1 Peter 2:7–8 — The New International Version (NIV)

Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe,

“The stone the builders rejected

has become the cornerstone,”

and,

“A stone that causes people to stumble

and a rock that makes them fall.”

They stumble because they disobey the message—which is also what they were destined for.

1 Peter 2:7–8 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner, And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.

1 Peter 2:7–8 — New Living Translation (NLT)

Yes, you who trust him recognize the honor God has given him. But for those who reject him,

“The stone that the builders rejected

has now become the cornerstone.”

And,

“He is the stone that makes people stumble,

the rock that makes them fall.”

They stumble because they do not obey God’s word, and so they meet the fate that was planned for them.

1 Peter 2:7–8 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

Therefore, to you who believe, He is precious; but to those who are disobedient,

“The stone which the builders rejected

Has become the chief cornerstone,”

and

“A stone of stumbling

And a rock of offense.”

They stumble, being disobedient to the word, to which they also were appointed.

1 Peter 2:7–8 — New Century Version (NCV)

This stone is worth much to you who believe. But to the people who do not believe,

“the stone that the builders rejected

has become the cornerstone.”

Also, he is

“a stone that causes people to stumble,

a rock that makes them fall.”

They stumble because they do not obey what God says, which is what God planned to happen to them.

1 Peter 2:7–8 — American Standard Version (ASV)

For you therefore that believe is the preciousness: but for such as disbelieve,

The stone which the builders rejected,

The same was made the head of the corner;

and,

A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence;

for they stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.

1 Peter 2:7–8 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

To you therefore who believe is the preciousness; but to the disobedient, the stone which the builders cast away as worthless, this is become head of the corner, and a stone of stumbling and rock of offence; who stumble at the word, being disobedient to which also they have been appointed.

1 Peter 2:7–8 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

This honor belongs to those who believe. But to those who don’t believe:

“The stone that the builders rejected

has become the cornerstone,

a stone that people trip over,

a large rock that people find offensive.”

The people tripped over the word because they refused to believe it. Therefore, this is how they ended up.

1 Peter 2:7–8 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

So honor will come to you who believe, but for the unbelieving,

The stone that the builders rejected—

this One has become the cornerstone,

and

A stone to stumble over,

and a rock to trip over.

They stumble because they disobey the message; they were destined for this.

1 Peter 2:7–8 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

To you then who believe, he is precious; but for those who do not believe,

“The stone that the builders rejected

has become the very head of the corner,”

and

“A stone that makes them stumble,

and a rock that makes them fall.”

They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.

1 Peter 2:7–8 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

Therefore the honor is for you who believe, but for those who refuse to believe,

“The stone that the builders rejected,

this one has become the cornerstone,”

and

“A stone of stumbling and a rock of offense,”

who stumble because they disobey the word to which also they were consigned.

1 Peter 2:7–8 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

The stone is very valuable to you who believe. But to people who do not believe,

“The stone the builders did not accept

has become the most important stone of all.”

And,

“It is a stone that causes people to trip.

It is a rock that makes them fall.”

They trip and fall because they do not obey the message. That is also what God planned for them.

1 Peter 2:7–8 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

This precious value, then, is for you who believe; but for those who disbelieve,

The stone which the builders rejected,

This became the very corner stone,

and,

“A stone of stumbling and a rock of offense”;

for they stumble because they are disobedient to the word, and to this doom they were also appointed.
