Job 13:26–14:6 — The New International Version (NIV)

26 For you write down bitter things against me

and make me reap the sins of my youth.

27 You fasten my feet in shackles;

you keep close watch on all my paths

by putting marks on the soles of my feet.

28 “So man wastes away like something rotten,

like a garment eaten by moths.

“Mortals, born of woman,

are of few days and full of trouble.

They spring up like flowers and wither away;

like fleeting shadows, they do not endure.

Do you fix your eye on them?

Will you bring them before you for judgment?

Who can bring what is pure from the impure?

No one!

A person’s days are determined;

you have decreed the number of his months

and have set limits he cannot exceed.

So look away from him and let him alone,

till he has put in his time like a hired laborer.

Job 13:26–14:6 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

26 For thou writest bitter things against me,

And makest me to possess the iniquities of my youth.

27 Thou puttest my feet also in the stocks,

And lookest narrowly unto all my paths;

Thou settest a print upon the heels of my feet.

28 And he, as a rotten thing, consumeth,

As a garment that is moth eaten.

Man that is born of a woman

Is of few days, and full of trouble.

He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down:

He fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.

And dost thou open thine eyes upon such an one,

And bringest me into judgment with thee?

Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean?

Not one.

Seeing his days are determined,

The number of his months are with thee,

Thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass;

Turn from him, that he may rest,

Till he shall accomplish, as an hireling, his day.

Job 13:26–14:6 — New Living Translation (NLT)

26 “You write bitter accusations against me

and bring up all the sins of my youth.

27 You put my feet in stocks.

You examine all my paths.

You trace all my footprints.

28 I waste away like rotting wood,

like a moth-eaten coat.

“How frail is humanity!

How short is life, how full of trouble!

We blossom like a flower and then wither.

Like a passing shadow, we quickly disappear.

Must you keep an eye on such a frail creature

and demand an accounting from me?

Who can bring purity out of an impure person?

No one!

You have decided the length of our lives.

You know how many months we will live,

and we are not given a minute longer.

So leave us alone and let us rest!

We are like hired hands, so let us finish our work in peace.

Job 13:26–14:6 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

26 For You write bitter things against me,

And make me inherit the iniquities of my youth.

27 You put my feet in the stocks,

And watch closely all my paths.

You set a limit for the soles of my feet.

28 Man decays like a rotten thing,

Like a garment that is moth-eaten.

“Man who is born of woman

Is of few days and full of trouble.

He comes forth like a flower and fades away;

He flees like a shadow and does not continue.

And do You open Your eyes on such a one,

And bring me to judgment with Yourself?

Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean?

No one!

Since his days are determined,

The number of his months is with You;

You have appointed his limits, so that he cannot pass.

Look away from him that he may rest,

Till like a hired man he finishes his day.

Job 13:26–14:6 — New Century Version (NCV)

26 You write down cruel things against me

and make me suffer for my boyhood sins.

27 You put my feet in chains

and keep close watch wherever I go.

You even mark the soles of my feet.

28 “Everyone wears out like something rotten,

like clothing eaten by moths.

“All of us born to women

live only a few days and have lots of trouble.

We grow up like flowers and then dry up and die.

We are like a passing shadow that does not last.

Lord, do you need to watch me like this?

Must you bring me before you to be judged?

No one can bring something clean from something dirty.

Our time is limited.

You have given us only so many months to live

and have set limits we cannot go beyond.

So look away from us and leave us alone

until we put in our time like a laborer.

Job 13:26–14:6 — American Standard Version (ASV)

26 For thou writest bitter things against me,

And makest me to inherit the iniquities of my youth:

27 Thou puttest my feet also in the stocks,

And markest all my paths;

Thou settest a bound to the soles of my feet:

28 Though I am like a rotten thing that consumeth,

Like a garment that is moth-eaten.

Man, that is born of a woman,

Is of few days, and full of trouble.

He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down:

He fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.

And dost thou open thine eyes upon such a one,

And bringest me into judgment with thee?

Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one.

Seeing his days are determined,

The number of his months is with thee,

And thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass;

Look away from him, that he may rest,

Till he shall accomplish, as a hireling, his day.

Job 13:26–14:6 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

26 For thou writest bitter things against me, and makest me to possess the iniquities of my youth; 27 And thou puttest my feet in the stocks, and markest all my paths; thou settest a bound about the soles of my feet; — 28 One who, as a rotten thing consumeth, as a garment that the moth eateth.

