Isaiah 8:9–15 — The New International Version (NIV)

Raise the war cry, you nations, and be shattered!

Listen, all you distant lands.

Prepare for battle, and be shattered!

Prepare for battle, and be shattered!

10 Devise your strategy, but it will be thwarted;

propose your plan, but it will not stand,

for God is with us.

11 This is what the Lord says to me with his strong hand upon me, warning me not to follow the way of this people:

12 “Do not call conspiracy

everything this people calls a conspiracy;

do not fear what they fear,

and do not dread it.

13 The Lord Almighty is the one you are to regard as holy,

he is the one you are to fear,

he is the one you are to dread.

14 He will be a holy place;

for both Israel and Judah he will be

a stone that causes people to stumble

and a rock that makes them fall.

And for the people of Jerusalem he will be

a trap and a snare.

15 Many of them will stumble;

they will fall and be broken,

they will be snared and captured.”

Isaiah 8:9–15 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

Associate yourselves, O ye people, and ye shall be broken in pieces;

And give ear, all ye of far countries:

Gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces;

Gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces.

10 Take counsel together, and it shall come to nought;

Speak the word, and it shall not stand:

For God is with us.

11 For the Lord spake thus to me with a strong hand,

And instructed me that I should not walk in the way of this people, saying,

12 Say ye not, A confederacy,

To all them to whom this people shall say, A confederacy;

Neither fear ye their fear, nor be afraid.

13 Sanctify the Lord of hosts himself;

And let him be your fear, and let him be your dread.

14 And he shall be for a sanctuary;

But for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel,

For a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

15 And many among them shall stumble, and fall, and be broken,

And be snared, and be taken.

Isaiah 8:9–15 — New Living Translation (NLT)

“Huddle together, you nations, and be terrified.

Listen, all you distant lands.

Prepare for battle, but you will be crushed!

Yes, prepare for battle, but you will be crushed!

10 Call your councils of war, but they will be worthless.

Develop your strategies, but they will not succeed.

For God is with us!”

11 The Lord has given me a strong warning not to think like everyone else does. He said,

12 “Don’t call everything a conspiracy, like they do,

and don’t live in dread of what frightens them.

13 Make the Lord of Heaven’s Armies holy in your life.

He is the one you should fear.

He is the one who should make you tremble.

14 He will keep you safe.

But to Israel and Judah

he will be a stone that makes people stumble,

a rock that makes them fall.

And for the people of Jerusalem

he will be a trap and a snare.

15 Many will stumble and fall,

never to rise again.

They will be snared and captured.”

Isaiah 8:9–15 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

“Be shattered, O you peoples, and be broken in pieces!

Give ear, all you from far countries.

Gird yourselves, but be broken in pieces;

Gird yourselves, but be broken in pieces.

10 Take counsel together, but it will come to nothing;

Speak the word, but it will not stand,

For God is with us.”

11 For the Lord spoke thus to me with a strong hand, and instructed me that I should not walk in the way of this people, saying:

12 “Do not say, ‘A conspiracy,’

Concerning all that this people call a conspiracy,

Nor be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled.

13 The Lord of hosts, Him you shall hallow;

Let Him be your fear,

And let Him be your dread.

14 He will be as a sanctuary,

But a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense

To both the houses of Israel,

As a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

15 And many among them shall stumble;

They shall fall and be broken,

Be snared and taken.”

Isaiah 8:9–15 — New Century Version (NCV)

Be broken, all you nations,

and be smashed to pieces.

Listen, all you faraway countries.

Prepare for battle and be smashed to pieces!

Prepare for battle and be smashed to pieces!

10 Make your plans for the fight,

but they will be defeated.

Give orders to your armies,

but they will be useless,

because God is with us.

11 The Lord spoke to me with his great power and warned me not to follow the lead of the rest of the people. He said,

12 “People are saying that others make plans against them,

but you should not believe them.

Don’t be afraid of what they fear;

do not dread those things.

13 But remember that the Lord All-Powerful is holy.

He is the one you should fear;

he is the one you should dread.

14 Then he will be a place of safety for you.

But for the two families of Israel,

he will be like a stone that causes people to stumble,

like a rock that makes them fall.

He will be like a trap for the people of Jerusalem,

and he will catch them in his trap.

15 Many people will fall over this rock.

They will fall and be broken;

they will be trapped and caught.”

Isaiah 8:9–15 — American Standard Version (ASV)

Make an uproar, O ye peoples, and be broken in pieces; and give ear, all ye of far countries: gird yourselves, and be broken in pieces; gird yourselves, and be broken in pieces. 10 Take counsel together, and it shall be brought to nought; speak the word, and it shall not stand: for God is with us. 11 For Jehovah spake thus to me with a strong hand, and instructed me not to walk in the way of this people, saying, 12 Say ye not, A conspiracy, concerning all whereof this people shall say, A conspiracy; neither fear ye their fear, nor be in dread thereof. 13 Jehovah of hosts, him shall ye sanctify; and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread. 14 And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 15 And many shall stumble thereon, and fall, and be broken, and be snared, and be taken.

Isaiah 8:9–15 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

Rage, ye peoples, and be broken in pieces! And give ear, all ye distant parts of the earth: Gird yourselves, and be broken in pieces; gird yourselves, and be broken in pieces! 10 Settle a plan, and it shall come to nought; speak a word, and it shall not stand: for •God is with us. 11 For Jehovah spoke thus to me with a strong hand, and he instructed me not to walk in the way of this people, saying, 12 Ye shall not say, Conspiracy, of everything of which this people saith, Conspiracy; and fear ye not their fear, and be not in dread. 13 Jehovah of hosts, him shall ye sanctify; and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread. 14 And he will be for a sanctuary; and for a stone of stumbling, and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 15 And many among them shall stumble, and fall, and be broken, and snared, and taken.

