Isaiah 22:11–14

11 You built a reservoir between the two walls

for the water of the Old Pool,

but you did not look to the One who made it,

or have regard for the One who planned it long ago.

12 The Lord, the Lord Almighty,

called you on that day

to weep and to wail,

to tear out your hair and put on sackcloth.

13 But see, there is joy and revelry,

slaughtering of cattle and killing of sheep,

eating of meat and drinking of wine!

“Let us eat and drink,” you say,

“for tomorrow we die!”

14 The Lord Almighty has revealed this in my hearing: “Till your dying day this sin will not be atoned for,” says the Lord, the Lord Almighty.

11 Ye made also a ditch between the two walls for the water of the old pool:

But ye have not looked unto the maker thereof,

Neither had respect unto him that fashioned it long ago.

12 And in that day did the Lord God of hosts call to weeping, and to mourning,

And to baldness, and to girding with sackcloth:

13 And behold joy and gladness,

Slaying oxen, and killing sheep,

Eating flesh, and drinking wine:

Let us eat and drink; for to morrow we shall die.

14 And it was revealed in mine ears by the Lord of hosts,

Surely this iniquity shall not be purged from you till ye die,

Saith the Lord God of hosts.

11 Between the city walls, you build a reservoir

for water from the old pool.

But you never ask for help from the One who did all this.

You never considered the One who planned this long ago.

12 At that time the Lord, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies,

called you to weep and mourn.

He told you to shave your heads in sorrow for your sins

and to wear clothes of burlap to show your remorse.

13 But instead, you dance and play;

you slaughter cattle and kill sheep.

You feast on meat and drink wine.

You say, “Let’s feast and drink,

for tomorrow we die!”

14 The Lord of Heaven’s Armies has revealed this to me: “Till the day you die, you will never be forgiven for this sin.” That is the judgment of the Lord, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.

For the water of the old pool.

But you did not look to its Maker,

Nor did you have respect for Him who fashioned it long ago.

12 And in that day the Lord God of hosts

Called for weeping and for mourning,

For baldness and for girding with sackcloth.

13 But instead, joy and gladness,

Slaying oxen and killing sheep,

Eating meat and drinking wine:

“Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die!”

14 Then it was revealed in my hearing by the Lord of hosts,

“Surely for this iniquity there will be no atonement for you,

Even to your death,” says the Lord God of hosts.

11 You made a pool between the two walls

to save water from the old pool,

but you did not trust the God who made these things;

you did not respect the One who planned them long ago.

12 The Lord God All-Powerful told the people

to cry and be sad,

to shave their heads and wear rough cloth.

13 But look, the people are happy

and are having wild parties.

They kill the cattle and the sheep;

they eat the food and drink the wine.

They say, “Let us eat and drink,

because tomorrow we will die.”

14 The Lord All-Powerful said to me: “You people will die before this guilt is forgiven.” The Lord God All-Powerful said this.

11 ye made also a reservoir between the two walls for the water of the old pool. But ye looked not unto him that had done this, neither had ye respect unto him that purposed it long ago.

12 And in that day did the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, call to weeping, and to mourning, and to baldness, and to girding with sackcloth: 13 and behold, joy and gladness, slaying oxen and killing sheep, eating flesh and drinking wine: let us eat and drink, for to-morrow we shall die. 14 And Jehovah of hosts revealed himself in mine ears, Surely this iniquity shall not be forgiven you till ye die, saith the Lord, Jehovah of hosts.

11 and ye have made a reservoir between the two walls for the water of the old pool: but ye have not had regard unto the maker thereof, neither have ye looked unto him that fashioned it long ago. 12 And in that day did the Lord Jehovah of hosts call to weeping, and to mourning, and to baldness, and to girding with sackcloth; 13 and behold joy and rejoicing, slaying oxen, and killing sheep, eating flesh, and drinking wine: —Let us eat and drink, for to-morrow we die. 14 And it was revealed in mine ears by Jehovah of hosts: Assuredly this iniquity shall not be purged from you till ye die, saith the Lord, Jehovah of hosts.

11 You will build a reservoir between the two walls 

to hold the water of the Old Pool. 

You didn’t look to Jerusalem’s maker. 

You didn’t see the one who formed it long ago. 

12 On that day the Almighty Lord of Armies 

will call for crying and for mourning, 

for shaving your heads and for wearing sackcloth. 

13 Instead, you will rejoice, celebrate, 

slaughter cattle, and butcher sheep. 

You will eat meat, drink wine, and say, 

“Let’s eat and drink because tomorrow we’re going to die.” 

14 The Lord of Armies revealed this to me: “Certainly, this wrong will not be forgiven even when you die,” says the Almighty Lord of Armies. 

11 You made a reservoir between the walls for the waters of the ancient pool, but you did not look to the One who made it, or consider the One who created it long ago.

12 On that day the Lord God of Hosts

called for weeping, for wailing, for shaven heads,

and for the wearing of sackcloth.

13 But look: joy and gladness,

butchering of cattle, slaughtering of sheep,

eating of meat, and drinking of wine—

“Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die!”

14 The Lord of Hosts has directly revealed to me:

“This sin of yours will never be wiped out.”

The Lord God of Hosts has spoken.

11 You made a reservoir between the two walls for the water of the old pool. But you did not look to him who did it or have regard for him who planned it long ago.

12 On that day the Lord God of hosts

called for weeping and mourning,

for baldness and putting on sackcloth,

13 but instead there was joy and festivity,

killing oxen and slaughtering sheep,

eating meat and drinking wine.

“Let us eat and drink,

for tomorrow we die.”

14 The Lord of hosts has revealed himself in my ears:

“Surely this iniquity will not be forgiven you until you die,”

says the Lord God of hosts.

11 And you made a reservoir between the walls for the waters of the old pool,

but you did not look to its maker,

and you did not see the one who created it long ago.

12 And the Lord, Yahweh of hosts, called on that day

for weeping and mourning,

and for baldness and girding with sackcloth.

13 But look! Joy and gladness,

the killing of oxen and the slaughtering of sheep,

the eating of meat and the drinking of wine!

“Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die!”

14 And it was revealed in my ears by Yahweh of hosts:

“Surely this sin will not be atoned for you until you die!”

says the Lord, Yahweh of hosts.

11 You built a pool between the two walls.

You used it to save the water

that was running down from the Old Pool.

But you didn’t look to the One who made it all possible.

You didn’t pay any attention to the One

who planned everything long ago.

12 The Lord who rules over all

called out to you at that time.

The Lord told you to sob and cry.

He told you to tear your hair out.

And he told you to put black clothes on.

13 Instead, you are enjoying yourselves at wild parties!

You are killing cattle and sheep.

You are eating their meat and drinking wine.

You are saying, “Let’s eat and drink,

because tomorrow we’ll die.”

14 I heard the Lord who rules over all speaking. “Your sin can never be paid for as long as you people live,” says the Lord.

11 And you made a reservoir between the two walls

For the waters of the old pool.

But you did not depend on Him who made it,

Nor did you take into consideration Him who planned it long ago.

12 Therefore in that day the Lord God of hosts called you to weeping, to wailing,

To shaving the head and to wearing sackcloth.

13 Instead, there is gaiety and gladness,

Killing of cattle and slaughtering of sheep,

Eating of meat and drinking of wine:

“Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we may die.”

14 But the Lord of hosts revealed Himself to me,

“Surely this iniquity shall not be forgiven you

Until you die,” says the Lord God of hosts.
