Isaiah 17:4–8

4 “In that day the glory of Jacob will fade;

the fat of his body will waste away.

5 It will be as when reapers harvest the standing grain,

gathering the grain in their arms—

as when someone gleans heads of grain

in the Valley of Rephaim.

6 Yet some gleanings will remain,

as when an olive tree is beaten,

leaving two or three olives on the topmost branches,

four or five on the fruitful boughs,”

declares the Lord, the God of Israel.

7 In that day people will look to their Maker

and turn their eyes to the Holy One of Israel.

8 They will not look to the altars,

the work of their hands,

and they will have no regard for the Asherah poles

and the incense altars their fingers have made.

4 And in that day it shall come to pass,

That the glory of Jacob shall be made thin,

And the fatness of his flesh shall wax lean.

5 And it shall be as when the harvestman gathereth the corn,

And reapeth the ears with his arm;

And it shall be as he that gathereth ears in the valley of Rephaim.

6 Yet gleaning grapes shall be left in it, as the shaking of an olive tree,

Two or three berries in the top of the uppermost bough,

Four or five in the outmost fruitful branches thereof,

Saith the Lord God of Israel.

7 At that day shall a man look to his Maker,

And his eyes shall have respect to the Holy One of Israel.

8 And he shall not look to the altars, the work of his hands,

Neither shall respect that which his fingers have made,

Either the groves, or the images.

4 “In that day Israel’s glory will grow dim;

its robust body will waste away.

5 The whole land will look like a grainfield

after the harvesters have gathered the grain.

It will be desolate,

like the fields in the valley of Rephaim after the harvest.

6 Only a few of its people will be left,

like stray olives left on a tree after the harvest.

Only two or three remain in the highest branches,

four or five scattered here and there on the limbs,”

declares the Lord, the God of Israel.

7 Then at last the people will look to their Creator

and turn their eyes to the Holy One of Israel.

8 They will no longer look to their idols for help

or worship what their own hands have made.

They will never again bow down to their Asherah poles

or worship at the pagan shrines they have built.

4 “In that day it shall come to pass

That the glory of Jacob will wane,

And the fatness of his flesh grow lean.

5 It shall be as when the harvester gathers the grain,

And reaps the heads with his arm;

It shall be as he who gathers heads of grain

In the Valley of Rephaim.

6 Yet gleaning grapes will be left in it,

Like the shaking of an olive tree,

Two or three olives at the top of the uppermost bough,

Four or five in its most fruitful branches,”

Says the Lord God of Israel.

7 In that day a man will look to his Maker,

And his eyes will have respect for the Holy One of Israel.

8 He will not look to the altars,

The work of his hands;

He will not respect what his fingers have made,

Nor the wooden images nor the incense altars.

4 “At that time Israel’s wealth will all be gone.

Israel will be like someone who has lost much weight from sickness.

5 That time will be like the grain harvest in the Valley of Rephaim.

The workers cut the wheat.

Then they cut the heads of grain from the plants

and collect the grain.

6 That time will also be like the olive harvest,

when a few olives are left.

Two or three olives are left in the top branches.

Four or five olives are left on full branches,” says the Lord, the God of Israel.

7 At that time people will look to God, their Maker;

their eyes will see the Holy One of Israel.

8 They will not trust the altars they have made,

nor will they trust what their hands have made,

not even the Asherah idols and altars.

4 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the glory of Jacob shall be made thin, and the fatness of his flesh shall wax lean. 5 And it shall be as when the harvestman gathereth the standing grain, and his arm reapeth the ears; yea, it shall be as when one gleaneth ears in the valley of Rephaim. 6 Yet there shall be left therein gleanings, as the shaking of an olive-tree, two or three berries in the top of the uppermost bough, four or five in the outmost branches of a fruitful tree, saith Jehovah, the God of Israel. 7 In that day shall men look unto their Maker, and their eyes shall have respect to the Holy One of Israel. 8 And they shall not look to the altars, the work of their hands; neither shall they have respect to that which their fingers have made, either the Asherim, or the sun-images.

4 And in that day it shall come to pass, that the glory of Jacob shall be made thin, and the fatness of his flesh shall become lean. 5 And it shall be as when the reaper gathereth the corn, and reapeth the ears with his arm; yea, it shall be as he that gathereth ears in the valley of Rephaim.