Isaiah 8:9–15 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

Be broken, you people. Be terrified.

Listen, all you distant parts of the earth.

Prepare for battle, but be terrified.

Prepare for battle, but be terrified.

10 Make plans for battle, but they will never succeed.

Give orders, but they won’t be carried out,

because God is with us!

11 This is what the Lord said with his powerful hand on me.

He warned me not to follow the ways of these people:

12 “Don’t say that everything these people call a conspiracy

is a conspiracy.

Don’t fear what they fear.

Don’t let it terrify you.”

13 Remember that the Lord of Armies is holy.

He is the one you should fear

and the one you should be terrified of.

14 He will be a place of safety for you.

But he will be a rock that makes people trip

and a stumbling block for both kingdoms of Israel.

He will be a trap and a snare for those who live in Jerusalem.

15 Many will stumble.

They will fall and be broken.

They will be trapped and caught.

Isaiah 8:9–15 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

Band together, peoples, and be broken;

pay attention, all you distant lands;

prepare for war, and be broken;

prepare for war, and be broken.

10 Devise a plan; it will fail.

Make a prediction; it will not happen.

For God is with us.

11 For this is what the Lord said to me with great power, to keep me from going the way of this people:

12 Do not call everything an alliance

these people say is an alliance.

Do not fear what they fear;

do not be terrified.

13 You are to regard only the Lord of Hosts as holy.

Only He should be feared;

only He should be held in awe.

14 He will be a sanctuary;

but for the two houses of Israel,

He will be a stone to stumble over

and a rock to trip over,

and a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

15 Many will stumble over these;

they will fall and be broken;

they will be snared and captured.

Isaiah 8:9–15 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

Band together, you peoples, and be dismayed;

listen, all you far countries;

gird yourselves and be dismayed;

gird yourselves and be dismayed!

10 Take counsel together, but it shall be brought to naught;

speak a word, but it will not stand,

for God is with us.

11 For the Lord spoke thus to me while his hand was strong upon me, and warned me not to walk in the way of this people, saying: 12 Do not call conspiracy all that this people calls conspiracy, and do not fear what it fears, or be in dread. 13 But the Lord of hosts, him you shall regard as holy; let him be your fear, and let him be your dread. 14 He will become a sanctuary, a stone one strikes against; for both houses of Israel he will become a rock one stumbles over—a trap and a snare for the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 15 And many among them shall stumble; they shall fall and be broken; they shall be snared and taken.

Isaiah 8:9–15 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

Be broken, you peoples, and be dismayed.

And listen, all distant parts of the earth;

gird yourselves and be dismayed;

gird yourselves and be dismayed!

10 Make a plan, but it will be frustrated!

Speak a word, but it will not stand,

for God is with us!

11 For Yahweh said this to me while his hand weighed heavily on me,

and he warned me not to walk in the way of this people, saying,

12 “You must not call conspiracy everything that this people calls conspiracy,

and you must not share its fear, and you must not be in dread.

13 You shall regard Yahweh of hosts as holy,

and he is your fear, and he is your dread.

14 And he will become like a sanctuary and a stumbling-stone,

and like a stumbling-rock for the two houses of Israel,

like a trap and a snare for the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

15 And many shall stumble among them,

and they shall fall and they shall be broken,

and they shall be ensnared and they shall be caught.”

Isaiah 8:9–15 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

Sound the battle cry, you nations!

But you will be torn apart.

Listen, all of you lands far away!

Prepare for battle! But you will be torn apart.

Prepare for battle! But you will be torn apart.

10 Make your battle plans! But you won’t succeed.

Give your orders! But they won’t be carried out.

That’s because God is with us.

11 The Lord put his powerful hand on me and spoke to me. He warned me not to live the way these people live. He said,

12 “People of Judah, do not agree with those who say

Isaiah is guilty of treason.

Do not fear what they fear.

Do not be afraid.

13 I am the Lord who rules over all.

You must think about me as holy.

You must have respect for me.

You must fear me.

14 Then I will be a holy place of safety for you.

But for many people in Israel and Judah I will be

a stone that causes them to trip.

I will be a rock that makes them fall.

And for the people of Jerusalem I will be

a trap and a snare.

15 Many of them will trip.

They will fall and be broken.

They will be trapped and captured.”

Isaiah 8:9–15 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

“Be broken, O peoples, and be shattered;

And give ear, all remote places of the earth.

Gird yourselves, yet be shattered;

Gird yourselves, yet be shattered.

10 Devise a plan, but it will be thwarted;

State a proposal, but it will not stand,

For God is with us.”

11 For thus the Lord spoke to me with mighty power and instructed me not to walk in the way of this people, saying,

12 “You are not to say, ‘It is a conspiracy!’

In regard to all that this people call a conspiracy,

And you are not to fear what they fear or be in dread of it.

13 “It is the Lord of hosts whom you should regard as holy.

And He shall be your fear,

And He shall be your dread.

14 “Then He shall become a sanctuary;

But to both the houses of Israel, a stone to strike and a rock to stumble over,

And a snare and a trap for the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

15 Many will stumble over them,

Then they will fall and be broken;

They will even be snared and caught.”
