Understood today as the first written gospel, Mark seems to be the most direct and straightforward account of Jesus’ life. In his verse-by-verse commentary, Ralph P. Martin brings out the power of this eminently practical and persuasive Gospel. Martin emphasizes how Mark’s Gospel is a story of action—as encouraging and compelling today as when it was written.

This section serves one purpose, namely to show how Jesus was condemned by the Jewish court and finally rejected as Israel’s Messiah. The proceedings are more like an arraignment than an official trial. The object seems to have been to fasten some accusation of indictable offense on Jesus, which will make it inevitable that he should be transferred to Pilate’s court.
