Onan
Excerpt from the Lexham Bible Dictionary, the most advanced Bible dictionary.
The second son of Judah and second husband of Tamar (Gen 38:4, 8–10; 46:12; Num 26:19; 1 Chr 2:3).The account of Onan is recorded in Gen 38:1–11. Judah’s first son, Er, married Tamar but was struck down by God for his wickedness. Because Er left no heir, Onan married Tamar according to the practice of levirate marriage (Deut 25:5–10); their first son would have been considered Er’s son. However, Onan refused to provide children for Tamar, instead spilling his semen on the ground. Consequently, Onan, like his brother, was struck dead by Yahweh.
