Luke 4:1–20
4 Then Jesusa left the Jordan,b full of the Holy Spirit,c and was led by the Spiritd in the wilderness 2 for forty dayse to be tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and when they were over, he was hungry. 3 The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.”
4 But Jesus answered him, “It is written: Man must not live on bread alone.”D,E,f
5 So he took him upF and showed him all the kingdoms of the worldg in a moment of time. 6 The devil said to him, “I will give you their splendor and all this authority, because it has been given over to me,h and I can give it to anyone I want. 7 If you, then, will worship me,G all will be yours.”
8 And Jesus answered him,H “It is written: Worship the Lord your God, and servei him only.”I
9 So he took him to Jerusalem, had him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here. 10 For it is written:
He will give his angels orders concerning you,
they will support you with their hands,
so that you will not strike
your foot against a stone.”K,k
12 And Jesus answered him, “It is said: Do not test the Lord your God.”L,l
13 After the devil had finished every temptation, he departed from him for a time.
14 Then Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit,m and news about him spread throughout the entire vicinity.n 15 He was teaching in their synagogues,o being praisedM by everyone.
16 He came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up.p As usual, he entered the synagogue on the Sabbath dayq and stood up to read.r 17 The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him, and unrolling the scroll, he found the place where it was written:
18 The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
because he has anointed me
to preach good news to the poor.
He has sent meA
to proclaim releaseB to the captives
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to set free the oppressed,
19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.C,s
20 He then rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down.t And the eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fixed on him.
