1 “Woe to the obstinate children,”

declares the Lord,

“to those who carry out plans that are not mine,

forming an alliance, but not by my Spirit,

heaping sin upon sin;

2 who go down to Egypt

without consulting me;

who look for help to Pharaoh’s protection,

to Egypt’s shade for refuge.

1 Woe to the rebellious children, saith the Lord,

That take counsel, but not of me;

And that cover with a covering, but not of my spirit,

That they may add sin to sin:

2 That walk to go down into Egypt,

And have not asked at my mouth;

To strengthen themselves in the strength of Pharaoh,

And to trust in the shadow of Egypt!

1 “What sorrow awaits my rebellious children,”

says the Lord.

“You make plans that are contrary to mine.

You make alliances not directed by my Spirit,

thus piling up your sins.

2 For without consulting me,

you have gone down to Egypt for help.

You have put your trust in Pharaoh’s protection.

You have tried to hide in his shade.

1 “Woe to the rebellious children,” says the Lord,

“Who take counsel, but not of Me,

And who devise plans, but not of My Spirit,

That they may add sin to sin;

2 Who walk to go down to Egypt,

And have not asked My advice,

To strengthen themselves in the strength of Pharaoh,

And to trust in the shadow of Egypt!

1 The Lord said,

“How terrible it will be for these stubborn children.

They make plans, but they don’t ask me to help them.

They make agreements with other nations, without asking my Spirit.

They are adding more and more sins to themselves.

2 They go down to Egypt for help

without asking me about it first.

They hope they will be saved by the king of Egypt;

they want Egypt to protect them.

1 Woe to the rebellious children, saith Jehovah, that take counsel, but not of me; and that make a league, but not of my Spirit, that they may add sin to sin, 2 that set out to go down into Egypt, and have not asked at my mouth; to strengthen themselves in the strength of Pharaoh, and to take refuge in the shadow of Egypt!

1 Woe to the rebellious children, saith Jehovah, who take counsel, but not of me, and who make leagues, but not by my Spirit, that they may heap sin upon sin; 2 who walk to go down into Egypt, and have not asked of my mouth, —to take refuge under the protection of Pharaoh, and trust in the shadow of Egypt!

1 The Lord declares, 

“How horrible it will be for those rebellious children. 

They carry out plans, but not mine. 

They make alliances against my will. 

They pile sin on top of sin. 

2 They go to Egypt without asking me. 

They look for shelter under Pharaoh’s protection 

and look for refuge in Egypt’s shadow. 

1 Woe to the rebellious children!

This is the Lord’s declaration.

They carry out a plan, but not Mine;

they make an alliance,

but against My will,

piling sin on top of sin.

2 They set out to go down to Egypt

without asking My advice,

in order to seek shelter under Pharaoh’s protection

and take refuge in Egypt’s shadow.

1 Oh, rebellious children, says the Lord,

who carry out a plan, but not mine;

who make an alliance, but against my will,

adding sin to sin;

2 who set out to go down to Egypt

without asking for my counsel,

to take refuge in the protection of Pharaoh,

and to seek shelter in the shadow of Egypt;

1 “Oh rebellious children!” declares Yahweh,

“to make a plan, but not from me,

and pour out a libation, but not from my Spirit,

so as to add sin to sin.

2 Who go to go down to Egypt,

but they do not ask of my mouth,

to take refuge in the protection of Pharaoh

and to take refuge in the shadow of Egypt.

1 “How terrible it will be for these stubborn children of mine!”

announces the Lord.

“How terrible for those who carry out plans that did not come from me!

Their agreement with Egypt did not come from my Spirit.

So they pile up one sin on top of another.

2 They go down to Egypt

without asking me for advice.

They look to Pharaoh to help them.

They ask Egypt to keep them safe.

1 “Woe to the rebellious children,” declares the Lord,

“Who execute a plan, but not Mine,

And make an alliance, but not of My Spirit,

In order to add sin to sin;

2 Who proceed down to Egypt

Without consulting Me,

To take refuge in the safety of Pharaoh

And to seek shelter in the shadow of Egypt!
