47As he yet spoke, behold Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the ancients of the people.

48And he that betrayed him gave them a sign, saying: Whomsoever I shall kiss, that is he. Hold him fast.

49And forthwith coming to Jesus, he said: Hail, Rabbi. And he kissed him.

50And Jesus said to him: Friend, whereto art thou come? Then they came up and laid hands on Jesus and held him.

His betrayer had given them a sign: “The one I kiss, he’s the one; arrest him.” So immediately he went up to Jesus and said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” and kissed him.

“Friend,” Jesus asked him, “why have you come?”

Then they came up, took hold of Jesus, and arrested him.

NLTNew Living Translation

And even as Jesus said this, Judas, one of the twelve disciples, arrived with a crowd of men armed with swords and clubs. They had been sent by the leading priests and elders of the people. The traitor, Judas, had given them a prearranged signal: “You will know which one to arrest when I greet him with a kiss.” So Judas came straight to Jesus. “Greetings, Rabbi!” he exclaimed and gave him the kiss.

Jesus said, “My friend, go ahead and do what you have come for.”

Then the others grabbed Jesus and arrested him.

And Jesus said to him, “Friend, do that for which you have come.” Then they came up and laid hands on Jesus and arrested him.

And while he yet spake, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and elders of the people. Now he that betrayed him gave them a sign, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he: hold him fast. And forthwith he came to Jesus, and said, Hail, master; and kissed him. And Jesus said unto him, Friend, wherefore art thou come? Then came they, and laid hands on Jesus, and took him.
