Jeremiah 23:16–18 — The New International Version (NIV)

16 This is what the Lord Almighty says:

“Do not listen to what the prophets are prophesying to you;

they fill you with false hopes.

They speak visions from their own minds,

not from the mouth of the Lord.

17 They keep saying to those who despise me,

‘The Lord says: You will have peace.’

And to all who follow the stubbornness of their hearts

they say, ‘No harm will come to you.’

18 But which of them has stood in the council of the Lord

to see or to hear his word?

Who has listened and heard his word?

Jeremiah 23:16–18 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

16 Thus saith the Lord of hosts, Hearken not unto the words of the prophets that prophesy unto you: they make you vain: they speak a vision of their own heart, and not out of the mouth of the Lord. 17 They say still unto them that despise me, The Lord hath said, Ye shall have peace; and they say unto every one that walketh after the imagination of his own heart, No evil shall come upon you. 18 For who hath stood in the counsel of the Lord, and hath perceived and heard his word? who hath marked his word, and heard it?

Jeremiah 23:16–18 — New Living Translation (NLT)

16 This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says to his people:

“Do not listen to these prophets when they prophesy to you,

filling you with futile hopes.

They are making up everything they say.

They do not speak for the Lord!

17 They keep saying to those who despise my word,

‘Don’t worry! The Lord says you will have peace!’

And to those who stubbornly follow their own desires,

they say, ‘No harm will come your way!’

18 “Have any of these prophets been in the Lord’s presence

to hear what he is really saying?

Has even one of them cared enough to listen?

Jeremiah 23:16–18 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

16 Thus says the Lord of hosts:

“Do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you.

They make you worthless;

They speak a vision of their own heart,

Not from the mouth of the Lord.

17 They continually say to those who despise Me,

‘The Lord has said, “You shall have peace” ’;

And to everyone who walks according to the dictates of his own heart, they say,

‘No evil shall come upon you.’ ”

18 For who has stood in the counsel of the Lord,

And has perceived and heard His word?

Who has marked His word and heard it?

Jeremiah 23:16–18 — New Century Version (NCV)

16 This is what the Lord All-Powerful says:

“Don’t pay attention to what those prophets are saying to you.

They are trying to fool you.

They talk about visions their own minds made up,

not about visions from me.

17 They say to those who hate me:

‘The Lord says: You will have peace.’

They say to all those who are stubborn and do as they please:

‘Nothing bad will happen to you.’

18 But none of these prophets has stood in the meeting of angels

to see or hear the message of the Lord.

None of them has paid close attention to his message.

Jeremiah 23:16–18 — American Standard Version (ASV)

16 Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, Hearken not unto the words of the prophets that prophesy unto you: they teach you vanity; they speak a vision of their own heart, and not out of the mouth of Jehovah. 17 They say continually unto them that despise me, Jehovah hath said, Ye shall have peace; and unto every one that walketh in the stubbornness of his own heart they say, No evil shall come upon you. 18 For who hath stood in the council of Jehovah, that he should perceive and hear his word? who hath marked my word, and heard it?

Jeremiah 23:16–18 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

16 Thus saith Jehovah of hosts: Hearken not unto the words of the prophets that prophesy unto you: they lead you to vanity; they speak a vision of their own heart, not out of the mouth of Jehovah. 17 They say constantly unto them that despise me, Jehovah hath said, Ye shall have peace. And they say unto every one that walketh in the stubbornness of his heart, No evil shall come upon you. 18 For who hath stood in the council of Jehovah, so that he hath perceived and heard his word? who hath hearkened to his word and listened?

Jeremiah 23:16–18 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

16 This is what the Lord of Armies says:

Don’t listen to what the prophets are saying to you.

They fill you with false hope.

They speak about visions that they dreamed up.

These visions are not from the Lord

17 They keep saying to those who despise me,

“The Lord says, ‘Everything will go well for you.’ ”

They tell all who live by their own stubborn ways,

“Nothing bad will happen to you.”

18 Who is in the Lord’s inner circle

and sees and hears his word?

Who pays attention and listens to his word?

Jeremiah 23:16–18 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

16 This is what the Lord of Hosts says: “Do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you. They are making you worthless. They speak visions from their own minds, not from the Lord’s mouth. 17 They keep on saying to those who despise Me, ‘The Lord has said: You will have peace.’ They have said to everyone who follows the stubbornness of his heart, ‘No harm will come to you.’ ”

18 For who has stood in the council of the Lord

to see and hear His word?

Who has paid attention to His word and obeyed?

Jeremiah 23:16–18 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

16 Thus says the Lord of hosts: Do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you; they are deluding you. They speak visions of their own minds, not from the mouth of the Lord. 17 They keep saying to those who despise the word of the Lord, “It shall be well with you”; and to all who stubbornly follow their own stubborn hearts, they say, “No calamity shall come upon you.”

18 For who has stood in the council of the Lord

so as to see and to hear his word?

Who has given heed to his word so as to proclaim it?

Jeremiah 23:16–18 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

16 Thus says Yahweh of hosts:

“You must not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you.

They are deluding you with visions of their mind,

They do not speak from the mouth of Yahweh.

17 They are continually saying to those who disregard the word of Yahweh,

‘Peace it will be to you,’

and to each one who walks in the stubbornness of his heart they say,

‘Calamity will not come upon you.’

18 For who has stood in the council of Yahweh,

that he has seen and heard his word?

Who has listened attentively to his word

and heard it?

Jeremiah 23:16–18 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

16 The Lord who rules over all says to the people of Judah,

“Do not listen to what the prophets are saying to you.

They fill you with false hopes.

They talk about visions that come from their own minds.

What they say does not come from my mouth.

17 They keep speaking to those who hate me. They say,

‘The Lord says you will have peace.’

They speak to all those who do

what their stubborn hearts want them to do.

They tell them, ‘No harm will come to you.’

18 But which of them has ever stood in my courts?

Have they been there to see a vision or hear my message?

Who has listened and heard my message there?

Jeremiah 23:16–18 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

16 Thus says the Lord of hosts,

“Do not listen to the words of the prophets who are prophesying to you.

They are leading you into futility;

They speak a vision of their own imagination,

Not from the mouth of the Lord.

17 “They keep saying to those who despise Me,

‘The Lord has said, “You will have peace” ’;

And as for everyone who walks in the stubbornness of his own heart,

They say, ‘Calamity will not come upon you.’

18 “But who has stood in the council of the Lord,

That he should see and hear His word?

Who has given heed to His word and listened?
