“Come, follow me” is the call addressed to the four men as they worked at their fishing trade by the Lake of Galilee. The language is familiar to us, but in its first context it is striking. It resonates with Elijah’s summons and challenge to Israel on Mount Carmel: “If Yahweh is God, follow him!” (1 Kings 18:21), and if so, Jesus’ authority is in evidence.
