DESTRUCTION OF THE TEMPLE PREDICTED

13 Asbm he was going out of the temple,bn one of his disciples said to him, “Teacher,bo look! What massive stones! What impressive buildings!”bp

Jesus said to him, “Do you see these great buildings?bq Not one stone will be left upon another—all will be thrown down.”

SIGNS OF THE END OF THE AGE

While he was sitting on the Mount of Olivesbr across from the temple,bs Peter,bt James,bu John,bv and Andrewbw asked him privately, “Tell us, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign when all these things are about to be accomplished?”

Jesus told them, “Watch out that no one deceives you. Many will come in my name,a saying, ‘I am he,’b and they will deceivec many. When you hear of wars and rumors of wars,d don’t be alarmed;e these things must take place,f but it is not yet the end. For nation will rise up against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.g There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines.A These are the beginningh of birth pains.i

PERSECUTIONS PREDICTED

“But you, be on your guard! They will hand you over to local courts,B,j and you will be floggedk in the synagogues.l You will stand before governors and kingsm because of me,n as a witnesso to them.p 10 And it is necessary that the gospelq be preached to all nations. 11 So when they arrest you and hand you over, don’t worry beforehand what you will say, but say whatever is given to you at that time, for it isn’t you speaking, but the Holy Spirit.

12 “Brother will betrayr brother to death,s and a father his child. Children will rise up against parents and have them put to death. 13 You will be hated by everyone because of my name,t but the one who endures to the end will be saved.u

THE GREAT TRIBULATION

14 When you see the abomination of desolationC,v standing where it should not be” (let the reader understand), “then those in Judeaw must flee to the mountains. 15 A man on the housetop must not come down or go in to get anything out of his house,x 16 and a man in the field must not go back to get his coat.y 17 Woez to pregnant women and nursing mothers in those days!

18 “Prayaa itD won’t happen in winter. 19 For those will be days of tribulation,ab the kind that hasn’t been from the beginningac of creationad until now and never will be again. 20 If the Lordae had not cut those days short,af no one would be saved. But he cut those days short for the sake of the elect,ag whom he chose.ah

21 “Then if anyone tells you, ‘See, here is the Messiah!ai See, there!’ do not believe it. 22 For false messiahs and false prophets will arise and will perform signs and wondersaj to lead astray, if possible, the elect. 23 And you must watch! I have told you everything in advance.

THE COMING OF THE SON OF MAN

24 “But in those days, after that tribulation:ak The sun will be darkened, and the moon will not shed its light; 25 the starsal will be falling from the sky, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.am 26 Then they will see the Son of Manan comingao in cloudsap with great poweraq and glory.ar 27 He will send out the angelsas and gather his electat from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven.au

THE PARABLE OF THE FIG TREE

28 “Learnav this lessonaw from the figax tree: As soon as its branch becomes tender and sprouts leaves, you know that summer is near.ay 29 In the same way, when you see these things happening, recognizeE that heF is near—at the door.

30 “Truly I tell you,az this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things take place. 31 Heaven and earthab will pass away,bb but my words will never pass away.bc

NO ONE KNOWS THE DAY OR HOUR

32 “Now concerning that daybd or hour no one knows—neither the angelsbe in heaven nor the Sonbf—but only the Father.bg

33 “Watch! Be alert!G For you don’t know when the timebh is coming.bi

34 “It is likebj a man on a journey, who left his house, gave authority to his servants,bk gave each one his work, and commanded the doorkeeper to be alert. 35 Therefore be alert,bl since you don’t know when the masterbm of the house is coming—whether in the evening or at midnight or at the crowing of the rooster or early in the morning. 36 Otherwise, when he comes suddenly he might find you sleeping.bn 37 And what I say to you, I say to everyone: Be alert!”

About Christian Standard Bible

The Christian Standard Bible (CSB) is a highly trustworthy, faithful translation that is proven to be the optimal blend of accuracy and readability. It’s as literal to the original as possible without sacrificing clarity. The CSB is poised to become the translation that pastors rely on and Bible readers turn to again and again to read and to share with others.

The CSB is an original translation: more than 100 scholars from 17 denominations translated directly from the best available Hebrew, Greek and Aramaic source texts into English. Its source texts are the standard used by scholars and seminaries today.

The CSB is trustworthy: the conservative, evangelical scholars of the CSB affirm the authority of Scripture as the inerrant Word of God and seek the highest level of faithfulness to the original and accuracy in their translation. These scholars and LifeWay, the non-profit ministry that stewards the CSB, also champion the Bible against cultural trends that would compromise its truths.

The CSB is clear: it is as literal a translation of the ancient source texts as possible, but, in the many places throughout Scripture where a word-for-word rendering might obscure the meaning for a modern audience, it uses a more dynamic translation. In all cases, the intent is to convey the original meaning of God’s Word as faithfully and as clearly as possible.
