38 On all the roofs in Moab

and in the public squares

there is nothing but mourning,

for I have broken Moab

like a jar that no one wants,”

declares the Lord.

39 “How shattered she is! How they wail!

How Moab turns her back in shame!

Moab has become an object of ridicule,

an object of horror to all those around her.”

38 There shall be lamentation generally upon all the housetops of Moab, and in the streets thereof:

For I have broken Moab like a vessel wherein is no pleasure, saith the Lord.

39 They shall howl, saying, How is it broken down!

How hath Moab turned the back with shame!

So shall Moab be a derision and a dismaying to all them about him.

38 There is crying and sorrow in every Moabite home and on every street. For I have smashed Moab like an old, unwanted jar. 39 How it is shattered! Hear the wailing! See the shame of Moab! It has become an object of ridicule, an example of ruin to all its neighbors.”

38 A general lamentation

On all the housetops of Moab,

And in its streets;

For I have broken Moab like a vessel in which is no pleasure,” says the Lord.

39 “They shall wail:

‘How she is broken down!

How Moab has turned her back with shame!’

So Moab shall be a derision

And a dismay to all those about her.”

38 People are crying on every roof in Moab

and in every public square.

There is nothing but sadness,

because I have broken Moab

like a jar no one wants,” says the Lord.

39 “Moab is shattered! The people are crying!

Moab turns away in shame!

People all around her make fun of her.

The things that happened fill them with great fear.”

38 On all the housetops of Moab and in the streets thereof there is lamentation every where; for I have broken Moab like a vessel wherein none delighteth, saith Jehovah. 39 How is it broken down! how do they wail! how hath Moab turned the back with shame! so shall Moab become a derision and a terror to all that are round about him.

38 It is wholly lamentation upon all the housetops of Moab, and in the public places thereof; for I have broken Moab, like a vessel wherein is no pleasure, saith Jehovah. 39 They howl, How is it broken down! how hath Moab turned the back with shame! And Moab shall be a derision and a terror to all that are round about him.

38 People in Moab will mourn on every rooftop and in every street. There will be mourning everywhere, because I will break Moab like a jar that no one wants,” declares the Lord. 39 “They will cry, ‘Look how Moab is defeated! Moab turns away in shame!’ Moab has become something ridiculed and something held in contempt by everyone around it. 

38 On all the rooftops of Moab and in her public squares, everyone is mourning because I have shattered Moab like a jar no one wants.” This is the Lord’s declaration. 39 “How broken it is! They wail! How Moab has turned his back! He is ashamed. Moab will become a laughingstock and a shock to all those around him.”

38 On all the housetops of Moab and in the squares there is nothing but lamentation; for I have broken Moab like a vessel that no one wants, says the Lord. 39 How it is broken! How they wail! How Moab has turned his back in shame! So Moab has become a derision and a horror to all his neighbors.

38 On all the roofs of Moab, and in its public squares,

there is wailing everywhere.

For I have broken Moab like a vessel,

there is no delight in it,” declares Yahweh.

39 “How it is filled with terror! How they wail!

How Moab has turned his back! He is disgraced!

So Moab has become as a derision,

and as a terror for all his surrounding peoples.”

38 Sobbing is the only sound in Moab.

It is heard on all of its roofs.

It is heard in the market places.

I have broken Moab

like a jar that no one wants,”

announces the Lord.

39 “How broken Moab is! How the people sob!

They turn away from others

because they are so ashamed.

All those who are around them laugh at them.

They are shocked at them.”

38 “On all the housetops of Moab and in its streets there is lamentation everywhere; for I have broken Moab like an undesirable vessel,” declares the Lord.

39 “How shattered it is! How they have wailed! How Moab has turned his back—he is ashamed! So Moab will become a laughingstock and an object of terror to all around him.”