6 And a gleaning shall be left in it, as at the shaking of an olive-tree: two, three berries above, in the tree-top; four, five in its fruitful boughs, saith Jehovah, the God of Israel. 7 In that day shall man look to his Maker, and his eyes shall have regard to the Holy One of Israel. 8 And he will not look to the altars, the work of his hands, nor have regard to what his fingers have made, neither the Asherahs nor the sun-images.

4 “When that day comes, the honor of Jacob’s people will fade away, 

and they will become skin and bones. 

5 That time will be like harvesting bundles of grain by the armful. 

It will be like gathering grain in the Rephaim Valley. 

6 Only a few people will survive. 

They will be like an olive tree that has been beaten. 

Only two or three olives are left 

at the top of the highest branch, 

four or five olives on the rest of the branches,” 

declares the Lord God of Israel. 

7 When that day comes, they will look to their maker, 

and their eyes will look to the Holy One of Israel. 

8 They won’t look to the altars made by their hands 

or to the Asherah poles or incense altars 

which their fingers molded. 

4 On that day

the splendor of Jacob will fade,

and his healthy body will become emaciated.

5 It will be as if a reaper had gathered standing grain—

his arm harvesting the heads of grain—

and as if one had gleaned heads of grain

in the Valley of Rephaim.

6 Only gleanings will be left in Israel,

as if an olive tree had been beaten—

two or three berries at the very top of the tree,

four or five on its fruitful branches.

This is the declaration of the Lord,

the God of Israel.

7 On that day people will look to their Maker and will turn their eyes to the Holy One of Israel. 8 They will not look to the altars they made with their hands or to the Asherahs and incense altars they made with their fingers.

4 On that day

the glory of Jacob will be brought low,

and the fat of his flesh will grow lean.

5 And it shall be as when reapers gather standing grain

and their arms harvest the ears,

and as when one gleans the ears of grain

in the Valley of Rephaim.

6 Gleanings will be left in it,

as when an olive tree is beaten—

two or three berries

in the top of the highest bough,

four or five

on the branches of a fruit tree,

says the Lord God of Israel.

7 On that day people will look to their Maker, with their eyes on the Holy One of Israel; 8 they will not have regard for the altars, the work of their hands, and they will not look to what their own fingers have made, either the sacred poles or the altars of incense.

4 “And this shall happen:

On that day, the glory of Jacob will be brought low,

and the fat of his flesh will become lean.

5 And it shall be as when a reaper gathers standing grain

and he reaps grain with his arm,

and it shall be like one who gathers ears of grain

in the valley of Rephaim.

6 And gleanings will be left over in it, as when an olive tree is beaten,

two or three ripe olive berries in the top of a branch,

four or five on its fruitful branches,”

declares Yahweh, the God of Israel.

7 On that day, mankind will look to its maker,

and its eyes will look to the holy one of Israel;

8 it will not look to the altars,

the work of its hands,

and it will not see what its fingers made

and the poles of Asherah worship and the incense altars.

4 “In days to come, the glory of Jacob’s people will fade.

Their strength will get weaker and weaker.

5 It will be as when a worker cuts and gathers grain

in the Valley of Rephaim.

He gathers up stalks with his arms.

Only a few heads of grain are left.

6 In the same way, only a few people will be left alive.

It will be as when workers knock olives off the trees.

Only two or three olives are left on the highest branches.

Four or five at most are left on the limbs that produce fruit,”

announces the Lord, the God of Israel.

7 In days to come, men will look to their Maker for help.

They will turn their eyes to the Holy One of Israel.

8 They won’t trust in the altars

they made with their own hands.

They won’t pay any attention to the poles they used

to worship the goddess Asherah.

And they won’t depend on the incense altars

they made with their own fingers.

4 Now in that day the glory of Jacob will fade,

And the fatness of his flesh will become lean.

5 It will be even like the reaper gathering the standing grain,

As his arm harvests the ears,

Or it will be like one gleaning ears of grain

In the valley of Rephaim.

6 Yet gleanings will be left in it like the shaking of an olive tree,

Two or three olives on the topmost bough,

Four or five on the branches of a fruitful tree,

Declares the Lord, the God of Israel.

7 In that day man will have regard for his Maker

And his eyes will look to the Holy One of Israel.

8 He will not have regard for the altars, the work of his hands,

Nor will he look to that which his fingers have made,

Even the Asherim and incense stands.
