Jeremiah 48:43–45

43 Terror and pit and snare await you,

you people of Moab,”

declares the Lord.

44 “Whoever flees from the terror

will fall into a pit,

whoever climbs out of the pit

will be caught in a snare;

for I will bring on Moab

the year of her punishment,”

declares the Lord.

45 “In the shadow of Heshbon

the fugitives stand helpless,

for a fire has gone out from Heshbon,

a blaze from the midst of Sihon;

it burns the foreheads of Moab,

the skulls of the noisy boasters.

43 Fear, and the pit, and the snare, shall be upon thee,

O inhabitant of Moab, saith the Lord.

44 He that fleeth from the fear shall fall into the pit;

And he that getteth up out of the pit shall be taken in the snare:

For I will bring upon it, even upon Moab, the year of their visitation, saith the Lord.

45 They that fled stood under the shadow of Heshbon because of the force:

But a fire shall come forth out of Heshbon,

And a flame from the midst of Sihon,

And shall devour the corner of Moab,

And the crown of the head of the tumultuous ones.

43 “Terror and traps and snares will be your lot,

O Moab,” says the Lord.

44 “Those who flee in terror will fall into a trap,

and those who escape the trap will step into a snare.

I will see to it that you do not get away,

for the time of your judgment has come,”

says the Lord.

45 “The people flee as far as Heshbon

but are unable to go on.

For a fire comes from Heshbon,

King Sihon’s ancient home,

to devour the entire land

with all its rebellious people.

43 Fear and the pit and the snare shall be upon you,

O inhabitant of Moab,” says the Lord.

44 “He who flees from the fear shall fall into the pit,

And he who gets out of the pit shall be caught in the snare.

For upon Moab, upon it I will bring

The year of their punishment,” says the Lord.

45 “Those who fled stood under the shadow of Heshbon

Because of exhaustion.

But a fire shall come out of Heshbon,

A flame from the midst of Sihon,

And shall devour the brow of Moab,

The crown of the head of the sons of tumult.

43 Fear, deep pits, and traps wait for you,

people of Moab,” says the Lord.

44 “People will run from fear,

but they will fall into the pits.

Anyone who climbs out of the pits

will be caught in the traps.

I will bring the year of punishment to Moab,” says the Lord.

45 “People have run from the powerful enemy

and have gone to Heshbon for safety.

But fire started in Heshbon;

a blaze has spread from the hometown of Sihon king of Moab.

It burned up the leaders of Moab

and destroyed those proud people.

43 Fear, and the pit, and the snare, are upon thee, O inhabitant of Moab, saith Jehovah. 44 He that fleeth from the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that getteth up out of the pit shall be taken in the snare: for I will bring upon him, even upon Moab, the year of their visitation, saith Jehovah.

45 They that fled stand without strength under the shadow of Heshbon; for a fire is gone forth out of Heshbon, and a flame from the midst of Sihon, and hath devoured the corner of Moab, and the crown of the head of the tumultuous ones.

43 Fear, and the pit, and the snare shall be upon thee, O inhabitant of Moab, saith Jehovah. 44 He that fleeth from the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that getteth up out of the pit shall be taken in the snare: for I will bring upon her, upon Moab, the year of their visitation, saith Jehovah. 45 They that fled stood under the shadow of Heshbon powerless; for a fire hath come forth from Heshbon, and a flame from the midst of Sihon, and hath consumed the corner of Moab, and the crown of the head of the sons of tumult.

43 Disasters, pits, and traps are in store for those who live in Moab,” 

declares the Lord. 

44 “Whoever flees from a disaster will fall into a pit. 

Whoever climbs out of the pit will be caught in a trap. 

I will bring a year of punishment to Moab,” declares the Lord. 

45 “Those who flee will stand exhausted in the shadow of Heshbon. 

A fire will come out of Heshbon and a flame from Sihon. 

It will burn the foreheads of the people of Moab 

and the skulls of those noisy people. 

43 Panic, pit, and trap

await you, resident of Moab.

This is the Lord’s declaration.

44 He who flees from the panic will fall in the pit,

and he who climbs from the pit

will be captured in the trap,

for I will bring against Moab

the year of their punishment.

This is the Lord’s declaration.

45 Those who flee will stand exhausted in Heshbon’s shadow

because fire has come out from Heshbon

and a flame from within Sihon.

It will devour Moab’s forehead

and the skull of the noisemakers.

43 Terror, pit, and trap

are before you, O inhabitants of Moab!

says the Lord.

44 Everyone who flees from the terror

shall fall into the pit,

and everyone who climbs out of the pit

shall be caught in the trap.

For I will bring these things upon Moab

in the year of their punishment,

says the Lord.

45 In the shadow of Heshbon

fugitives stop exhausted,

for a fire has gone out from Heshbon,

a flame from the house of Sihon;

it has destroyed the forehead of Moab,

the scalp of the people of tumult.

43 Dread, and pit, and a trapping net are against you,

O inhabitant of Moab,” declares Yahweh.

44 “He who flees before the dread

will fall into the pit,

and the one who climbs up from the pit

will be caught in the trapping net,

for I will bring on Moab

the year of their punishment,” declares Yahweh.

45 “In the shadow of Heshbon

fugitives stand without strength,

for a fire has gone out from Heshbon,

and a flame from Sihon.

And it has eaten the forehead of Moab,

and the skulls of the people of tumult.

43 You people of Moab,”

announces the Lord,

“terror, a pit and a trap are waiting for you.

44 Anyone who runs away from the terror

will fall into the pit.

Anyone who climbs out of the pit

will be caught in the trap.

The time is coming

when I will punish Moab,”

announces the Lord.

45 “In the shadow of Heshbon

those who are trying to escape stand helpless.

A fire has blazed out from Heshbon.

Flames have come out from Sihon’s city.

It burns the foreheads of Moab’s people.

It burns the skulls of those who brag loudly.

43 “Terror, pit and snare are coming upon you,

O inhabitant of Moab,” declares the Lord.

44 “The one who flees from the terror

Will fall into the pit,

And the one who climbs up out of the pit

Will be caught in the snare;

For I shall bring upon her, even upon Moab,

The year of their punishment,” declares the Lord.

45 “In the shadow of Heshbon

The fugitives stand without strength;

For a fire has gone forth from Heshbon

And a flame from the midst of Sihon,

And it has devoured the forehead of Moab

And the scalps of the riotous revelers.
