1 Maccabees 1:29–32

Apocrypha of the Old TestamentOther versions

After the lapse of two years the king sent a chief collector of tribute to the cities of Judah; and he came to Jerusalem with a great host. And he spoke unto them peaceful words in subtilty, so that they had confidence in him; but he fell upon the city suddenly, and smote it with a grievous stroke, and destroyed much people in Israel. And he took the spoils of the city, and burned it with fire, and pulled down the houses thereof and the walls thereof round about. And they led captive the women and the children, and took possession of the cattle.
