Psalm 79

A Psalm ||of Asaph.

1  O God, athe heathen are come into bthine inheritance;

cThy holy temple have they defiled;

dThey have laid Jerusalem on heaps.

2  eThe dead bodies of thy servants have they given

To be meat unto the fowls of the heaven,

fThe flesh of gthy saints unto the hbeasts of the earth.

3  Their blood have they ished like water

Round about Jerusalem; and there was jnone to bury them.

4  We are become a klreproach to our neighbours,

lA scorn and derision kto them that are round about us.

5  mnHow long, Lord? wilt thou be angry nfor ever?

Shall thy ojealousy ooburn like fire?

6  ipPour out thy wrath upon the heathen that have qnot known thee,

And upon the kingdoms that have rnot called upon thy name.

7  For they have devoured Jacob,

And laid waste his sdwelling place.

8  tO remember not against us ||former iniquities:

Let thy tender mercies speedily uprevent us:

xFor we are brought very low.

9  yHelp us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of thy name:

And deliver us, and zpurge away our sins, afor thy name’s sake.

10  bWherefore should the heathen say, Where is their God?

Let him be known among the heathen in our sight

By the †revenging of the blood of thy servants which is shed.

11  Let cthe sighing of the prisoner come before thee;

According to the greatness of †thy power

†Preserve thou cthose that are appointed to die;

12  And render unto eour neighbours fsevenfold ginto their bosom

hTheir reproach, wherewith they have reproached thee, O Lord.

13  So we hthy people and isheep of thy pasture

Will give thee thanks for ever:

kWe will shew forth thy praise †to all generations.
