ANCIENTS. Refers to the wise sages of Israel who were the source and transmitters of traditional wisdom sayings. Used in RSV only in 1 Sam 24:13, but other verses may refer to them in veiled fashion, e.g., Job 12:12 and Isa 3:2. The “elders of Israel” probably also refers to these venerable teachers.
