Jeremiah 47:4–7 — The New International Version (NIV)

For the day has come

to destroy all the Philistines

and to remove all survivors

who could help Tyre and Sidon.

The Lord is about to destroy the Philistines,

the remnant from the coasts of Caphtor.

Gaza will shave her head in mourning;

Ashkelon will be silenced.

You remnant on the plain,

how long will you cut yourselves?

“ ‘Alas, sword of the Lord,

how long till you rest?

Return to your sheath;

cease and be still.’

But how can it rest

when the Lord has commanded it,

when he has ordered it

to attack Ashkelon and the coast?”

Jeremiah 47:4–7 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

Because of the day that cometh to spoil all the Philistines,

And to cut off from Tyrus and Zidon every helper that remaineth:

For the Lord will spoil the Philistines,

The remnant of the country of Caphtor.

Baldness is come upon Gaza;

Ashkelon is cut off with the remnant of their valley:

How long wilt thou cut thyself?

O thou sword of the Lord, how long will it be ere thou be quiet?

Put up thyself into thy scabbard, rest, and be still.

How can it be quiet, seeing the Lord hath given it a charge

Against Ashkelon, and against the sea shore? there hath he appointed it.

Jeremiah 47:4–7 — New Living Translation (NLT)

“The time has come for the Philistines to be destroyed,

along with their allies from Tyre and Sidon.

Yes, the Lord is destroying the remnant of the Philistines,

those colonists from the island of Crete.

Gaza will be humiliated, its head shaved bald;

Ashkelon will lie silent.

You remnant from the Mediterranean coast,

how long will you cut yourselves in mourning?

“Now, O sword of the Lord,

when will you be at rest again?

Go back into your sheath;

rest and be still.

“But how can it be still

when the Lord has sent it on a mission?

For the city of Ashkelon

and the people living along the sea

must be destroyed.”

Jeremiah 47:4–7 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

Because of the day that comes to plunder all the Philistines,

To cut off from Tyre and Sidon every helper who remains;

For the Lord shall plunder the Philistines,

The remnant of the country of Caphtor.

Baldness has come upon Gaza,

Ashkelon is cut off

With the remnant of their valley.

How long will you cut yourself?

“O you sword of the Lord,

How long until you are quiet?

Put yourself up into your scabbard,

Rest and be still!

How can it be quiet,

Seeing the Lord has given it a charge

Against Ashkelon and against the seashore?

There He has appointed it.”

Jeremiah 47:4–7 — New Century Version (NCV)

The time has come

to destroy all the Philistines.

It is time to destroy all who are left alive

who could help the cities of Tyre and Sidon.

The Lord will soon destroy the Philistines,

those left alive from the island of Crete.

The people from the city of Gaza will be sad and shave their heads.

The people from the city of Ashkelon will be made silent.

Those left alive from the valley,

how long will you cut yourselves?

“You cry, ‘Sword of the Lord,

how long will you keep fighting?

Return to your holder.

Stop and be still.’

But how can his sword rest

when the Lord has given it a command?

He has ordered it

to attack Ashkelon and the seacoast.”

Jeremiah 47:4–7 — American Standard Version (ASV)

because of the day that cometh to destroy all the Philistines, to cut off from Tyre and Sidon every helper that remaineth: for Jehovah will destroy the Philistines, the remnant of the isle of Caphtor. Baldness is come upon Gaza; Ashkelon is brought to nought, the remnant of their valley: how long wilt thou cut thyself? O thou sword of Jehovah, how long will it be ere thou be quiet? put up thyself into thy scabbard; rest, and be still. How canst thou be quiet, seeing Jehovah hath given thee a charge? Against Ashkelon, and against the sea-shore, there hath he appointed it.

