Hebrews 1:3–9

3 The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. 4 So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.

5 For to which of the angels did God ever say,

“You are my Son;

today I have become your Father”?

Or again,

“I will be his Father,

and he will be my Son”?

6 And again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says,

“Let all God’s angels worship him.”

7 In speaking of the angels he says,

“He makes his angels spirits,

and his servants flames of fire.”

8 But about the Son he says,

“Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever;

a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.

9 You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness;

therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions

by anointing you with the oil of joy.”

Or again,

“I will be to him a father,

and he shall be to me a son”?

6 And again, when he brings the firstborn into the world, he says,

“Let all God’s angels worship him.”

7 Of the angels he says,

“He makes his angels winds,

and his ministers a flame of fire.”

8 But of the Son he says,

“Your throne, O God, is forever and ever,

the scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom.

9 You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness;

therefore God, your God, has anointed you

with the oil of gladness beyond your companions.”

3 Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high; 4 Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. 5 For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son? 6 And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him. 7 And of the angels he saith, Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire. 8 But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom. 9 Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.

3 The Son radiates God’s own glory and expresses the very character of God, and he sustains everything by the mighty power of his command. When he had cleansed us from our sins, he sat down in the place of honor at the right hand of the majestic God in heaven. 4 This shows that the Son is far greater than the angels, just as the name God gave him is greater than their names.

5 For God never said to any angel what he said to Jesus:

“You are my Son.

Today I have become your Father.”

God also said,

“I will be his Father,

and he will be my Son.”

6 And when he brought his supreme Son into the world, God said,

“Let all of God’s angels worship him.”

7 Regarding the angels, he says,

“He sends his angels like the winds,

his servants like flames of fire.”

8 But to the Son he says,

“Your throne, O God, endures forever and ever.

You rule with a scepter of justice.

9 You love justice and hate evil.

Therefore, O God, your God has anointed you,

pouring out the oil of joy on you more than on anyone else.”

“Your throne, O God, is forever and ever;

A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom.

9 You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness;

Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You

With the oil of gladness more than Your companions.”

3 The Son reflects the glory of God and shows exactly what God is like. He holds everything together with his powerful word. When the Son made people clean from their sins, he sat down at the right side of God, the Great One in heaven. 4 The Son became much greater than the angels, and God gave him a name that is much greater than theirs.

5 This is because God never said to any of the angels,

“You are my Son.

Today I have become your Father.”

Nor did God say of any angel,

“I will be his Father,

and he will be my Son.”

6 And when God brings his firstborn Son into the world, he says,

“Let all God’s angels worship him.”

7 This is what God said about the angels:

“God makes his angels become like winds.

He makes his servants become like flames of fire.”

8 But God said this about his Son:

“God, your throne will last forever and ever.

You will rule your kingdom with fairness.

9 You love right and hate evil,

so God has chosen you from among your friends;

he has set you apart with much joy.”

3 who being the effulgence of his glory, and the very image of his substance, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had made purification of sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high; 4 having become by so much better than the angels, as he hath inherited a more excellent name than they. 5 For unto which of the angels said he at any time,

Thou art my Son,

This day have I begotten thee?

and again,

I will be to him a Father,

And he shall be to me a Son?

6 And when he again bringeth in the firstborn into the world he saith,

And let all the angels of God worship him.

7 And of the angels he saith,

Who maketh his angels winds,

And his ministers a flame of fire:

8 but of the Son he saith,

Thy throne, O God, is forever and ever;

And the sceptre of uprightness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.

9 Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity;

Therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee

With the oil of gladness above thy fellows.

