Job 3:23–26 — The New International Version (NIV)
23 Why is life given to a man
whose way is hidden,
whom God has hedged in?
24 For sighing has become my daily food;
my groans pour out like water.
25 What I feared has come upon me;
what I dreaded has happened to me.
26 I have no peace, no quietness;
I have no rest, but only turmoil.”
Job 3:23–26 — King James Version (KJV 1900)
23 Why is light given to a man whose way is hid,
And whom God hath hedged in?
24 For my sighing cometh before I eat,
And my roarings are poured out like the waters.
25 For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me,
And that which I was afraid of is come unto me.
26 I was not in safety, neither had I rest, neither was I quiet;
Yet trouble came.
Job 3:23–26 — New Living Translation (NLT)
23 Why is life given to those with no future,
those God has surrounded with difficulties?
24 I cannot eat for sighing;
my groans pour out like water.
25 What I always feared has happened to me.
What I dreaded has come true.
26 I have no peace, no quietness.
I have no rest; only trouble comes.”
Job 3:23–26 — The New King James Version (NKJV)
23 Why is light given to a man whose way is hidden,
And whom God has hedged in?
24 For my sighing comes before I eat,
And my groanings pour out like water.
25 For the thing I greatly feared has come upon me,
And what I dreaded has happened to me.
26 I am not at ease, nor am I quiet;
I have no rest, for trouble comes.”
Job 3:23–26 — New Century Version (NCV)
23 They cannot see where they are going.
God has hidden the road ahead.
24 I make sad sounds as I eat;
my groans pour out like water.
25 Everything I feared and dreaded
has happened to me.
26 I have no peace or quietness.
I have no rest, only trouble.”
Job 3:23–26 — American Standard Version (ASV)
23 Why is light given to a man whose way is hid,
And whom God hath hedged in?
24 For my sighing cometh before I eat,
And my groanings are poured out like water.
25 For the thing which I fear cometh upon me,
And that which I am afraid of cometh unto me.
26 I am not at ease, neither am I quiet, neither have I rest;
But trouble cometh.
Job 3:23–26 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)
23 To the man whose way is hidden, and whom †God hath hedged in? 24 For my sighing cometh before my bread, and my groanings are poured out like the waters. 25 For I feared a fear, and it hath come upon me, and that which I dreaded hath come to me. 26 I was not in safety, neither had I quietness, neither was I at rest, and trouble came.
Job 3:23–26 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)
23 Why give light to those whose paths have been hidden,
to those whom God has fenced in?
24 “When my food is in front of me, I sigh.
I pour out my groaning like water.
25 What I fear most overtakes me.
What I dread happens to me.
26 I have no peace!
I have no quiet!
I have no rest!
And trouble keeps coming!”
Job 3:23–26 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)
23 Why is life given to a man whose path is hidden,
whom God has hedged in?
24 I sigh when food is put before me,
and my groans pour out like water.
25 For the thing I feared has overtaken me,
and what I dreaded has happened to me.
26 I cannot relax or be still;
I have no rest, for trouble comes.
Job 3:23–26 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)
23 Why is light given to one who cannot see the way,
whom God has fenced in?
24 For my sighing comes like my bread,
and my groanings are poured out like water.
25 Truly the thing that I fear comes upon me,
and what I dread befalls me.
26 I am not at ease, nor am I quiet;
I have no rest; but trouble comes.”
Job 3:23–26 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)
23 Why does he give light to a man whose way is hidden,
and God has fenced him in all around?
24 For my sighing comes before my bread,
and my groanings gush forth like water
25 because the dread that I feel has come upon me,
and what I feared befalls me.
26 I am not at ease, and I am not at peace,
and I do not have rest, thus turmoil has come.”
Job 3:23–26 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)
23 Why is life given to a man like me?
God hasn’t told me what will happen to me.
He has surrounded me with nothing but trouble.
24 I sigh instead of eating food.
Groans pour out of me like water.
25 What I was afraid of has come on me.
What I worried about has happened to me.
26 I don’t have any peace and quiet.
I can’t find any rest. All I have is trouble.”
Job 3:23–26 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

And what I dread befalls me.
26 “I am not at ease, nor am I quiet,
And I am not at rest, but turmoil comes.”
