Nehemiah 5:1–6:19
5 There was a widespread outcry from the people and their wives against their Jewish countrymen. 2 Some were saying, “We, our sons, and our daughters are numerous. Let us get grain so that we can eat and live.” 3 Others were saying, “We are mortgaging our fields, vineyards, and homes to get grain during the famine.”h 4 Still others were saying, “We have borrowed money to pay the king’s taxi on our fields and vineyards.j 5 We and our children are just like our countrymen and their children, yet we are subjecting our sons and daughters to slavery.k Some of our daughters are already enslaved,l but we are powerlessE because our fields and vineyards belong to others.”
6 I became extremely angrym when I heard their outcry and these complaints. 7 After seriously considering the matter, I accused the nobles and officials, saying to them, “Each of you is charging his countrymen interest.”n So I called a large assembly against them 8 and said, “We have done our best to buy back our Jewish countrymen who were sold to foreigners, but now you sell your own countrymen, and we have to buy them back.”o They remained silent and could not say a word.p 9 Then I said, “What you are doing isn’t right. Shouldn’t you walk in the fear of our Godq and not invite the reproach of our foreign enemies?r 10 Even I, as well as my brothers and my servants, have been lending them money and grain. Please, let’s stop charging this interest.F 11 Return their fields, vineyards, olive groves, and houses to them immediately, along with the percentageG of the money, grain, new wine, and fresh oils that you have been assessing them.”
12 They responded, “We will return these things and require nothing more from them.t We will do as you say.”
So I summoned the priests and made everyone take an oathu to do this. 13 I also shook the folds of my robe and said, “May God likewise shake from his house and property everyone who doesn’t keep this promise. May he be shaken outv and have nothing!”
The whole assembly said, “Amen,” and they praised the Lord. Then the people did as they had promised.w
14 Furthermore, from the day King Artaxerxesx appointed me to be their governor in the land of Judah—from the twentieth year until his thirty-second year, twelve yearsy—I and my associates never ate from the food allotted to the governor. 15 The governorsz who preceded me had heavily burdened the people, taking from them food and wine as well as a poundH of silver. Their subordinates also oppressed the people, but because of the fear of God, I didn’t do this.a 16 Instead, I devoted myself to the construction of this wall,b and all my subordinates were gathered there for the work. We didn’t buy any land.c
17 There were 150 Jews and officials, as well as guests from the surrounding nations at my table.d 18 EachA day, one ox, six choice sheep, and some fowl were prepared for me. An abundance of all kinds of wine was provided every ten days.e But I didn’t demand the food allotted to the governor, because the burden on the people was so heavy.
19 Remember me favorably, my God, for all that I have done for this people.f
ATTEMPTS TO DISCOURAGE THE BUILDERS
6 When Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem the Arab, and the rest of our enemiesg heard that I had rebuilt the wall and that no gap was left in ith—though at that time I had not installed the doors in the city gatesi—2 Sanballat and Geshemj sent me a message: “Come, let’s meet together in the villages ofB the Ono Valley.”k They were planning to harm me.
3 So I sent messengers to them, saying, “I am doing important work and cannot come down. Why should the work cease while I leave it and go down to you?” 4 Four times they sent me the same proposal, and I gave them the same reply.
5 Sanballatl sent me this same message a fifth time by his aide, who had an open letter in his hand. 6 In it was written:
It is reported among the nations—and GeshemC,m agrees—that you and the Jews plan to rebel. This is the reason you are building the wall. According to these reports, you are to become their king 7 and have even set up the prophets in Jerusalem to proclaim on your behalf, “There is a king in Judah.”n These rumors will be heard by the king. So come, let’s confer together.
8 Then I replied to him, “There is nothing to these rumors you are spreading; you are inventing them in your own mind.”o 9 For they were all trying to intimidatep us, saying, “They will drop their hands fromD the work,q and it will never be finished.”
But now, my God, strengthen my hands.r
ATTEMPTS TO INTIMIDATE NEHEMIAH
10 I went to the house of Shemaiah son of Delaiah, son of Mehetabel, who was restricted to his house. He said:
Let’s meet at the house of God,
inside the temple.
Let’s shut the temple doors
because they’re coming to kill you.
They’re coming to kill you tonight!E
11 But I said, “Should a man like me run away? How can someone like me enter the temple and live?s I will not go.” 12 I realized that God had not sent him, because of the prophecy he spoke against me. Tobiah and Sanballatt had hired him. 13 He was hired, so that I would be intimidated,u do as he suggested, sin, and get a bad reputation, in order that they could discredit me.
14 My God, rememberv Tobiah and Sanballat for what they have done, and also the prophetess Noadiahw and the other prophets who wanted to intimidate me.
15 The wall was completedx in fifty-two days, on the twenty-fifth day of the month Elul.y 16 When all our enemiesz heard this, all the surrounding nations were intimidatedaa and lost their confidence,F for they realized that this task had been accomplished by our God.ab
17 During those days, the nobles of Judah sent many letters to Tobiah,ac and Tobiah’s letters came to them. 18 For many in Judah were bound by oathad to him, since he was a son-in-law of Shecaniah son of Arah, and his son Jehohanan had married the daughter of Meshullamae son of Berechiah. 19 These nobles kept mentioning Tobiah’s good deeds to me, and they reported my words to him. And Tobiah sent letters to intimidateaf me.
