5 Even the moon isn’t bright,
and the stars aren’t pure in his sight.
6 How much less pure is a mortal—who is only a maggot—
a descendant of Adam—who is only a worm!”
Job 25:1–6 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)
1 Then Bildad the Shuhite replied:
2 Dominion and dread belong to Him,
the One who establishes harmony in the heavens.
3 Can His troops be numbered?
Does His light not shine on everyone?
4 How can a person be justified before God?
How can one born of woman be pure?
5 If even the moon does not shine
and the stars are not pure in His sight,
6 how much less man, who is a maggot,
and the son of man, who is a worm!
Job 25:1–6 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

he makes peace in his high heaven.

Upon whom does his light not arise?
4 How then can a mortal be righteous before God?
How can one born of woman be pure?
5 If even the moon is not bright
and the stars are not pure in his sight,
6 how much less a mortal, who is a maggot,
and a human being, who is a worm!”
Job 25:1–6 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)
1 Then Bildad the Shuhite answered and said,
2 “Domination and dread are with him
who makes peace in his high heavens.
3 Is there a number to his troops?
And upon whom does his light not rise?
4 “Indeed, how can a human being be righteous before God?
And how will he who is born of a woman be pure?
5 Look, even the moon is not bright,
and the stars are not pure in his sight.
6 How much less for a human being who is a maggot,
and a human who is a worm?”
Job 25:1–6 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)
1 Then Bildad the Shuhite replied,
2 “God is King. He should be feared.
He establishes peace in the highest parts of heaven.
3 Can anyone count his troops?
Is there anyone his light doesn’t shine on?
4 How can human beings be right with God?
How can mere people really be pure?
5 Even the moon isn’t bright
and the stars aren’t pure in God’s eyes.
6 So how about human beings? They are like maggots.
How about mere people? They are like worms.”
Job 25:1–6 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

6 How much less man, that maggot,
And the son of man, that worm!”
