Jeremiah 6:16–20 — The New International Version (NIV)

16 This is what the Lord says:

“Stand at the crossroads and look;

ask for the ancient paths,

ask where the good way is, and walk in it,

and you will find rest for your souls.

But you said, ‘We will not walk in it.’

17 I appointed watchmen over you and said,

‘Listen to the sound of the trumpet!’

But you said, ‘We will not listen.’

18 Therefore hear, you nations;

you who are witnesses,

observe what will happen to them.

19 Hear, you earth:

I am bringing disaster on this people,

the fruit of their schemes,

because they have not listened to my words

and have rejected my law.

20 What do I care about incense from Sheba

or sweet calamus from a distant land?

Your burnt offerings are not acceptable;

your sacrifices do not please me.”

Jeremiah 6:16–20 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

16 Thus saith the Lord, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein. 17 Also I set watchmen over you, saying, Hearken to the sound of the trumpet. But they said, We will not hearken. 18 Therefore hear, ye nations, and know, O congregation, what is among them. 19 Hear, O earth: behold, I will bring evil upon this people, even the fruit of their thoughts, because they have not hearkened unto my words, nor to my law, but rejected it. 20 To what purpose cometh there to me incense from Sheba, and the sweet cane from a far country? your burnt offerings are not acceptable, nor your sacrifices sweet unto me.

Jeremiah 6:16–20 — New Living Translation (NLT)

16 This is what the Lord says:

“Stop at the crossroads and look around.

Ask for the old, godly way, and walk in it.

Travel its path, and you will find rest for your souls.

But you reply, ‘No, that’s not the road we want!’

17 I posted watchmen over you who said,

‘Listen for the sound of the alarm.’

But you replied,

‘No! We won’t pay attention!’

18 “Therefore, listen to this, all you nations.

Take note of my people’s situation.

19 Listen, all the earth!

I will bring disaster on my people.

It is the fruit of their own schemes,

because they refuse to listen to me.

They have rejected my word.

20 There’s no use offering me sweet frankincense from Sheba.

Keep your fragrant calamus imported from distant lands!

I will not accept your burnt offerings.

Your sacrifices have no pleasing aroma for me.”

Jeremiah 6:16–20 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

16 Thus says the Lord:

“Stand in the ways and see,

And ask for the old paths, where the good way is,

And walk in it;

Then you will find rest for your souls.

But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.’

17 Also, I set watchmen over you, saying,

‘Listen to the sound of the trumpet!’

But they said, ‘We will not listen.’

18 Therefore hear, you nations,

And know, O congregation, what is among them.

19 Hear, O earth!

Behold, I will certainly bring calamity on this people—

The fruit of their thoughts,

Because they have not heeded My words

Nor My law, but rejected it.

20 For what purpose to Me

Comes frankincense from Sheba,

And sweet cane from a far country?

Your burnt offerings are not acceptable,

Nor your sacrifices sweet to Me.”

Jeremiah 6:16–20 — New Century Version (NCV)

16 This is what the Lord says:

“Stand where the roads cross and look.

Ask where the old way is,

where the good way is, and walk on it.

If you do, you will find rest for yourselves.

But they have said, ‘We will not walk on the good way.’

17 I set watchmen over you

and told you, ‘Listen for the sound of the war trumpet!’

But they said, ‘We will not listen.’

18 So listen, all you nations,

and pay attention, you witnesses.

Watch what I will do to the people of Judah.

19 Hear this, people of the earth:

I am going to bring disaster to the people of Judah

because of the evil they plan.

They have not listened to my messages

and have rejected my teachings.

20 Why do you bring me offerings of incense from the land of Sheba?

Why do you bring me sweet-smelling cane from a faraway land?

Your burnt offerings will not be accepted;

your sacrifices do not please me.”

Jeremiah 6:16–20 — American Standard Version (ASV)

16 Thus saith Jehovah, Stand ye in the ways and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way; and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls: but they said, We will not walk therein. 17 And I set watchmen over you, saying, Hearken to the sound of the trumpet; but they said, We will not hearken. 18 Therefore hear, ye nations, and know, O congregation, what is among them. 19 Hear, O earth: behold, I will bring evil upon this people, even the fruit of their thoughts, because they have not hearkened unto my words; and as for my law, they have rejected it. 20 To what purpose cometh there to me frankincense from Sheba, and the sweet cane from a far country? your burnt-offerings are not acceptable, nor your sacrifices pleasing unto me.

Jeremiah 6:16–20 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

16 Thus saith Jehovah: Stand in the ways and see, and ask for the ancient paths, which is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein. 17 Also I have set watchmen over you: —Hearken ye to the sound of the trumpet. But they said, We will not hearken.

