Jeremiah 48:27–30

27 Was not Israel the object of your ridicule?

Was she caught among thieves,

that you shake your head in scorn

whenever you speak of her?

28 Abandon your towns and dwell among the rocks,

you who live in Moab.

Be like a dove that makes its nest

at the mouth of a cave.

29 “We have heard of Moab’s pride—

how great is her arrogance!—

of her insolence, her pride, her conceit

and the haughtiness of her heart.

30 I know her insolence but it is futile,”

declares the Lord,

“and her boasts accomplish nothing.

27 For was not Israel a derision unto thee?

Was he found among thieves?

For since thou spakest of him, thou skippedst for joy.

28 O ye that dwell in Moab, leave the cities, and dwell in the rock,

And be like the dove that maketh her nest in the sides of the hole’s mouth.

29 We have heard the pride of Moab, (he is exceeding proud)

His loftiness, and his arrogancy, and his pride, and the haughtiness of his heart.

30 I know his wrath, saith the Lord; but it shall not be so;

His lies shall not so effect it.

27 Did you not ridicule the people of Israel?

Were they caught in the company of thieves

that you should despise them as you do?

28 “You people of Moab,

flee from your towns and live in the caves.

Hide like doves that nest

in the clefts of the rocks.

29 We have all heard of the pride of Moab,

for his pride is very great.

We know of his lofty pride,

his arrogance, and his haughty heart.

30 I know about his insolence,”

says the Lord,

“but his boasts are empty—

as empty as his deeds.

27 For was not Israel a derision to you?

Was he found among thieves?

For whenever you speak of him,

You shake your head in scorn.

28 You who dwell in Moab,

Leave the cities and dwell in the rock,

And be like the dove which makes her nest

In the sides of the cave’s mouth.

29 “We have heard the pride of Moab

(He is exceedingly proud),

Of his loftiness and arrogance and pride,

And of the haughtiness of his heart.”

30 “I know his wrath,” says the Lord,

“But it is not right;

His lies have made nothing right.

27 Moab, you made fun of Israel.

Israel was caught in the middle of a gang of thieves.

When you spoke about Israel,

you shook your head and acted as if you were better than it.

28 People in Moab, leave your towns empty

and go live among the rocks.

Be like a dove that makes its nest

at the entrance of a cave.

29 “We have heard that the people of Moab are proud,

very proud.

They are proud, very proud,

and in their hearts they think they are important.”

30 The Lord says,

“I know Moab’s great pride, but it is useless.

Moab’s bragging accomplishes nothing.

27 For was not Israel a derision unto thee? was he found among thieves? for as often as thou speakest of him, thou waggest the head. 28 O ye inhabitants of Moab, leave the cities, and dwell in the rock; and be like the dove that maketh her nest over the mouth of the abyss. 29 We have heard of the pride of Moab, that he is very proud; his loftiness, and his pride, and his arrogancy, and the haughtiness of his heart. 30 I know his wrath, saith Jehovah, that it is nought; his boastings have wrought nothing.

27 For was not Israel a derision unto thee? Was he found among thieves, that as oft as thou didst speak of him, thou didst shake the head? 28 Leave the cities, and dwell in the rocks, ye inhabitants of Moab, and be like the dove, that maketh her nest in the sides of the cave’s mouth. 29 We have heard of the arrogance of Moab, —he is very proud; —his loftiness, and his arrogance, and his pride, and the haughtiness of his heart. 30 I know his wrath, saith Jehovah; his pratings are vain: they do not as they say.

27 People of Moab, didn’t you laugh at the people of Israel? 

Were they caught among thieves? 

Whenever you talk about them you shake your heads in contempt. 

28 People of Moab, abandon your cities. 

Live among the cliffs. 

Be like doves that make their nests at the entrance of a cave. 

29 “We have heard about the arrogance of Moab’s people. 

They are very arrogant. 

They are very arrogant, conceited, and boastful. 

30 I know how arrogant they are,” declares the Lord, 

“but it isn’t right. 

They brag and don’t do what they say. 

27 Wasn’t Israel a laughingstock to you? Was he ever found among thieves? For whenever you speak of him you shake your head.”

28 Abandon the towns! Live in the cliffs,

residents of Moab!

Be like a dove

that nests inside the mouth of a cave.

29 We have heard of Moab’s pride,

great pride, indeed—

his insolence, arrogance, pride,

and haughty heart.

30 I know his outburst.

This is the Lord’s declaration.

It is empty.

His boast is empty.

27 Israel was a laughingstock for you, though he was not caught among thieves, but whenever you spoke of him you shook your head!

28 Leave the towns, and live on the rock,

O inhabitants of Moab!

Be like the dove that nests

on the sides of the mouth of a gorge.

29 We have heard of the pride of Moab—

he is very proud—

of his loftiness, his pride, and his arrogance,

and the haughtiness of his heart.

30 I myself know his insolence, says the Lord;

his boasts are false;

his deeds are false.

27 Now was not Israel the laughingstock to you?

Or was he found among thieves?

For as often as you spoke over him

you shook your head.

28 Leave the towns and dwell on the rock,

O inhabitants of Moab,

and be like the dove,

it nests on the sides of the mouth of a ravine.

29 We have heard of the pride of Moab

—he is very proud—

his height, and his pride, and his arrogance,

and the haughtiness of his heart.

30 I know his insolence,” declares Yahweh,

“and his boastings are false;

they act falsely.

27 Moab, you laughed at Israel, didn’t you?

Were Israel’s people caught among robbers?

Is that why you shake your head at them?

Is that why you make fun of them

every time you talk about them?

28 Leave your towns,

you who live in Moab.

Go and live among the rocks.

Be like a dove that makes its nest

at the mouth of a cave.

29 “We have heard all about Moab’s pride.

We have heard how very proud they are.

They think they are so much better than others.

Their pride reaches deep down inside their hearts.

30 I know how rude they are.

But it will not get them anywhere,”

announces the Lord.

“Their bragging does not accomplish anything.

27 “Now was not Israel a laughingstock to you? Or was he caught among thieves? For each time you speak about him you shake your head in scorn.

28 “Leave the cities and dwell among the crags,

O inhabitants of Moab,

And be like a dove that nests

Beyond the mouth of the chasm.

29 “We have heard of the pride of Moab—he is very proud—

Of his haughtiness, his pride, his arrogance and his self-exaltation.

30 “I know his fury,” declares the Lord,

“But it is futile;

His idle boasts have accomplished nothing.
