Shabbethai
Excerpt from the Lexham Bible Dictionary, the most advanced Bible dictionary.
A Levite and one of the men who opposed the plan proposed by the assembly in Ezra 10:12–14 for dealing with foreign marriages during the time of Ezra (Ezra 10:15). Shabbethai was also among the Levites who explained God’s law to the postexilic Jewish community (Neh 8:7). He is mentioned in Neh 11:16 as one of the leaders of the Levites.Four men are mentioned in Ezra 10:15 for their apparent objection to the plan to let the community’s leaders handle the cases of intermarriage over a period of months (Ezra 10:12–14). They likely wanted the matter resolved immediately, not deferred to a later time. However, Ezra agrees to the proposal to let the judges and elders of each town handle the matter, likely due to the unfeasibility of quick resolution. It took the local leaders nearly three months to get through all of the cases (Ezra 10:16–17).