18 Therefore hear, ye nations, and know, O assembly, what is among them. 19 Hear, O earth: behold, I will bring evil upon this people, the fruit of their thoughts; for they have not hearkened unto my words, and as to my law, they have rejected it. 20 To what purpose should there come to me incense from Sheba, and the sweet cane from a far country? Your burnt-offerings are not acceptable, nor are your sacrifices pleasing unto me.

Jeremiah 6:16–20 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

16 This is what the Lord says:

Stand at the crossroads and look.

Ask which paths are the old, reliable paths.

Ask which way leads to blessings.

Live that way, and find a resting place for yourselves.

But you said that you wouldn’t live that way.

17 I posted watchmen over you.

Pay attention to the sound of the ram’s horn.

But you said that you wouldn’t pay attention.

18 Listen, you nations,

and learn, you witnesses, what will happen to them.

19 Listen, earth!

I’m going to bring disaster on these people.

It is the result of their own plots,

because they won’t pay attention to my words.

They reject my teachings.

20 Incense that comes from Sheba is no good to me.

Sugar cane that comes from a distant land is no good to me.

I won’t accept your burnt offerings.

I’m not pleased with your sacrifices.

Jeremiah 6:16–20 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

16 This is what the Lord says:

Stand by the roadways and look.

Ask about the ancient paths:

Which is the way to what is good?

Then take it

and find rest for yourselves.

But they protested, “We won’t!”

17 I appointed watchmen over you

and said: Listen for the sound of the ram’s horn.

But they protested, “We won’t listen!”

18 Therefore listen, you nations

and you witnesses,

learn what the charge is against them.

19 Listen, earth!

I am about to bring disaster on these people,

the fruit of their own plotting,

for they have paid no attention to My word.

They have rejected My instruction.

20 What use to Me is frankincense from Sheba

or sweet cane from a distant land?

Your burnt offerings are not acceptable;

your sacrifices do not please Me.

Jeremiah 6:16–20 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

16 Thus says the Lord:

Stand at the crossroads, and look,

and ask for the ancient paths,

where the good way lies; and walk in it,

and find rest for your souls.

But they said, “We will not walk in it.”

17 Also I raised up sentinels for you:

“Give heed to the sound of the trumpet!”

But they said, “We will not give heed.”

18 Therefore hear, O nations,

and know, O congregation, what will happen to them.

19 Hear, O earth; I am going to bring disaster on this people,

the fruit of their schemes,

because they have not given heed to my words;

and as for my teaching, they have rejected it.

20 Of what use to me is frankincense that comes from Sheba,

or sweet cane from a distant land?

Your burnt offerings are not acceptable,

nor are your sacrifices pleasing to me.

Jeremiah 6:16–20 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

16 Thus says Yahweh: “Stand at the roads and look,

and ask for the ancient paths, where the way of the good is,

and walk in it, and find rest for your inner selves.

But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.’

17 And I raised up watchmen over you:

‘Listen attentively to the sound of a horn.’

But they said, ‘We will not listen attentively.’

18 Therefore hear, O nations, and know, O community,

what will happen to them.

19 Hear, O earth,

look, I am about to bring disaster to this people,

the fruit of their plans,

because they have not listened attentively to my words,

and my teaching, they have rejected it also.

20 What is this to me?

Frankincense comes from Sheba,

and the precious spice reed from a distant land.

Your burnt offerings are not acceptable,

your sacrifices are not pleasing to me.”

Jeremiah 6:16–20 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

16 The Lord tells the people of Judah,

“Stand where the roads cross, and look around.

Ask where the old paths are.

Ask for the good path, and walk on it.

Then your hearts will find rest in me.

But you said, ‘We won’t walk on it.’

17 I appointed prophets to warn you. I said,

‘Listen to the sound of the trumpets!’

But you said, ‘We won’t listen.’

18 So pay attention, you nations.

Be witnesses for me.

Watch what will happen to my people.

19 Earth, pay attention.

I am going to bring trouble on them.

I will punish them because of the evil things they have done.

They have not listened to my words.

They have said no to my law.

20 What do I care about incense from the land of Sheba?

Why should I bother with sweet-smelling cane from a land far away?

I do not accept your burnt offerings.

Your sacrifices do not please me.”

Jeremiah 6:16–20 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

16 Thus says the Lord,

Stand by the ways and see and ask for the ancient paths,

Where the good way is, and walk in it;

And you will find rest for your souls.

But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.

17 “And I set watchmen over you, saying,

Listen to the sound of the trumpet!’

But they said, ‘We will not listen.’

18 Therefore hear, O nations,

And know, O congregation, what is among them.

19 Hear, O earth: behold, I am bringing disaster on this people,

The fruit of their plans,

Because they have not listened to My words,

And as for My law, they have rejected it also.

20 “For what purpose does frankincense come to Me from Sheba

And the sweet cane from a distant land?

Your burnt offerings are not acceptable

And your sacrifices are not pleasing to Me.”
