18. “He that speaketh of himself,” etc. Our Lord having, in the preceding verse, pointed to a criterion for knowing that His doctrine was from God, and the reason why the Jews did not know it; now, assigns another criterion for ascertaining His doctrine to be from God, thus: “He that speaketh from himself,” or delivers doctrine of His own, as opposed to that of God, seeketh his own glory,” wishes to gain a crowd of disciples who would extol him, become his followers, and proclaim him as their chief,
