A COLLECTION OF SOLOMON’S PROVERBS

10 Solomon’s proverbs:w

A wise son brings joy to his father,

but a foolish son, heartache to his mother.x

Ill-gotten gains do not profit anyone,

but righteousness rescues from death.y

The Lord will not let the righteous go hungry,z

but he denies the wicked what they crave.aa

Idle hands make one poor,

but diligent hands bring riches.ab

The son who gathers during summer is prudent;

the son who sleeps during harvest is disgraceful.ac

Blessings are on the head of the righteous,

but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence.ad

The remembrance of the righteous is a blessing,

but the name of the wicked will rot.ae

A wise heart accepts commands,af

but foolish lips will be destroyed.

The one who lives with integrity lives securely,ag

but whoever perverts his ways will be found out.ah

10 A sly wink of the eyeai causes grief,

and foolish lips will be destroyed.

11 The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life,a

but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence.b

12 Hatred stirs up conflicts,

but love covers all offenses.c

13 Wisdom is found on the lips of the discerning,

but a rod is for the back of the one who lacks sense.d

14 The wise store up knowledge,

but the mouth of the fool hastens destruction.e

15 The wealth of the rich is his fortified city;f

the poverty of the poor is their destruction.

16 The reward of the righteous is life;

the wages of the wicked is punishment.g

17 The one who follows instruction is on the path to life,

but the one who rejects correction goes astray.h

18 The one who conceals hatred has lying lips,

and whoever spreads slander is a fool.i

19 When there are many words, sin is unavoidable,

but the one who controls his lips is prudent.j

20 The tongue of the righteous is pure silver;

the heart of the wicked is of little value.k

21 The lips of the righteous feed many,

but fools die for lack of sense.l

22 The Lord’s blessing enriches,m

and he adds no painful effort to it.A,n

23 As shameful conduct is pleasure for a fool,o

so wisdom is for a person of understanding.

24 What the wicked dreads will come to him,p

but what the righteous desire will be given to them.q

25 When the whirlwind passes,

the wicked are no more,r

but the righteous are secure forever.s

26 Like vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes,t

so the slacker is to the one who sends him on an errand.

27 The fear of the Lord prolongs life,B,u

but the years of the wicked are cut short.v

28 The hope of the righteous is joy,w

but the expectation of the wicked will perish.x

29 The way of the Lord is a stronghold for the honorable,

but destruction awaits evildoers.y

30 The righteous will never be shaken,

but the wicked will not remain on the earth.z

31 The mouth of the righteous produces wisdom,aa

but a perverse tongue will be cut out.ab

32 The lips of the righteous know what is appropriate,ac

but the mouth of the wicked, only what is perverse.ad

CSB

About Christian Standard Bible

The Christian Standard Bible (CSB) is a highly trustworthy, faithful translation that is proven to be the optimal blend of accuracy and readability. It’s as literal to the original as possible without sacrificing clarity. The CSB is poised to become the translation that pastors rely on and Bible readers turn to again and again to read and to share with others.

The CSB is an original translation: more than 100 scholars from 17 denominations translated directly from the best available Hebrew, Greek and Aramaic source texts into English. Its source texts are the standard used by scholars and seminaries today.

The CSB is trustworthy: the conservative, evangelical scholars of the CSB affirm the authority of Scripture as the inerrant Word of God and seek the highest level of faithfulness to the original and accuracy in their translation. These scholars and LifeWay, the non-profit ministry that stewards the CSB, also champion the Bible against cultural trends that would compromise its truths.

The CSB is clear: it is as literal a translation of the ancient source texts as possible, but, in the many places throughout Scripture where a word-for-word rendering might obscure the meaning for a modern audience, it uses a more dynamic translation. In all cases, the intent is to convey the original meaning of God’s Word as faithfully and as clearly as possible.