Man, born of woman, is of few days, and full of trouble. He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down; and he fleeth as a shadow, and continueth not. Yet dost thou open thine eyes upon such a one, and bringest me into judgment with thee? Who can bring a clean man out of the unclean? Not one! If his days are determined, if the number of his months is with thee, and thou hast appointed his bounds which he must not pass, Look away from him; and let him rest, till he accomplish, as a hireling, his day.

Job 13:26–14:6 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

26 You write down bitter accusations against me.

You make me suffer for the sins of my youth.

27 You put my feet in shackles.

You follow my trail by engraving marks on the soles of my feet.

28 I am like worn-out wineskins,

like moth-eaten clothes.

“A person who is born of a woman is short-lived

and is full of trouble.

He comes up like a flower; then he withers.

He is like a fleeting shadow; he doesn’t stay long.

You observe this

and call me to account to you.

“If only an unclean person could become clean!

It’s not possible.

If the number of his days

and the number of his months are determined by you,

and you set his limit,

then he cannot go past it.

Look away from him, and he will cease to be.

Meanwhile, he loves life as a laborer loves work.

Job 13:26–14:6 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

26 For You record bitter accusations against me

and make me inherit the iniquities of my youth.

27 You put my feet in the stocks

and stand watch over all my paths,

setting a limit for the soles of my feet.

28 Man wears out like something rotten,

like a moth-eaten garment.

Man born of woman

is short of days and full of trouble.

He blossoms like a flower, then withers;

he flees like a shadow and does not last.

Do You really take notice of one like this?

Will You bring me into judgment against You?

Who can produce something pure from what is impure?

No one!

Since man’s days are determined

and the number of his months depends on You,

and since You have set limits he cannot pass,

look away from him and let him rest

so that he can enjoy his day like a hired hand.

Job 13:26–14:6 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

26 For you write bitter things against me,

and make me reap the iniquities of my youth.

27 You put my feet in the stocks,

and watch all my paths;

you set a bound to the soles of my feet.

28 One wastes away like a rotten thing,

like a garment that is moth-eaten.

“A mortal, born of woman, few of days and full of trouble,

comes up like a flower and withers,

flees like a shadow and does not last.

Do you fix your eyes on such a one?

Do you bring me into judgment with you?

Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean?

No one can.

Since their days are determined,

and the number of their months is known to you,

and you have appointed the bounds that they cannot pass,

look away from them, and desist,

that they may enjoy, like laborers, their days.

Job 13:26–14:6 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

26 “Indeed, you write bitter things against me,

and you make me reap the iniquities of my childhood.

27 And you put my feet in the block,

and you watch all my paths;

you carve a mark on the soles of my feet.

28 And he himself wastes away like something rotten,

like a garment that the moth has eaten.

“A human being born of a woman

is short of days and full of troubles.

Like a flower he comes up, and he withers away;

and he flees like a shadow, but he does not last.

Even on such a one you fix your eyes,

and you bring me into judgment with you.

“Who can bring a clean thing from an unclean thing?

No one!

If his days are determined, the number of his months is with you;

you have appointed his boundaries, and he cannot cross them.

Look away from him, and let him desist

until he enjoys his days like a laborer.

Job 13:26–14:6 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

26 You write down bitter things against me.

You make me suffer for the sins

I committed when I was young.

27 You put my feet in chains.

You watch every step I take.

You do it by putting marks on the bottom of my feet.

28 “People waste away like something that is rotten.

They are like clothes that are eaten by moths.

They have only a few days to live.

Their lives are full of trouble.

They grow like flowers, and then they dry up.

They are like shadows that quickly disappear.

“God, why do you keep looking at someone like me?

Are you planning to take me to court?

Who can bring what is pure from something that isn’t pure?

No one!

You decide how long anyone will live.

You have established the number of his months.

You have set a limit to the number of his days.

So look away from him. Leave him alone.

Let him put in his time like a hired worker.

Job 13:26–14:6 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

26 “For You write bitter things against me

And make me to inherit the iniquities of my youth.

27 “You put my feet in the stocks

And watch all my paths;

You set a limit for the soles of my feet,

28 While I am decaying like a rotten thing,

Like a garment that is moth-eaten.

Man, who is born of woman,

Is short-lived and full of turmoil.

“Like a flower he comes forth and withers.

He also flees like a shadow and does not remain.

“You also open Your eyes on him

And bring him into judgment with Yourself.

Who can make the clean out of the unclean?

No one!

Since his days are determined,

The number of his months is with You;

And his limits You have set so that he cannot pass.

Turn Your gaze from him that he may rest,

Until he fulfills his day like a hired man.
