2 Samuel 1:20–21

20 “Tell it not in Gath,

proclaim it not in the streets of Ashkelon,

lest the daughters of the Philistines be glad,

lest the daughters of the uncircumcised rejoice.

21 “Mountains of Gilboa,

may you have neither dew nor rain,

may no showers fall on your terraced fields.

For there the shield of the mighty was despised,

the shield of Saul—no longer rubbed with oil.

20 Tell it not in Gath,

Publish it not in the streets of Askelon;

Lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice,

Lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph.

21 Ye mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew,

Neither let there be rain, upon you, nor fields of offerings:

For there the shield of the mighty is vilely cast away,

The shield of Saul, as though he had not been anointed with oil.

20 Don’t announce the news in Gath,

don’t proclaim it in the streets of Ashkelon,

or the daughters of the Philistines will rejoice

and the pagans will laugh in triumph.

21 O mountains of Gilboa,

let there be no dew or rain upon you,

nor fruitful fields producing offerings of grain.

For there the shield of the mighty heroes was defiled;

the shield of Saul will no longer be anointed with oil.

20 Tell it not in Gath,

Proclaim it not in the streets of Ashkelon—

Lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice,

Lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph.

21 “O mountains of Gilboa,

Let there be no dew nor rain upon you,

Nor fields of offerings.

For the shield of the mighty is cast away there!

The shield of Saul, not anointed with oil.

20 Don’t tell it in Gath.

Don’t announce it in the streets of Ashkelon.

If you do, the Philistine women will be happy.

The daughters of the Philistines will rejoice.

21 “May there be no dew or rain on the mountains of Gilboa,

and may their fields produce no grain,

because there the mighty warrior’s shield was dishonored.

Saul’s shield will no longer be rubbed with oil.

20 Tell it not in Gath,

Publish it not in the streets of Ashkelon;

Lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice,

Lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph.

21 Ye mountains of Gilboa,

Let there be no dew nor rain upon you, neither fields of offerings:

20 Tell it not in Gath, carry not the tidings in the streets of Ashkelon; Lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, Lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph. 21 Ye mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew, no rain upon you, nor fields of heave-offerings! For there the shield of the mighty was vilely cast away, The shield of Saul, as not anointed with oil.

20 Don’t tell the news in Gath. 

Don’t announce the victory in the streets of Ashkelon, 

or the daughters of the Philistines will be glad, 

and the daughters of godless men will celebrate. 

21 You mountains in Gilboa, 

may there be no dew or rain on you 

or on your slopes, 

because warriors’ shields were tarnished there. 

Saul’s shield was never rubbed with olive oil. 

20 Do not tell it in Gath,

don’t announce it in the marketplaces of Ashkelon,

or the daughters of the Philistines will rejoice,

and the daughters of the uncircumcised will gloat.

21 Mountains of Gilboa,

let no dew or rain be on you,

or fields of offerings,

for there the shield of the mighty was defiled —

the shield of Saul, no longer anointed with oil.

20 Tell it not in Gath;

proclaim it not in the streets of Ashkelon,

or the daughters of the Philistines will rejoice;

the daughters of the uncircumcised will exult.

21 You mountains of Gilboa,

let there be no dew or rain upon you

nor bounteous fields!

For there the shield of the mighty was defiled,

the shield of Saul, anointed with oil no more.

20 Do not tell it in Gath; do not proclaim it in the streets of Ashkelon,

lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice,

lest the daughters of the uncircumcised exult.

21 O mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew or rain upon you

or on the fields of grain for offerings,

for there the small shield of the mighty was defiled,

the small shield of Saul was not anointed with oil.

20 “Don’t announce it in Gath.

Don’t tell it in the streets of Ashkelon.

If you do, the daughters of the Philistines will be glad.

The daughters of men who haven’t been circumcised will be joyful.

21 “Mountains of Gilboa,

may no dew or rain fall on you.

May your fields not produce any offerings of grain.

The shield of the mighty king lies polluted there.

The shield of Saul lies there. It isn’t rubbed with oil anymore.

20 “Tell it not in Gath,

Or the daughters of the Philistines will rejoice,

The daughters of the uncircumcised will exult.

21 “O mountains of Gilboa,

Let not dew or rain be on you, nor fields of offerings;
