Ecclesiastes 4:15–16 — New International Version (2011) (NIV)
15 I saw that all who lived and walked under the sun followed the youth, the king’s successor. 16 There was no end to all the people who were before them. But those who came later were not pleased with the successor. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.
Ecclesiastes 4:15–16 — King James Version (KJV 1900)
15 I considered all the living which walk under the sun, with the second child that shall stand up in his stead. 16 There is no end of all the people, even of all that have been before them: they also that come after shall not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and vexation of spirit.
Ecclesiastes 4:15–16 — New Living Translation (NLT)
15 But then everyone rushes to the side of yet another youth who replaces him. 16 Endless crowds stand around him, but then another generation grows up and rejects him, too. So it is all meaningless—like chasing the wind.
Ecclesiastes 4:15–16 — The New King James Version (NKJV)
15 I saw all the living who walk under the sun;
They were with the second youth who stands in his place.
16 There was no end of all the people over whom he was made king;
Yet those who come afterward will not rejoice in him.
Surely this also is vanity and grasping for the wind.
Ecclesiastes 4:15–16 — New Century Version (NCV)
15 I watched all the people who live on earth follow him and make him their king. 16 Many followed him at first, but later, they did not like him, either. So fame and power are useless, like chasing the wind.
Ecclesiastes 4:15–16 — American Standard Version (ASV)
15 I saw all the living that walk under the sun, that they were with the youth, the second, that stood up in his stead. 16 There was no end of all the people, even of all them over whom he was: yet they that come after shall not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and a striving after wind.
Ecclesiastes 4:15–16 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)
15 I saw all the living that walk under the sun, with the child, the second, that should stand up in his stead. 16 There is no end of all the people, of all that stood before them; those however that come after shall not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and a striving after the wind.
Ecclesiastes 4:15–16 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)
15 I saw all living people moving about under the sun. They sided with the second young man, the king’s successor. 16 There was no end to all those people, everyone whom he led.But those who will come later will not be happy with the successor. Even this is pointless. ⸤It’s like⸥ trying to catch the wind.
Ecclesiastes 4:15–16 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)
15 I saw all the living, who move about under the sun, follow a second youth who succeeds him. 16 There is no limit to all the people who were before them, yet those who come later will not rejoice in him. This too is futile and a pursuit of the wind.
Ecclesiastes 4:15–16 — New Revised Standard Version: Updated Edition (NRSVue)
15 I saw all the living who, moving about under the sun, follow that youth who replaced the king; 16 there was no end to all those people whom he led. Yet those who come later will not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and a chasing after wind.
Ecclesiastes 4:15–16 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)
15 I saw all the living who move about under the sun with the youth; the second who will stand in his place. 16 There is no end to all the people, to all who were before him. Yet the later generation will not rejoice in him, for this also is vanity and chasing wind!
Ecclesiastes 4:15–16 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)
15 I saw that everyone was following the young man who had become the new king.
16 At first, all of the people served him when he became king. But those who came later weren’t pleased with the way he was ruling. That doesn’t have any meaning either. It’s like chasing the wind.
Ecclesiastes 4:15–16 — New American Standard Bible (1995) (NASB95)
15 I have seen all the living under the sun throng to the side of the second lad who replaces him.
16 There is no end to all the people, to all who were before them, and even the ones who will come later will not be happy with him, for this too is vanity and striving after wind.
