Psalm 49

MISPLACED TRUST IN WEALTH

For the choir director. A psalm of the sons of Korah.

Hear this, all you peoples;

listen, all who inhabit the world,h

both low and high,

rich and poor together.i

My mouth speaks wisdom;

my heart’s meditation brings understanding.j

I turn my ear to a proverb;

I explain my riddle with a lyre.k

Why should I fear in times of trouble?

The iniquity of my foes surrounds me.l

They trust in their wealth

and boast of their abundant riches.m

Yet these cannot redeem a personC

or pay his ransom to Godn

since the price of redeeming him is too costly,

one should forever stop tryingD,o

so that he may live forever

and not see the Pit.p

10 For one can see that the wise die;

the foolish and stupid also pass away.q

Then they leave their wealth to others.r

11 Their graves are their permanent homes,E

their dwellings from generation to generation,

though they have named estates after themselves.s

12 But despite his assets,F mankind will not last;

he is like the animals that perish.t

13 This is the way of those who are arrogant,

and of their followers,

who approve of their words.G,u

Selah

14 Like sheep they are headed for Sheol;

Death will shepherd them.

The upright will rule over them in the morning,v

and their form will waste away in Sheol,H

far from their lofty abode.w

15 But God will redeem me

from the power of Sheol,

for he will take me.x

Selah

16 Do not be afraid when a person gets rich,

when the wealth* of his house increases.y

17 For when he dies, he will take nothing at all;

his wealth will not follow him down.z

18 Though he blesses himself during his lifetime—

and you are acclaimed when you do well for yourselfaa

19 he will go to the generation of his ancestors;

they will never see the light.ab

20 Mankind, with his assets

but without understanding,

is like the animals that perish.ac

About Christian Standard Bible

The Christian Standard Bible (CSB) is a highly trustworthy, faithful translation that is proven to be the optimal blend of accuracy and readability. It’s as literal to the original as possible without sacrificing clarity. The CSB is poised to become the translation that pastors rely on and Bible readers turn to again and again to read and to share with others.

The CSB is an original translation: more than 100 scholars from 17 denominations translated directly from the best available Hebrew, Greek and Aramaic source texts into English. Its source texts are the standard used by scholars and seminaries today.

The CSB is trustworthy: the conservative, evangelical scholars of the CSB affirm the authority of Scripture as the inerrant Word of God and seek the highest level of faithfulness to the original and accuracy in their translation. These scholars and LifeWay, the non-profit ministry that stewards the CSB, also champion the Bible against cultural trends that would compromise its truths.

The CSB is clear: it is as literal a translation of the ancient source texts as possible, but, in the many places throughout Scripture where a word-for-word rendering might obscure the meaning for a modern audience, it uses a more dynamic translation. In all cases, the intent is to convey the original meaning of God’s Word as faithfully and as clearly as possible.