3 who being the effulgence of his glory and the expression of his substance, and upholding all things by the word of his power, having made by himself the purification of sins, set himself down on the right hand of the greatness on high,

4 taking a place by so much better than the angels, as he inherits a name more excellent than they. 5 For to which of the angels said he ever, Thou art my Son: this day have I begotten thee? and again, I will be to him for father, and he shall be to me for son? 6 and again, when he brings in the firstborn into the habitable world, he says, And let all God’s angels worship him. 7 And as to the angels he says, Who makes his angels spirits and his ministers a flame of fire; 8 but as to the Son, Thy throne, O God, is to the age of the age, and a sceptre of uprightness is the sceptre of thy kingdom. 9 Thou hast loved righteousness and hast hated lawlessness; therefore God, thy God, has anointed thee with oil of gladness above thy companions.

3 His Son is the reflection of God’s glory and the exact likeness of God’s being. He holds everything together through his powerful words. After he had cleansed people from their sins, he now holds the honored position—the one next to the majestic God [the Father] on the heavenly throne. 

4 The Son has become greater than the angels since he has been given a name that is superior to theirs. 5 God never said to any of his angels, 

“You are my Son. 

Today I have become your Father.” 

And God never said to any of his angels, 

“I will be his Father, 

and he will be my Son.” 

6 When God was about to send his firstborn Son into the world, he said, 

“All of God’s angels must worship him.” 

7 God said about the angels, 

“He makes his messengers winds. 

He makes his servants flames of fire.” 

8 But God said about his Son, 

“Your throne, O God, is forever and ever. 

The scepter in your kingdom is a scepter for justice. 

9 You have loved what is right and hated what is wrong. 

That is why God, your God, 

anointed you, rather than your companions, with the oil of joy.”

He makes His angels winds,

and His servants a fiery flame,

8 but to the Son:

Your throne, God,

is forever and ever,

and the scepter of Your kingdom

is a scepter of justice.

9 You have loved righteousness

and hated lawlessness;

this is why God, Your God,

has anointed You

with the oil of joy

rather than Your companions.

When he had made purification for sins through him, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4 having become by so much better than the angels, by as much as he has inherited a more excellent name than theirs.

5 For to which of the angels did he ever say,

“You are my son,

today I have begotten you,”

and again,

“I will be his father,

and he will be my son”?

6 And again, when he brings the firstborn into the world, he says,

“And let all the angels of God worship him.”

7 And concerning the angels he says,

“The one who makes his angels winds,

and his servants a flame of fire,”

8 but concerning the Son,

“Your throne, O God, is forever and ever,

and the scepter of righteous is the scepter of your kingdom.

9 You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness;

because of this God, your God, has anointed you

with the olive oil of joy more than your companions.

3 The Son is the gleaming brightness of God’s glory. He is the exact likeness of God’s being. He uses his powerful word to hold all things together. He provided the way for people to be made pure from sin. Then he sat down at the right hand of the King, the Majesty in heaven. 4 So he became higher than the angels. The name he received is more excellent than theirs.

5 God never said to any of the angels,

“You are my Son.

Today I have become your Father.”

Or,

“I will be his Father.

And he will be my Son.”

6 God’s first and only Son is over all things. When God brings him into the world, he says,

“Let all of God’s angels worship him.”

7 Here is something else God says about the angels.

“God makes his angels to be like winds.

He makes those who serve him to be like flashes of lightning.”

8 But here is what he says about the Son.

“You are God. Your throne will last for ever and ever.

Your kingdom will be ruled by what is right.

9 You have loved what is right and hated what is evil.

So your God has placed you above your companions.

He has filled you with joy by pouring the sacred oil on your head.”

4 having become as much better than the angels, as He has inherited a more excellent name than they.

5 For to which of the angels did He ever say,

“You are My Son,

“I will be a Father to Him

And He shall be a Son to Me”?

6 And when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says,

“And let all the angels of God worship Him.”

7 And of the angels He says,

“Who makes His angels winds,

And His ministers a flame of fire.”

8 But of the Son He says,

“Your throne, O God, is forever and ever,

And the righteous scepter is the scepter of His kingdom.

9 “You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness;

Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You

With the oil of gladness above Your companions.”