Jeremiah 47:4–7 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

because of the day that cometh to lay waste all the Philistines, to cut off from Tyre and Sidon every helper that remaineth; for Jehovah will lay waste the Philistines, the remnant of the island of Caphtor. Baldness is come upon Gazah; Ashkelon is cut off, the remnant of their valley: how long wilt thou cut thyself? Alas! sword of Jehovah, how long wilt thou not be quiet? Withdraw into thy scabbard, rest, and be still. How shouldest thou be quiet? —For Jehovah hath given it a charge: against Ashkelon, and against the sea shore, there hath he appointed it.

Jeremiah 47:4–7 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

The time has come to destroy all the Philistines,

to cut off from Tyre and Sidon any Philistine

who might have escaped to get help.

The Lord will destroy the Philistines

and anyone who is left from the island of Crete.

Gaza will shave its head in mourning.

Ashkelon will be destroyed.

How long will you cut yourselves, you people left on the plains?

You cry out, “Sword of the Lord

how long will you keep on fighting?

Go back into your scabbard.

Stay there and rest!”

How can the sword of the Lord rest?

The Lord has ordered it to attack Ashkelon and the coast.

He has put it there.

Jeremiah 47:4–7 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

on account of the day that is coming

to destroy all the Philistines,

to cut off from Tyre and Sidon

every remaining ally.

Indeed, the Lord is about to destroy the Philistines,

the remnant of the islands of Caphtor.

Baldness is coming to Gaza.

Ashkelon will become silent,

a remnant of their valley.

How long will you gash yourself?

Oh, sword of the Lord!

How long will you be restless?

Go back to your sheath;

be still; be silent!

How can it rest

when the Lord has given it a command?

He has assigned it

against Ashkelon and the shore of the sea.

Jeremiah 47:4–7 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

to cut off from Tyre and Sidon

every helper that remains.

For the Lord is destroying the Philistines,

the remnant of the coastland of Caphtor.

Baldness has come upon Gaza,

Ashkelon is silenced.

O remnant of their power!

How long will you gash yourselves?

Ah, sword of the Lord!

How long until you are quiet?

Put yourself into your scabbard,

rest and be still!

How can it be quiet,

when the Lord has given it an order?

Against Ashkelon and against the seashore—

there he has appointed it.

Jeremiah 47:4–7 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

Because of the day that is coming

to destroy all the Philistines,

to cut off from Tyre and from Sidon

every survivor who could help,

for Yahweh is destroying the Philistines,

the remnant of the coastland of Caphtor.

Baldness has come upon Gaza,

Ashkelon is destroyed.

O remnant of their valley,

how long will you cut yourself with a blade?

Ah, sword of Yahweh,

how long will you not be quiet?

Gather to your sheath,

keep quiet and stand still.

How can you be quiet

when Yahweh has given an order to it?

Against Ashkelon and against the shore of the sea,

there he has appointed it.”

Jeremiah 47:4–7 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

The day has come

to destroy all of the Philistines.

The time has come to cut off all those

who could help Tyre and Sidon.

I am about to destroy the Philistines.

I will not leave anyone alive

who came from the coasts of Crete.

The people of Gaza will be so sad

they will shave their heads.

And Ashkelon’s people will be silent.

You who remain on the flatlands,

how long will you cut yourselves?

“ ‘Sword of the Lord!’ you cry out.

‘How long will it be until you rest?

Return to the place you came from.

Stop killing us! Be still!’

But how can my sword rest

when I have given it a command?

I have ordered it

to attack Ashkelon and the Philistine coast.”

Jeremiah 47:4–7 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

On account of the day that is coming

To destroy all the Philistines,

To cut off from Tyre and Sidon

Every ally that is left;

For the Lord is going to destroy the Philistines,

The remnant of the coastland of Caphtor.

Baldness has come upon Gaza;

Ashkelon has been ruined.

O remnant of their valley,

How long will you gash yourself?

Ah, sword of the Lord,

How long will you not be quiet?

Withdraw into your sheath;

Be at rest and stay still.

How can it be quiet,

When the Lord has given it an order?

Against Ashkelon and against the seacoast

There He has assigned it.”
