John 18:19–23 — The New International Version (NIV)

19 Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.

20 I have spoken openly to the world,” Jesus replied. I always taught in synagogues or at the temple, where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret. 21 Why question me? Ask those who heard me. Surely they know what I said.”

22 When Jesus said this, one of the officials nearby slapped him in the face. “Is this the way you answer the high priest?” he demanded.

23 If I said something wrong,” Jesus replied, testify as to what is wrong. But if I spoke the truth, why did you strike me?”

John 18:19–23 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

19 The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine. 20 Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing. 21 Why askest thou me? ask them which heard me, what I have said unto them: behold, they know what I said. 22 And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers which stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so? 23 Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why smitest thou me?

John 18:19–23 — New Living Translation (NLT)

19 Inside, the high priest began asking Jesus about his followers and what he had been teaching them. 20 Jesus replied, Everyone knows what I teach. I have preached regularly in the synagogues and the Temple, where the people gather. I have not spoken in secret. 21 Why are you asking me this question? Ask those who heard me. They know what I said.”

22 Then one of the Temple guards standing nearby slapped Jesus across the face. “Is that the way to answer the high priest?” he demanded.

23 Jesus replied, If I said anything wrong, you must prove it. But if I’m speaking the truth, why are you beating me?”

John 18:19–23 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

19 The high priest then asked Jesus about His disciples and His doctrine.

20 Jesus answered him, I spoke openly to the world. I always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where the Jews always meet, and in secret I have said nothing. 21 Why do you ask Me? Ask those who have heard Me what I said to them. Indeed they know what I said.”

22 And when He had said these things, one of the officers who stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, “Do You answer the high priest like that?”

23 Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil; but if well, why do you strike Me?”

John 18:19–23 — New Century Version (NCV)

19 The high priest asked Jesus questions about his followers and his teaching. 20 Jesus answered, I have spoken openly to everyone. I have always taught in synagogues and in the Temple, where all the Jews come together. I never said anything in secret. 21 So why do you question me? Ask the people who heard my teaching. They know what I said.”

22 When Jesus said this, one of the guards standing there hit him. The guard said, “Is that the way you answer the high priest?”

23 Jesus answered him, If I said something wrong, then show what it was. But if what I said is true, why do you hit me?”

John 18:19–23 — American Standard Version (ASV)

19 The high priest therefore asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his teaching. 20 Jesus answered him, I have spoken openly to the world; I ever taught in synagogues, and in the temple, where all the Jews come together; and in secret spake I nothing. 21 Why askest thou me? ask them that have heard me, what I spake unto them: behold, these know the things which I said. 22 And when he had said this, one of the officers standing by struck Jesus with his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so? 23 Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why smitest thou me?

Demand of those who have heard, what I have spoken to them; behold, they know what I have said. 22 But as he said these things, one of the officers who stood by gave a blow on the face to Jesus, saying, Answerest thou the high priest thus? 23 Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil; but if well, why smitest thou me?

22 When Jesus said this, one of the guards standing near Jesus slapped his face and said, “Is that how you answer the chief priest?”

23 Jesus replied to him, “If I’ve said anything wrong, tell me what it was. But if I’ve told the truth, why do you hit me?”

John 18:19–23 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

20 I have spoken openly to the world,” Jesus answered him. I have always taught in the synagogue and in the temple complex, where all the Jews congregate, and I haven’t spoken anything in secret. 21 Why do you question Me? Question those who heard what I told them. Look, they know what I said.”

22 When He had said these things, one of the temple police standing by slapped Jesus, saying, “Is this the way you answer the high priest?”

23 If I have spoken wrongly,” Jesus answered him, give evidence about the wrong; but if rightly, why do you hit Me?”

But if I have spoken correctly, why do you strike me?”

22 When Jesus said that, one of the officials nearby hit him in the face. “Is this any way to answer the high priest?” he asked.

23 “Have I said something wrong?” Jesus replied. “If I have, give witness to it. But if I spoke the truth, why did you hit me?”
